Maurice Braun Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1877 - d. 1941

(b Hungary 1877; d 1941) Born in Hungary in 1877, Maurice Braun immigrated with his family to New York when he was four years old. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts from 1897-1900, and the following year with William Merritt Chase. After a six-month trip to Europe in 1902, Braun returned to New York where he began his artistic career as a figure and portrait painter. Seven years later, however, Braun had become more interested in landscape painting. This interest, as well as his commitment to Theosophy, a discipline that aimed to balance all religions with the natural and spiritual world, inspired the artist to move to San Diego. Southern California’s dramatic mountains, vast ocean and brilliant colors epitomized a kind of natural paradise for Braun and he captured the landscape and atmospheric light in an impressionistic style. Maurice Braun Painting - Lush Trees

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Maurice Braun (American, 1877-1941). Oil on board, early 20th century. Signed at lower right. A delightful landscape painting by California plein-air painter Maurice Braun, rendered in his signature Impressionist style. The scene presents an idyllic summer's day with a leafy deciduous tree of thick meandering branches in the foreground followed by verdant shrubberies and lush foliage in the background, all beneath a pale blue sky. The light pink and yellow of the sandy ground contrasts its blossoming surroundings, diametrically opposing the sky, while bright hues of tangerine, lemon, and crimson and deep tones of navy and violet underscore the areas of light and shadow throughout the piece. All is delineated with loose, Impressionist brushstrokes and a keen eye for the effects of light and color. A marvelous painting by Maurice Braun, an American Impressionist best known for his southern Californian landscapes. Size: 10" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm) About the artist: "An established California plein-air painter in the Impressionist style, Maurice Braun painted landscapes reflecting moods of nature and his skill of showing the varying effects of light put San Diego into the national art scene. Then in 1910, attracted to the California landscape as a subject for his painting, he moved to San Diego and from his studio on Point Loma painted the French Impressionist influenced landscapes for which he became known. He was initially drawn to California because of an active Theosophical Society of which he had been a member since college and which espoused the merging of truths common to all religions. A special part of that religion was light as metaphor, a technique that he perfected in his painting. In 1912, he founded the San Diego Academy of Art and was its director for many years, although he returned to the East in 1921 and established studios in New York City, Silvermine, and Old Lyme, Connecticut. Several years later he returned to San Diego but from 1924 to 1929, continued to spend part of each year in the East.In 1929, he became one of the founders of the Contemporary Artists of San Diego, and he was also active in art circles in San Francisco and Los Angeles and exhibited with the California Art Club. Prof. Maurice Braun, Sommerlandschaft

      Est: -

**First Time At Auction** Maurice Braun (American, 1877-1941). Oil on board, early 20th century. Signed at lower left. A breathtaking landscape painting by California plein-air painter Maurice Braun, rendered in his signature Impressionist style and mounted in a lavishly gilded period frame. The scene presents verdant foliage in the foreground followed by golden hills below a moody sky replete with billowing clouds in the otherwise azure-hued atmosphere. All is delineated with loose, Impressionist brushstrokes and a keen eye for the effects of light and color. A marvelous painting by Maurice Braun, an American Impressionist best known for his southern Californian landscapes. Gilding was measured via x-ray fluorescence and contains between 28.2 - 38.2% gold. Size: 14" L x 10" W (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm) Size: 21.375" L x 17.375" W (54.3 cm x 44.1 cm) About the artist: "An established California plein-air painter in the Impressionist style, Maurice Braun painted landscapes reflecting moods of nature and his skill of showing the varying effects of light put San Diego into the national art scene. Prof. Maurice Braun, Sommerlandschaft

      Est: -

Prof. Maurice Braun, Summer Landscape View of mountainous summer landscape with flowering broom under a gossamer cloudy sky in bright sunlight, probably motif from the barren landscape of the San Diego Mountains or the Santa Cruz Mountains, retrospectively written by his children "... Braun loved nature. His aesthetic orientation in San Diego was twofold: First, he wanted to learn about the San Diego landscape and understand how to represent it in form and colour, and then play with it. ... With this understanding of the landscape, Braun then felt free to realise his efforts to compose a painting, to create relationships of space and colour, to balance the composition, and finally to convey the fundamental essence of natural structures. By studying these elements of the landscape, Braun was able to capture the qualities that conveyed its essential beauty. ..." and John F. Kienitz adds "... He was an artist of deep philosophical conviction, for whom all expressions of life were divine. So it is natural that you should find pastoral peace in the appearance of his work. This peace arises from his sense of wholeness. Through an interplay of religious respect and aesthetic determination, he found a balance, and this was for him, as it can be for us, the secret of life itself. Maurice Braun, in his own yet unmistakable way, succeeded in creating spatial and colour relationships out of comparable far-sightedness, which are not unrelated to Cezanne's magnificent formal clarity. ...", atmospheric, slightly impasto impressionistic landscape painting, oil on plywood, c. 1940, indistinctly signed "Maurice Braun" lower right, slight need of cleaning, framed, folding dimensions approx. 32 x 40 cm.
