Maurice Braun Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1877 - d. 1941

(b Hungary 1877; d 1941) Born in Hungary in 1877, Maurice Braun immigrated with his family to New York when he was four years old. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts from 1897-1900, and the following year with William Merritt Chase. After a six-month trip to Europe in 1902, Braun returned to New York where he began his artistic career as a figure and portrait painter. Seven years later, however, Braun had become more interested in landscape painting. This interest, as well as his commitment to Theosophy, a discipline that aimed to balance all religions with the natural and spiritual world, inspired the artist to move to San Diego. Southern California’s dramatic mountains, vast ocean and brilliant colors epitomized a kind of natural paradise for Braun and he captured the landscape and atmospheric light in an impressionistic style. A beautiful chromolithograph by American artist Maurice Braun titled "Hills of California," rendered in his signature Impressionist style and mounted in a lovely, wooden period frame. Maurice Braun Painting - Lush Trees

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Maurice Braun (American, 1877-1941). Oil on board, early 20th century. Signed at lower right. A delightful landscape painting by California plein-air painter Maurice Braun, rendered in his signature Impressionist style. The scene presents an idyllic summer's day with a leafy deciduous tree of thick meandering branches in the foreground followed by verdant shrubberies and lush foliage in the background, all beneath a pale blue sky. The light pink and yellow of the sandy ground contrasts its blossoming surroundings, diametrically opposing the sky, while bright hues of tangerine, lemon, and crimson and deep tones of navy and violet underscore the areas of light and shadow throughout the piece. All is delineated with loose, Impressionist brushstrokes and a keen eye for the effects of light and color. A marvelous painting by Maurice Braun, an American Impressionist best known for his southern Californian landscapes. Size: 10" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm) About the artist: "An established California plein-air painter in the Impressionist style, Maurice Braun painted landscapes reflecting moods of nature and his skill of showing the varying effects of light put San Diego into the national art scene. He was born in Nagy Bittse, Hungary, and immigrated to New York City in 1881 when he was four years old. He showed early art talent and interest and as a youngster, copying works of art at the Metropolitan Museum. From 1897 to 1902, he studied at the Academy of Design and then for one year with William Merritt Chase at the Chase School, which became the New York School. In 1902, he went to Europe, painting in Austria, Germany, and Hungary.
