Bibliografia di riferimento: K. Jan Brueghel the Younger, Panoramic Landscape with the Flight into Egypt

    Est: €60,000 - €80,000

The composition of the present landscape with the Flight into Egypt follows the artist's near-far landscapes created at the beginning of the 17th century. Jan Brueghel depicts the Holy Family in a wide landscape with other travellers on a mountain path lined with mighty trees. The biblical events are only revealed to the viewer at a second glance. The picture, painted on a copper panel, is probably a replica of a painting of the same subject in the Hermitage, St Petersburg, dated 1610 (see K. Ertz: Jan Brueghel the Elder, Die Gemälde, vol. II, Lingen 2008-10, no. 235, pp. 518f.). Comparable to another replica in private ownership (K. Ertz, opus cit., no. 235a, pp. 519f.), it matches the St Petersburg landscape down to the smallest detail. This very finely executed work is not listed in Klaus Ertz's catalogue raisonné. It had been in a Dutch private collection for over 80 years.

  • Jan Brueghel the Younger Frans Francken the Younger, Bouquet of flowers in a carved vase
    May. 21, 2026

Jan Brueghel the Younger Frans Francken the Younger, Bouquet of flowers in a carved vase

    Est: €90,000 - €120,000

Certificate Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 10.6.2003. Jan Brueghel the Younger was born in Antwerp in 1601. He initially served an apprenticeship with his father before travelling to Italy in 1622. It was only upon learning of his father’s death that he returned to the Scheldt in 1625. In this monumental floral arrangement, the son follows the composition and variety of flowers found in his father’s most important floral painting – the one that all Brueghel bouquets, and not just those of his son Jan the Younger, are modelled on – namely his masterpiece in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Frans Francken, also born in Antwerp and of an age between the two painters, collaborated with both Jan Brueghel the Elder and his son Jan Brueghel the Younger. In the case of the latter’s works, there are several comparable compositions in particular where Frans Francken was responsible for the design of the sculpted vases. This is the case, for example, with a slightly smaller painting in Detroit (The Detroit Institute of Arts, Inv. No. 35.105). In a bouquet by Jan Brueghel the Younger at the Villa del Poggio Imperiale near Florence (Inv. No. 165), too, the design of the vase is by Frans Francken. Klaus Ertz observes in this composition “a broader, distinctly more painterly brushwork that not only traces the finest structures of a flower, but gives preference to the surface, the boldly juxtaposed colour accents, and the tapestry-like effect over the three-dimensionality of the floral form”. He interprets this as indicating a certain temporal distance from his father’s work and dates our painting accordingly to the early 1630s. The era of Mannerist works of art for the cabinets of curiosities, the so called „Wunderkammern“ of ecclesiastical and secular princes had come to an end by around 1620, but there remained a demand for ‘Mannerist’ compositions from the wealthy bourgeoisie, within whose context this work should be understood.

(1601 Antwerpen - 1678 ebenda bzw. 75,4 cm x 61 cm. Rahmen. Beigefügt: Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 30. Oktober 2015. Oil on copper panel. • Jan Brueghel (Breughel) der Jüngere
    Apr. 25, 2026

    Jan Brueghel (Breughel) der Jüngere

    Est: €45,000 - €90,000

ATTRIBUTED TO JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1601 – 1678) AND JAN VAN BALEN (ANTWERP 1611 – 1654). Minerva and the Muses on Mount Helicon: An Allegory of the Arts

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

This monumental and visually complex canvas is a remarkable example of the collaborative tradition that defined the Antwerp school in the 17th century. The work is attributed to Jan Brueghel the Younger, who provided the vast, atmospheric landscape, and Jan van Balen, responsible for the elegantly rendered figures. The scene depicts the goddess Minerva (Athena), identified by her plumed helmet, shield, and spear, as she visits the nine Muses on Mount Helicon. The Muses are shown engaged in a celestial concert, playing a variety of period instruments including a lute, a viol, a harp, and a portable organ (organetto). The panoramic landscape is quintessential of Brueghel’s "paradise" style, featuring a deep blue-green valley, winding rivers, and distant mountains under a soft, hazy sky. The transition from the dark, wooded foreground to the luminous distant background creates an extraordinary sense of depth. Van Balen’s figures, characterized by their graceful poses and classically inspired drapery in vibrant reds and yellows, harmonize perfectly with the natural setting. Oil on canvas, 118 x 180 cm.

J. und FRANS FRANCKEN d. J. (1601 Antwerpen 1678) (1581 Antwerpen 1642) Blumengirlande mit Madonna und Kind, der Heiligen Anna und Johannes dem Täufer. Öl auf Holz. Unten rechts innerhalb der Kartusche signiert: ffranck. 54,7 × 41,6 cm. Howard Walsh, Forth Worth, Texas. - Sammlung Walsh Family Art Trust.

    Jan Brueghel d. J. (1601 – 1678) und Victor Wolfvoet (1612 – 1652)

    Est: €50,000 - €70,000

NOLI ME TANGERE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 142 x 185 cm. In ebonisiertem Holzrahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 07.03.2022, in Kopie. Brueghel d. (1472161) (13) Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601 – 1678) and Victor Wolfvoet (1612 –1652) NOLI ME TANGERE Oil on canvas. Relined. 142 x 185 cm. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 7 March 2022, in copy. The extremely large-format depiction with lush vegetation and fruit is typical of Jan Brueghel the Younger. As was common in Antwerp at that time, the best artists collaborated to create outstanding works of art together, and Victor Wolfvoet was responsible for the figures in this painting. A comparable painting of the same subject by Brueghel is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy (inv. no. 87.8.1).

HENDRICK VAN BALEN - Diana and the Nymphs with Actaeon in the background

    Est: -

HENDRICK VAN BALEN Antwerp c. 1573 - 1630 ATTRIBUTED TO JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER Antwerp c. 1601 - 1678 Diana and the Nymphs with Actaeon in the Background Oil on panel Dimensions 53.5 x 93.5 cm The reverse bears the Antwerp city hall mark of quality, as well as the mark "MV," which corresponds to the personal signature of the panel maker, Michiel Vriendt, one of Antwerp's most prestigious panel suppliers during the first half of the 17th century and a favorite of Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Younger, among others. Provenance: - Drury Lowe Collection, Locko Park, United Kingdom. - Sotheby's London, December 6, 1995, lot 156 (Old Master Paintings from the Drury Lowe Collection at Locko Park). - Private collection, Madrid. The composition depicts the mythological episode of Diana and Actaeon narrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses. In a forest clearing, the goddess Diana appears accompanied by her retinue of nymphs at the moment of bathing, while in the background the figure of the hunter Actaeon can be distinguished, whose intrusion into the sacred space will trigger his transformation into a stag and his subsequent death at the hands of his own dogs. The theme was addressed on several occasions in the Antwerp art scene at the beginning of the 17th century, especially in the context of collaborations between specialists in figure and landscape painting. Among the most celebrated are those by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrick van Balen, who developed a compositional formula in which Van Balen handled the mythological figures—with elegant anatomies and soft modeling—while Brueghel executed the landscapes, vegetation, and animals with his characteristic meticulousness. The present work faithfully reproduces a model established by these artists, the original of which is kept in the Gatchina Palace, near Saint Petersburg. According to art historian Fred G. Meijer, a specialist in Flemish painting, the painting should be considered a copy based on that composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrick van Balen. The specialist also indicates that it could be a work produced within the Brueghel workshop or circle—possibly with the participation of Jan Brueghel the Younger—although it is also possible that it is the work of a skilled copyist active in Antwerp who had access to the original model. In any case, the quality of the support—a panel marked with the seal of the city of Antwerp and the mark of the panelist Michiel Vriendt—confirms its production within the Flemish context of the 17th century, where the repetition and dissemination of successful compositions was a common workshop practice. It should be noted that the art historian Klaus Ertz, in his monograph dedicated to Jan Brueghel the Younger (1984), documents variants related to this composition, including a version of the landscape without the figures (cat. no. 323), which confirms the widespread circulation of this model within Brueghel's workshop and his artistic circle.

JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER (Antwerp, 1601 – 1678), attributed - Basket of Flowers with Birds

    Est: €70,000 - €80,000

Oil on parquet panel. Dimensions: 49 x 64 cm. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. The composition is set on a light stone slab against a dark background, where a large wicker basket with visible handles rests on three small spherical supports. The basket overflows with a rich and colorful floral arrangement composed of roses, tulips, ranunculus, carnations, lilies, jasmine, and other seasonal flowers, arranged in a seemingly disordered yet carefully constructed manner. Branches laden with berries intertwine among the petals, one of them bearing bright red cherries that have fallen from the basket, introducing a subtle sense of movement into the scene. As a life-giving element, the painter includes two small birds: one perched on the edge of the basket pecking at the berries, and the other in the lower left corner, attentive, almost vigilant. The presence of these birds adds an anecdotal and bucolic touch, reinforcing the naturalistic character of the composition. The vibrant colors of the flowers stand out sharply against the plain black background, which acts as a neutral backdrop, enhancing the brightness and freshness of the petals. The horizontal format complements the width of the basket and contributes to the overall visual balance. Beyond its obvious decorative function, this type of floral still life shares in the symbolism of the Nordic tradition, where the ephemeral beauty of the flowers alludes to the fleeting nature of life. The combination of species from different seasons, the almost idealized perfection of the flowers, and the meticulous detail reflect the refined taste of a cultured society that found in these works both aesthetic pleasure and moral reflection. Jan Brueghel the Younger, son of Jan Brueghel the Elder and a member of one of the great Flemish painting dynasties, developed his career in Antwerp, following the style inherited from his family workshop. He worked closely with leading artists of his time and was dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1630. His floral compositions, of which several similar versions are known, continue the tradition begun by his father, characterized by meticulous detail, rich color, and careful arrangement of elements. This lot is in an international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will apply and are the responsibility of the buyer.

DIE FÜNF SINNE Öl auf Holzplatte. Parkettiert. 66,5 x 106,5 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Freren, 22. April 1987, in Kopie. Teils rest. Literatur: Vgl. Klaus Ertz, Jan Brueghel d. J. At the beginning of the 20th century, the painting was part of the Rudolf Peltzer Collection in Cologne, at that time still together with its pendant, a similarly designed cartouche depicting Saint George in the center. It is not known when the paintings were separated. These paintings are particularly beautiful floral cartouches by Jan Breughel the Younger. They were already separated in the 1980s. Klaus Ertz dates the works to around 1650 and was unable to identify the figure painter at the time.

BRUEGHEL, JAN THE YOUNGER Antwerp 1601 - 1678 Title: Paradise Landscape with the Animals Entering Noah's Ark. Date: Ca. 1660-1665. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 70 x 170cm. Frame: Framed. Verso: On the panel, hallmark of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke with hands and tower. Certificate: Klaus Ertz, Lingen 20th January 2022. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; according to consignors acquired by the family at Lempertz auction 1896/98. Cf. literature: Klaus Ertz, Jan Brueghel d.J., Die Gemälde mit kritischem Ouvrekatalog, Freren 1984; Klaus Ertz, Christa Nitze-Ertz, Jan Brueghel d.Ä., Die Gemälde mit kritischem Ouvrekatalog, Volume I-IV, Lingen 2008-10. Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 - 1625) conceived this wonderful scenery. The son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder was one of the most famous artists in the Spanish Netherlands around 1700, admired and praised especially for his exquisite depictions of flora and fauna. The diversity of God's creation, which the princes of his time collected in chambers of art and curiosities, he presented in brilliant paintings. With the procession of the animals to Noah's Ark, still lying on dry land in the background of the painting, he found an Old Testament theme with which he could vary his popular depictions of the Garden of Eden. His paintings were in great demand at all the courts of Europe. A painting by the artist later also called "Paradise Brueghel" was a "must-have" for every collector. When Jan Brueghel the Elder died suddenly of cholera in 1625, his eldest son, Jan the Younger, was 24 years old and was in Italy for further training, having probably already worked in his father's workshop for more than a decade. Suddenly, "the junior" was given responsibility for a headstrong family and for a flourishing workshop in Antwerp. Back in his homeland, he proved equal to these challenges. Jan the Younger was quickly accepted as a member of the St. Luke's Guild, of which he was to become dean in the early 1630s. In addition to works he created himself and the collaboration with other painters that was so common at the time (Hendrik van Balen, Peter Paul Rubens or Joos de Momper the Younger, among others), the paintings left unfinished by his father as well as the demand for paintings in his father's style formed a foundation for his economic success. Today we know of four paintings by the father that focus on the entry of the animals into the ark. Three of them, dated by the leading Brueghel scholar Klaus Ertz between 1613 and 1615, are very close to our painting in composition. Jan Brueghel the Younger reproduced this design at least four times. Klaus Ertz lists three of the works in the catalogue raisonné of Jan Brueghel the Younger and dates them to the 1630s. Klaus Ertz was able to examine this painting in the original. He came to the conclusion that it is the latest in the genesis of this "family of pictures" and was probably created in the 1650s. In one respect, our painting differs from the works discussed so far: The picture panel has a more transverse-rectangular format. Perhaps this change was made at the request of the commissioner, as Klaus Ertz assumes in his expert opinion. This change in format, with the composition remaining unchanged, reinforces the tendency that can be observed in the comparison of the works by father and son: The pictorial elements are more loosely grouped by Jan Brueghel the Younger than by his father, they take up more of their own space and thus also acquire a somewhat greater lightness. In this particular case, this impression is also reinforced by the very light, partly glazed style of painting. The entire Habsburg family, not least the emperors Maximilian II and Rudolf II in Prague, were intensely interested in animals and maintained prestigious menageries as early as the early 16th century. As an official court painter, Jan Brueghel the Elder had access to the Brussels menageries, where the governors of the Netherlands collected living specimens of the exotic animals of the Habsburg domain. Here the painter could study them intensively and make sketches. The most diverse animals of all continents are to be marvelled at in this broad panorama. They linger on the picture-parallel stage of the foreground, then move diagonally from the right edge of the picture to the centre back. Noah himself and two women, loaded with provisions, wait in the middle ground for the animals and a boy who drives the camels, also loaded with luggage. In the background lies the ark as a saving refuge. There is no real order yet; mostly two individuals of one species can be seen, but some have not yet found their partner or are standing away from him in the turmoil. The right edge of the picture overlaps a single elephant, but outside the frame more animals will follow, certainly also its partner. Only the grey stallion in the centre - clearly Spanish - is alone. He has a special role in the painting. Like a representative of Spanish rule, he seems to be directing the procession of his "subjects" from all over the world. The lion is not the king here, his interest is exclusively in his partner. The group of lions and the group of leopards, as well as this striking grey stallion, are motifs that Jan Brueghel the Elder adopted from his close friend and congenial partner in many joint paintings, Peter Paul Rubens. The adoption of these motifs is by no means due to a lack of creativity of his own. Rather, it is a reverence to the great colleague and friend and offered the knowledgeable viewer the pleasure of recognition. This painting can also be understood in this way, as a son's reverence for his father, as a last reproduction of a composition that continues to enchant viewers to this day. Est: €120,000 - €150,000

JAN BRUEGHEL II (Antwerp, Belgium, 1601 - 1678) "Holy Family and St. John". Oil on oak panel. Without cradled. It presents an excellent state of conservation. Measurements: 42 x 59 cm; 64,5 x 82,5 cm (frame). This work attributed to Jan Brueghel II stands as an example of the technical refinement and narrative delicacy that characterize the production of the Flemish master. Executed in oil on oak panel, the work unfolds an intimate yet expansive scene. The Virgin, seated at the foot of a large tree, holds the Child in a gesture of tenderness, while St. Joseph watches serenely and little St. John approaches reverently. Around them, a group of cherubs animates the scene, gathering flowers and playing in the foreground, reinforcing the atmosphere of paradisiacal harmony. The landscape is one of the great protagonists of the composition. Brueghel's mastery is evident in the meticulous representation of the vegetation, which frames the sacred scene and opens towards a distant horizon where a Flemish village and a river populated by swans can be seen. The carefully modulated light guides the eye through the different layers of depth, creating an effect of continuity and serenity. Particular attention should be paid to the treatment of the animals, whose meticulous naturalistic observation and orderly arrangement directly evoke the work "The Earthly Paradise" by Jan Brueghel the Younger, now in the Prado Museum. Dogs, birds, lambs and other domestic and wild animals participate in this idyllic vision, in which the natural world appears reconciled with the divine order. The quality of this painting lies as much in the precision of its details as in its ability to integrate the human figure, nature and theological symbolism in a balanced and coherent composition. Jan Brueghel II, heir to the artistic lineage of his family, achieves here a work of great subtlety, which combines the rigor of the Flemish tradition with a poetic sensibility that invites silent contemplation. Jan Pieter Brueghel, son of Jan Brueghel, was in fact an artist who specialized in flower painting, and collaborated with several figure painters of the time. He must have trained in the family workshop, and in 1645 he joined the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp as a master. Cornelis Schut was a painter, draughtsman and engraver, belonging to the generation before Brueghel. In fact, he joined the Antwerp guild in 1618, and his youthful work shows the influence of Abraham Janssens, who must have been his teacher. He then traveled to Italy, where he stayed for four years between 1624 and 1628. In Rome he worked for what would become his protector from then on, the collector Vincenzo Giustiniani, and in 1628 he worked in Florence as a designer of tapestry cartoons at the Fabbrica Medicea. During his Italian stay Schut was influenced by Guercino and Pietro da Cortona, as well as by the Baroque classicism of Reni and Domenichino. Back in Antwerp he collaborated with Rubens in works such as the ephemeral decorations for the reception of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria in 1635. On the other hand, his work was widely disseminated through engravings, some of which were made and published by himself. He is currently represented in major art galleries such as the Prado Museum, the Louvre or the Fine Arts Museums of Caen and Rennes.

VISION DES HEILIGEN HUBERTUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 66,5 x 93 cm. Links unten mit Restsignatur „I. BRV..“. In ebonisiertem Profilrahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Jaco Rutgers, Rutgers Kunsthistorisch Advies, Tilburg, 20. Dezember 2024, in Kopie. JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNG (Brussels 1601-1678). "Garland with the Virgin". Oil on canvas. Attached certificate by Klaus Ertz. Measurements: 52'5 x 39 cm; 68'5 x 55 cm (frame). The combination of the genre of the still life and the Marian subject knew in the Flemish painting a peculiar development. The garlands of flowers and fruits surrounding religious scenes became popular in Flanders as a reaction to the Protestant Reformation that denied the cult of images, that is, the representation of Virgins and Saints. Here we see an elaborate garland where the sensual flowers and juicy fruits seem to acquire relief, given the luminous quality, the tight velvety shades, as well as the skillful drawing. The Immaculate Virgin, on the crescent moon, surrounded by birds of paradise, remains in the background, given the splendor of the garland, although she also receives great attention in the enveloping draperies of tunic and mantle, as well as in the golden lights that appear behind the fluffy clouds. This painting by Jan Brueghel the Younger can be related to those made by his father Jan Brueghel de Velours (Brueghel the Elder): see The Virgin and Child surrounded by flowers and fruit, 1617-1620 (Museo del Prado), in which Brueghel painted the garland and Rubens the figures. This work belonged to the Marquis of Leganés, patron of great Flemish artists. Jan Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter who specialized in still life and flower painting, although he also worked in landscape, mythological, allegorical and biblical scenes. He was an independent artist of great talent. The eldest son of Jan Brueghel de Velours, and grandson of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, he probably trained in his father's workshop, and it was also his father who encouraged him to travel to Milan in 1622, to enter the service of Cardinal Federico Borromeo. From Milan he traveled to Malta and Sicily and in 1625, after receiving the news of his father's death, he returned to Antwerp to take charge of his workshop. That same year he is registered as a master in the Guild of Painters of St. Luke. During these years he sold the paintings left by his father, and successfully completed those he had left unfinished. He also produced a number of small format paintings following his father's style, repeating his father's still lifes, flower garlands, landscapes and allegories. However, he did not do so as a mere copyist, but incorporated novelties and gave his work a personal accent. Among his most prominent patrons were the French court, which commissioned a "Cycle of Adam" (1630-31), and the Austrian court, for which he worked in 1651, after which he returned to Antwerp in 1657, where he lived until his death. He is currently represented only in a few private collections and in prominent institutions (in the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Metropolitan in New York, the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna and other museums around the world).

Jan Brueghel II, the Younger (Antwerp 1601 - 1678) workshop of Virgin and Child (Nursing Madonna) within a Garland of Flowers Oil on panel 29 x 25 cm Confirming the attribution, there are several paintings by Jan Brueghel the Younger where the flowers in the garland are arranged in a very similar manner, demonstrating the existence of a basic design for his paintings and his workshop. One such comparative example can be found in the painting by Jan Brueghel II and Hendrick van Balen, Flower Garland with Madonna and Child, sold at the Dorotheum in Vienna on the 25th of April 2017.

Jahrhunderts in Antwerpen". Öl/Kupfertafel. 69 cm x 87 cm. Rahmen. Beigefügt: Expertise von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 10.01.2013 (Fotokopie). Vgl. (1601 Antwerpen - 1678 ebenda bzw. 1601 Mechelen - 1652 Antwerpen) Die Hl. A.R. (1431584) (11) Jan Brueghel the Younger, 1601 Antwerp – 1678 ibid., attributed THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTHONY Oil on oak panel. 34 x 45.4 cm. Related versions of the same subject by Jan Brueghel the Younger are held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (no. 667; copper, 20.9 x 29) and the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie Dresden (catalogue 1930, no. 878; copper, 25.5 x 35, dated 1604). Brueghel also uses the effect of a firestorm in his depictions of the underworld to create drama (Aeneas in the Underworld, 1630). Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 – 1625) had already cited the fires of hell in 1594 in his eponymous work, The Temptation of Saint Anthony.

VISION DES HEILIGEN HUBERTUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 66,5 x 93 cm. Links unten mit Restsignatur „I. BRV..“. In ebonisiertem Profilrahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Jaco Rutgers, Tilburg, 20. Dezember 2024.
