A self-taught photographer, Manuel Álvarez Bravo began taking pictures as a teenager before studying painting at the Academia San Carlos and learning darkroom techniques from Hugo Brehme. Encouraged by Tina Modotti, he became connected with Mexico’s avant-garde, including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and exhibited alongside Edward Weston, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Walker Evans. For many years, Connie Todd was the personal assistant to prominent Austin-based book publisher, photographer, and author Bill Wittliff (William Dale Wittliff, American, active in Austin, Texas, 1940-2019). Bill Wittliff wrote celebrated screenplays such as "Lonesome Dove" (1982), "Legends of the Fall" (1994), and "Barbarosa" (2000), and founded the regionally-oriented publishing company, Encino Press, with his wife Sally in 1963. Connie Todd later served as the founding director of the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University from 1997-2010, transforming it into an internationally-acclaimed collection through noteworthy acquisitions such as the Cormac McCarthy archive. There are a couple spots of very faint soiling from handling in the far margins, and each margin shows a short, linear pencil line (likely related to prior matting). These do not at all affect the image area. Please note that the image is printed slightly crooked on the sheet. With Bravo's signature and México, in pencil, on recto, in the lower right margin.
