The project was an immediate success, earning Braun a medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and an album of the photographs was presented to Empress Eugénie. Initially a silk manufacturer in Mulhouse, he devoted himself to photography and became a pioneer of artistic photography. His specialty was studies of flowers and plants, primarily used as templates for the textile and fashion industries, thus bridging the gap between nature and textile photography. Braun captured his subjects with meticulous detail, using large-format albumen prints characterized by fine lines, spatial depth, and a three-dimensional effect. In 1866, he founded the Atelier Adrien Braun in Paris, named after his son, which handled the commercial and technical development of his photographs. In Mulhouse and Paris, Braun supplied silk mills and fashion houses with photographs of nature motifs and ornaments, incorporating his images into the design of prints, fabrics, and decorations. His work is closely linked to the style and visual culture of the Second Empire, which was also shaped in photography by artists such as Édouard-Denis Baldus, Auguste-Rosalie Bisson, and Nadar. Braun received medals for his photographic achievements at international world's fairs, including those in Paris in 1867 and Vienna in 1873, and is considered an important figure in the transition from ornamental photography to the systematic, documentary, and aesthetically oriented flower and nature photography of the late 19th century. This carbon print is considerably larger than the similar albumen print which appeared in Braun's Theatre de la Guerre, 1870-71. Perhaps significantly, its wider viewpoint includes at left the cannons and neatly stacked cannonballs which caused such damage to the roofs in the foreground.
