[SMUGLIEWICZ, Franciszek (1745-1807) - BRENNA, Vincenzo (1745- 1820)]. Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture. Rome : Lodovico Mirro, 1776-1778. Edition originale de cette magnifque suite de gravures des thermes de Titus. En 1774, l'éditeur Ludovico Mirro avait obtenu l'autorisation de procéder à des fouilles sur l'Esquilin, pour dégager le site des thermes construits en 81 par l'empereur romain Titus. Après avoir fnancé les fouilles, il avait également commissionné une équipe d'artistes pour dessiner les vestiges, dans l'objectif d'une publication. Parmi eux se trouvait le peintre polonais Franciszek Smugliewicz, qui avait remporté le premier prix de l'Académie de San Luca. Leurs dessins ont été admirablement gravés par Marco Carloni, et publiés à partir de 1776. Millard, 130 ; Cicognara, 3796("grandissimo volume"). Grand in-folio oblong (591 x 685 mm). 1 dédicace à double page, 1 pages de titre et 59 planches à double-page, toutes gravées par Marco Carloni d'après Smugliewicz et Brenna, dont 8 dépliantes (quelques rousseurs et pliures, notamment sur les premières planches). Reliure de l'époque en demi-veau à coins, tranches rouges (reliure frottée, charnière supérieure abîmée).

Die vorliegenden numerierten Blätter (Nr. 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 18, 26, 37, 40, 42, 44, 45, 55, 56) stammen aus dem 1776 in Rom veröffentlichten Band "Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture". Die insgesamt 61 Drucke dieser Publikation, herausgegeben von Ludovici Mirri, bieten eine visuelle Tour durch die Thermalräume der Domus Aurea. Das Buch reproduziert methodisch und mit außerordentlicher Präzision das aufwendig dekorative Programm der eleganten Fresken der kaiserlichen Wohnung Neros. Illustriert wurden die Druckgrafiken mit exzellenter Detailtreue und großer Sorgfältigkeit von Vincenzo Brenna und Franciszek Smugliewcz, die beide einen ausgezeichneten Ruf als Freskenmaler genossen. Gestochen wurden die Zeichnungen durch die Hand von Marco Carlone.- Ganz ausgezeichnete Drucke mit breitem bzw. vollem Schöpfrand. Geglättete unauffällige Mittelfalte, teils etwas bestoßen im äußeren Rand, einzelne Faltspuren, vereinzelt größere Wasserflecken im weißen Rand, teils Einrisse im weißen Rand, Nr. 26 und 44 mit angesetzten Partien im Rand und professionellen farbigen Retuschen, Nr. 10 mit größeren fachmännisch restauriertem Einriß, weitere Erhaltungsmängel überwiegend im äußeren Rand, sonst sämtlich schöne, in den Farben herrlich frisch und leuchtend erhaltene Exemplare.

Engraved double-page preface, engraved double-page title and 59 numbered double-page plates by Marco Carloni after Smugliewicz and Brenna, mounted on guards, 7 plates with folding extensions. (First plate lightly spotted, several plates detached from mounts, 3 folding plates strengthened along fold line on verso.) Uncut in 19th-century half vellum and mottled boards (lower joints slightly splitting, lower corners bumped). A FINE COPY WITH DECKLE EDGES. The Polish-born painter, Franciszek Smugliewicz, worked in Rome between 1763 and 1785, winning first prize at the academy of San Luca. One of his most important commissions was to portray the recently re-excavated site under the Esquiline hill, known as the baths of Titus. Although Raphael had copied the emblematical paintings and stucco work for the logge of the Vatican, the rooms themselves had subsequently been covered over again. As the preface addressed to the 'amatori delle belle arti e della antichit…' makes clear, posterity was indebted to Ludovico Mirri who financed new excavations in 1774, commissioned the designs of Smugliewicz and Brenna, and published this magnificent set of plates by Marco Carloni (1742-1796). Berlin Kat. 3950; Cicognara 3796 ('grandissimo volume').
