MARIANNE BRANDT (Chemnitz, Germany, 1893 - Kirchberg, Saxony, 1983) for Alessi Shaker Model 90021. Stainless steel. In its original box. Measurements: 18 x 13,8 x 13,8 cm. Coffee maker designed by the famous Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt. In 1923, when she was thirty years old, she enrolled at the Bauhaus in Weimar. She faced some problems that prevented her from entering the Metal workshop from the very first moment, but soon after, the qualities she had to represent everyday objects were demonstrated, so the following year she was allowed to be part of the Metal workshop, thus becoming the first woman to enter the Metal Workshop of the Bauhaus. Marianne Brandt opted for the triangle, cylinder and sphere, as seen in her well-known MT50-55a coffee and tea set of 1924, which was one of her first designs in the metal workshop and one of the last to be produced with luxurious materials such as silver, ebony and glass. Several of his works are in the MoMA in New York.

Metal, lacquer Germany, around 1930 Ruppelwerk GmbH – Metal-working factory form Gotha Circle of Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) – German painter, sculptor, photographer and designer who studied at the Bauhaus and became head of Ruppelwerk’s design department in 1929 Manufactured by Ruppelwerk GmbH, around 1930 Typical metal work of the Bauhaus-period of the Ruppelwerk GmbH Marked with the maker’s mark ‘GMF’ and ‘mehrfach geschützt’ on the underside Diameter: 42.5 cm; height: 1.8 cm Original condition Provenance: Private Collection, Switzerland Unusual Ruppel tray with flower design The present tray is a typical Bauhaus-style-product by the German Ruppelwerk GmbH produced at the time around 1930. The tray is made of metal and has a round shape with a slightly curved rim. It is lacquered in light brown and decorated with scattered flowers and painted fine lines, indicating a craquelure coating. The tray is the largest of five available sizes. The tray is in used condition, but its general impression is aesthetically pleasing. It shows light traces of use such as small color abrasions on the rim and the center. On the verso it is finely scratched. The piece is stamped with the maker’s mark ‘GMF’ and ‘mehrfach geschützt’ on the underside. It measures 42.5 cm in diameter and 1.8 cm in height. Literature: Klaus Weber (Ed.), Die Metallwerkstatt am Bauhaus, Bauhaus-Archiv, Berlin 1992, Cat. No. 160, p. 203. Metallwarenfabrik Ruppelwerk GmbH The metalwork manufacturer Ruppelwerk GmbH located in Gotha, produced Bauhaus designs for a short period. Bauhaus designer Marianne Brandt (1893 – 1983) was responsible for this collaboration. In 1929, the artist and industrial designer was appointed head of the “Entwurfsabteilung Metall- und Massengüter in lackiertem Stahlblech" (Department for drafting metal and mass products with lacquered steel sheet). In addition to designing for production, she was also responsible for the revision of arts-and-crafts objects. Contrary to the strict hierarchies and traditional product lines of the manufactory, Marianne Brandt set new standards. Utility, convenience and reduced forms were consistent with functional Bauhaus design. She reduced the cluttered forms by means of a clever combination of different materials. The combination of glass and matte black lacquer characterized many of the designs Marianne Brandt created for Ruppelwerk. After leaving Ruppelwerk in 1932, many of her designs were either anonymized or changed which makes a clear attribution to her challenging. Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) was a German painter, sculptor and designer. After graduating from Kunsthochschule Weimar she was drawn to Bauhaus in 1924. She studied under László Moholy-Nagy, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In 1926 she became the associate director of the metal workshop. Up to the present time, Marianne Brandt is internationally renowned for her designs of everyday objects such as tea pots, ashtrays, as well as napkin holders and lamps. She is one of the most prominent and renowned Bauhaus artists. After completing her studies, she worked occasionally in the workshop of Walter Gropius. She later became the leading designer of the draft department at Ruppelwerke and modernized their complete product line. In the 1940s and 50s she lectured in applied arts at the Hochschule für Werkkunst in Dresden and at the Kunsthochschule in Weißensee. Her own drafts are produced up to the present day and her early drafts for mass-produced objects are now part of the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in New York. Marianne Brandt and her comprehensive works have left an impressive mark on the development of industrial design of the 20th Century. Hin Bredendieck (1904-1995) Hin Bredendieck (1904-1995) was a German industrial designer. He studied classical arts and design but did not agree with the traditional setting of the art academy, thus, in 1927, he attended the Bauhaus school in Dessau where he met kindred spirits in his teachers Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Beyer. After his graduation, Bredendieck worked in the Berlin-based offices of his teachers and mentors, before he started to work for the Swiss light manufacture B.A.G. He continued to design the lighting at Corso Theatre in Zurich and eventually returned to Berlin to work with furniture designer Herman Gautel. In 1937, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy invited him to join the New Bauhaus in Chicago. Bredendieck started to work as industrial designer in the US. He became the director for the design and head of the Georgia Institute of Technology. KANDEM KANDEM is closely connected with the Bauhaus. This Leipzig lamp manufacturer produced vanguard designs of the Bauhaus. From 1928 to 1933 lamp design was a special interest first with Wagenfeld and Jucker then soon afterward with Marianne Brandt, who was head of the metals workshop. She organized the partnership with Kandem which gave both entities the opportunity to combine advanced technologies and industrial mass production. Painted metal (money box); brass and wood (book ends) Gotha, Germany, around 1929-1932; produced between 1930-1932 Attributed Marianne Brandt (1893-1983) – German painter, sculptor, photographer and designer who studied at the Bauhaus and became head of Ruppelwerk’s design department in 1929 Ruppelwerk GmbH – Metal-working factory form Gotha Presumably designed by Marianne Brandt, between 1929 and 1932 Manufactured by Ruppelwerk GmbH, around 1930-1932 Typical metal money box of the Bauhaus-period of the Ruppelwerk GmbH Book ends in clearly simplified elegant design Overall dimensions (money box): 5.5 x 10 x 5.5 cm (height x width x depth) Overall dimensions (book ends): 16 x 12 x 10 cm (height x width x depth) Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Great Britain In 1929, Marianne Brand joined the Ruppelwerk GmbH in Gotha, where she became head of the design department for metal and bulk goods in painted steel. Under her influence, the firm produced utility objects in the Bauhaus-style for a short period of time The present set of a money box and two matching book ends presents typical Bauhaus-style-objects by the German Ruppelwerk GmbH from the time around 1930 to 1932. Their design is attributed to Marianne Brand, who took over the control of the firm’s metal product range and was in charge of its updating and reviving, between 1929 and 1932. Not every piece that she created is documented, but the present set of items clearly resonates Brand’s modernist, Bauhaus-influenced approach: The money box is made of black painted metal and features a simple handle and two small openings at the short sides. It is inscribed at the one front side, reading ‘Für den Urlaub’ (‘For the holiday’). The box comes with its original key and can be opened from the underside. The book ends are made of a simple wooden panels, whose upper ends are curved, whereas their lower ends are placed vertically onto a flat, rectangular brass plate. The wooden panel and the brass plate are connected via a curved brass handle. The combination of metal works with other materials such as glass and wood was also very typical for the Bauhaus-period of the Ruppelwerk GmbH. The money box as well as the book ends are in a used condition, but their general impression is aesthetically pleasing. The money box shows some fine scattered scratches with tiny losses of paint. It has presumably been revised with some punctual retouchings. The money box comes with its original key and string. The brass pieces of the book ends have a light patina, due to their age. The money box measures 5.5 x 10 x 5.5 cm (height x width x depth) and the book ends measure 16 x 12 x 10 cm (height x width x depth), respectively.
