George Hendrik Breitner Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Water colorist, Photographer, b. 1857 - d. 1923

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.

George Hendrik Breitner was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. From 1876 to 1880 he attended the Art Academy in The Hague where his extraordinary talent was rewarded on various occasions. From October 1878 till April 1879 he worked as an art teacher at the Leiden academy Ars Aemula Naturae. In 1880 he was expelled from the Art Academy of The Hague for misconduct, because he had destroyed the regulations-board. In the same year he lived at landscapist Willem Maris's place at Loosduinen and was accepted as a member of Pulchri Studio, an important artist's society in The Hague. Later, he distanced himself from the Hague School and today he is generally regarded as an Amsterdam Impressionist.

During 1880–1881 he worked at the famous Panorama Mesdag together with Hendrik Mesdag, S. Mesdag-van Houten, Theophile de Bock and Barend Blommers. In 1882 he met and worked together with Vincent van Gogh, with whom he often went sketching in the poorer areas of The Hague. Breitner preferred working-class models: labourers, servant girls and people from the lower class districts. Interest in the lot of the common people, which many artists felt in that period, was nurtured by the social conscience of French writers such as Émile Zola.

He was associated with the Dutch literary group known as the Tachtigers (English translation: "Eighty-ers"). This was a group that championed impressionism and naturalism against romanticism, influencing other painters such as Isaac Israëls, Willem Witsen, and poets like Willem Kloos.
Meisje in de witte kimono (1894), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

In 1886, he entered the Rijksakademie of Amsterdam, but soon it became clear that Breitner was far beyond the level of education offered there.
The Dam, Amsterdam (c.1895), watercolor, 40 x 51 cm, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Breitner saw himself as "le peintre du peuple", the people's painter. He was the painter of city views par excellence: wooden foundation piles by the harbour, demolition work and construction sites in the old centre, horse trams on the Dam, or canals in the rain. With his nervous brush strokes, he captured the dynamic street life. By 1890, cameras were affordable, and Breitner had a much better instrument to satisfy his ambitions. He became very interested in capturing movement and illumination in the city, and became a master in doing this. It is not impossible that Breitner's preference for cloudy weather conditions and a greyish and brownish palette resulted from certain limitations of the photographic material.

Breitner also painted female nudes, but just like Rembrandt he was criticized because his nudes were painted too realistically and did not resemble the common ideal of beauty. In his own time Breitner's paintings were admired by artists and art lovers, but often despised by the Dutch art critics for their raw and realistic nature.

By the turn of the century Breitner was a famous painter in the Netherlands, as demonstrated by a highly successful retrospective exhibition at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam (1901). Breitner travelled frequently in the last decades of his life, visiting Paris, London, and Berlin, among other cities, and continued to take photographs. In 1909 he went to the United States as a member of the jury for the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh.

Although Breitner exhibited abroad early on, his fame never crossed the borders of the Netherlands. At the time foreign interest was more for anecdotal and picturesque works; the typical "Dutchness" of the Hague School. As time went by critics lost interest in Breitner. The younger generation regarded impressionism as too superficial. They aspired to a more elevated and spiritual form of art, but Breitner did not allow himself to be influenced by these new artistic trends. Around 1905–1910 pointillism as practised by Jan Sluyters, Piet Mondrian and Leo Gestel was flourishing. Between 1911 and 1914 all the latest art movements arrived in the Netherlands one after another including cubism, futurism and expressionism. Breitner's role as contemporary historical painter was finished.

Breitner had only two pupils, Kees Maks (1876–1967) and Marie Henrie Mackenzie (1878–1961).

He died on 5 June 1923 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

From an early age, George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923) was fascinated by military subjects. His early sketchbooks are filled with vivid scenes of soldiers and their horses, many inspired by contemporary conflicts such as the Austro-Prussian and the Franco-German wars. Often drawing from illustrated reports in newspapers and magazines of these events, Breitner developed a keen eye for the energy and dynamism of cavalry scenes. His skill in capturing these scenes even earned him a place among the artists recruited by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (181-1915) to work on the ‘Panorama van Scheveningen’, where Breitner was specifically tasked with painting the cavalry. Breitner’s engagement in military themes, however, was not driven by nationalism or a desire to glorify war. On the contrary, his depiction often focused on soldiers in quiet moments of rest and reflection, far removed from the chaos of battle. The current painting is a striking example of such a scene. A group of Yellow Riders – members of the Dutch Horse Artillery Regiment, nicknamed for their ochre-yellow uniforms – stand beside their horses in a wooded clearing. The low-hanging sky, bent trees and alert posture of the horses evoke a subtle tension, as though action is imminent. Both horses and Yellow Riders occupy a central place in Breitner’s work. Far from being mere props, the horses are rendered with power and presence. In this current painting, the horses appear tense and uneasy – their ears pinned back, their bodies ready to move. Breitner captures their energy and mass with bold, painterly brush strokes, focusing on atmosphere. His approach was intuitive and dynamic, opposed to the polished academic style. He approached the riders with the same painterly freedom. Although he was not particularly interested in the uniforms for their symbolic value; he did see them as opportunities to explore contrasts of light and shadow, composition and movement. Some of Breitner’s cavalry scenes – especially those in which the riders charge directly at the viewer – were seen as confronting or intense. In contrast, the riders in this composition are waiting, either after exertion of just before, offering a moment of pause. With this painting, Breitner demonstrates not only his mastery of light and movement, but also his ability to capture the quiet strength of the moment. Through brushstroke and mood, Breitner transforms a fleeting scene into a moment of introspection and presence.

(1431613) (1) (18)

Waspit Signed with initials lower right Black chalk on paper, 47.3 x 34.1 cm (measured within mount) Provenance: - François Buffa & Fils, Amsterdam - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: The term "waspit" was used to describe women, particularly laundresses, who performed tough, manual labour. George Hendrik Breitner often portrayed such women in his drawings, capturing their strength and resilience. Two well-known examples of this are his drawing of Wasvrouw (a laundress) and his drawing titled Waspit on the Lauriergracht, both housed in the Rijksmuseum. In these works, Breitner emphasises the physicality of the women, highlighting their strong arms and the demanding nature of their work. The drawing by Breitner shows a woman with the same tough and determined posture and also with the same working-class style dress. These women by Breitner all embody the resilience and dignity of the working class, a theme central to Breitner’s art. * Condition report available upon request

Bies, Eindhoven, 1980, Executed in 1883. Breitner could be regarded as the last great master of Dutch nineteenth century art. He was educated in the traditional way by enrolling into the renowned Academy in The Hague in 1876 where he could carefully nurture his talent, yet his flammable temper got him expelled in 1880. This fact is rather exemplary for Breitner as an artist. He has the right knowledge and skills to become a traditional artist, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, yet he also possesses a rare and raw talent that makes him stubborn and unpredictable. It is this spark of genius and, almost consequently, the persistent belief in his own art that makes him one of the pioneers of a new art group later called ‘Tachtigers’.Just as his colleague and rival Isaac Israels (1865-1934), Breitner depicted many military subjects in the early 1880s. He originally wanted to become a history painter, focussing on large compositions with many figures. In 1882 he could finally let go of this traditional desire and worked more and more towards a new goal, becoming ‘le peintre du peuple’. In this context one has to refer to the influence of literature on Breitner, more specifically ‘Manette Salomon’ by the brother De Goncourt. Gradually his focus would pivot to the life of the working class in the city. Breitner’s brief contact with Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in The Hague, with whom he discovered the working-class neighbourhoods of The Hague, strengthened this shift towards the modern and proletariat. The present watercolour, executed in 1883, is a beautiful example of this exciting time when a young Breitner starts to discover his artistic talent and paves the way to a new approach of art. The artillery on the bridge is still very much connected to his older military scenes and his traditional roots, but Breitner placed the horses in such an unusual way that the composition appears to be modern. Especially the brown horse in the centre, depicted almost in profile, breaks up the conventional rhythm. The contrast between the hazy, almost unfinished, background and the detailed horses, drawn with sharp rigorous lines, also indicate the exciting shift in Breitner’s artistic development. The two ordinary city kids on the pavement walk into the composition as if the artist wants to introduce a new subject. They are drawn with an uncanny flamboyance, sketching three-dimensional characters with just a couple striking lines. We can keep on praising Breitner’s masterly watercolour technique, but it might be better to hear from a contemporary like art critic Grada Hermina Marius (1854-1919): ‘… men behoefde hem maar op een teekenavond in Pulchri (…) eens een aquarelletje te zien aanzetten, het bloc tusschen de enkels, kleur druipend in de rake waarden der aangezette tonen, - en in die van kleur doorvoede natheid het wit van een schort, het blauw van een soldatenpak te zien ontstaan – om in volle bewondering het ‘wie doet het hem na’ uit te roepen, de bewondering voor den kleurvirtuoos, om wien men geschaard stond’ (Bionda 1991).

    George Hendrik Breitner, Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

George Hendrik Breitner, Dutch 1857-1923 - Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam; oil on canvas, signed lower left 'G.H. Breitner', 35.4 x 45.5 cm (unframed) Note: Breitner was an important Dutch Impressionist painter, engraver and photographer, depicting the streets and life of Amsterdam. He considered himself a people's painter, often capturing the same scene in different weather conditions. In 1882, he met Vincent Van Gogh through his brother Theo, and the two would sketch the working class district of the Hague together. He also painted with Isaac Israels, which was explored in a recent exhibition at the Kunstmuseum den Haag, 'Breitner vs Israels'. His works are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, including sketches and a photograph of the Nieuwmarkt, as well as the British Museum.
