La réapparition de Fleur d’hiver sur le marché de l’art constitue un évènement majeur permettant de remettre en lumière une artiste rare, singulière et si talentueuse. Louise Breslau, nait en Allemagne mais passe toute son enfance à Zurich. À dix-neuf ans, voulant étudier la peinture, c’est tout naturellement qu’elle s’installe à Paris, alors le laboratoire de toutes les modernités picturales en cours, véritable aimant à jeunes artistes en devenir. En tant que femme, elle ne peut accéder à l’École des Beaux-Arts et intègre alors l’Académie Julian, prestigieuse école privée qui dispose du tout premier atelier réservé aux femmes. Travailleuse et ambitieuse, elle passe aux yeux de ses camarades pour l'élève la plus prometteuse et la plus talentueuse de l'atelier. Dès 1879, elle présente un Portrait de Groupe au Salon, qui lui vaut une mention honorable du jury et lui offre une nouvelle participation au Salon de 1881. Fait assez rare pour une femme « célibataire » de son temps – Louise Breslau est en réalité en couple avec l’artiste Madeleine Zillhardt depuis 1885 – notre peintre arrive à vivre de son art. Sa consécration est définitivement entérinée en 1901, après que l’Etat français, qui vient de lui acheter plusieurs de ses œuvres, lui remet la légion d’honneur. Louise Breslau devient alors la première artiste étrangère à recevoir cette prestigieuse distinction. Notre tableau constitue sans conteste l’une des œuvres majeures de la carrière de notre peintre. Présenté au Salon des Beaux-Arts de 1892, en même temps que son autre chef-d’œuvre au pastel le Portrait de Mademoiselle Adeline Poznanska enfant actuellement conservé au Musée d’Orsay (inv. RF 35843, fig. 1), il se distingue des simples portraits pour lesquels Louise Breslau est alors réputée. Il témoigne de cet incomparable aptitude à rendre sur la toile toute la sensibilité de la scène représentée et à traduire avec brio la profondeur psychologique de ses modèles. Ajoutons à cela une rare habileté pour capter la lumière et l’accoucher sur la toile, et nous obtenons Fleur d’hiver, chef-d’œuvre absolu du peintre, condensé de son art et de son talent. Le musée d’Orsay conserve un dessin préparatoire à notre tableau, provenant d’un album anciennement dans la collection Hector Brame (inv. RF 30272, Folio 18 Recto, fig. 2). Malgré la notoriété acquise de son vivant, ainsi qu’une exposition rétrospective à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts après sa mort en 1928 où notre tableau avait une place d’honneur, Louise Breslau sombre quelque peu dans l’oubli durant les deux derniers tiers du XXe siècle. L’exposition qui lui est consacrée au Musée des Beaux-arts de Lausanne en 2001 a permis de remettre en lumière sa vie et son œuvre. Ainsi, depuis une petite vingtaine d’année, Louise Breslau est régulièrement citée et exposée à travers l’Europe, son Portrait de Madeleine Cartwright vient par ailleurs de rejoindre les collections du musée du Petit Palais à Paris. Nous ne doutons pas que l’évènement que constitue la réapparition de notre tableau contribuera aussi à redonner à Louise Breslau toutes ses lettres de noblesses, qu’elle mérite indéniablement. The portrait reveals the young artist Madeleine Zillhardt, who accompanied Marie-Louise as a colleague, confidante and muse, since 1890. The portrait is characteristically made in pastel and demonstrates Breslau's confident approach to capture her friend comfortably sitting in dreamy attitude and holding a cup of tea. Her delicate, portrait-like features especially impress and give an insight into the great artistic skills of the artist. The painting is signed with monogram lower left 'J.C.B.'. The paper is laid down on cardboard and appears slightly browned. The dimensions of the depiction are 42.5 x 30 cm and the size of the frame is 63 x 43 cm. Marie-Louise Breslau (1856-1927) Marie-Louise Breslau was born in Munich and spent her early childhood in Zurich, where her father had accepted a position as a chief physician at the university. After his death in 1966, she was sent to a convent close to the Lake Constance area. Her teacher Eduard Pfyffer discovered her artistic talent, whereupon she aspired to study at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris in 1876. Her works were first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1879, where she was consequently included until 1891. Following her great artistic achievements, she was close friends with Parisian artists such as Edgar Degas and Henri Fantin-Latour. In 1890 she became a permanent resident in Switzerland, where she regularly exhibited at National Art Exhibition until 1929. Specialized in pastel painting, Marie-Louise Breslau was mainly focused on portraiture. The artist Madeleine Zillhardt supported her activities to a large extent and often served her as a sitter. Purser bought it in 1926. Its purchase not only aided her lifelong friend who was experiencing precarious times, but the picture was loaded with nostalgia for both of them because Hélène was the granddaughter of their 1878-79 flat-mate Maria Feller, a talented but unfortunate musician. The picture is in Breslau's brisk final manner, an open technique giving full value to the warm grey Ingres paper on which she liked to work, and every element is deftly and economically rendered-the banner and its fringe are suggested with the merest touches> Dr. John O'Grady Dublin February 2009

In November 1978 Purser enrolled at the Académie and was impressed by the talented Breslau, who had already gained a reputation as a talented artist among her peers. Breslau and Purser shared an apartment together for the duration of their studies and remained life-long friends, corresponding regularly long after Purser returned to Ireland. In 1879, with a portrait Tout passé, Breslau was the only student from the Académie Julian women's atelier to debut at the Paris Salon. Shortly afterwards Breslau opened her own atelier and became a regular contributor and medal winner at the annual Salon, Paris. Due to her success at the Salon and favourable notice from the critics, she received numerous commissions from wealthy Parisians and became well-regarded among her contemporaries, such as Edgar Degas and Anatole France. Breslau went on to become the third woman ever to be presented with France's Legion of Honour award>
