Nahum Mitchell's 'History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater [Massachusetts] in Plymouth County', published by Edward Alden, Bridgewater, Massachusetts in 1897, states that Samuel Pratt Newhall, brother of William, who came from Charlestown, Massachusetts, married Lydia Singer of Salem, Massachusetts, on March 26, 1814. They had one child, Rebecca Turner, b. August 5, 1816. Condition: Excellent with stable craquelure. Each oil on canvas, signed in pencil on Amos Gale's stretcher "John Brewster Pinxt, March the 28th 1822," (30.125 x 25.25 inches); housed in the original frames. Frame: H: 35 in., W: 30 in., D: 3.25 in. Provenance: The Dingman Collection, Hampton, New Hampshire. Sarah Bartlett (1773-1847) was the youngest daughter of Josiah Bartlett, first Governor of New Hampshire and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She married Amos Gale, Jr. (1768-1824) in 1796. Amos was the first physician to be admitted to the newly formed New Hampshire Medical Society at its inaugural meeting in 1791.

      portrait of the artist’s sister, Betsy Avery Brewster (1798-1838) her sister, Sohpia, was sold by CRN Auctions, 10/24/21 31 by 22.25 in.; framed 34 by 25 in. On reverse a facsimile of script signature from upper left corner J. Brewster lummer Collection of G.W. Samaha On loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2001 for their exhibit “ American Folk”. A letter from the MFA and their wall label for the painting is included. Brewster, a deaf itinerant painter, interrupted his career from 1817 to 1820 to learn sign language at the first and newly opened school for the deaf, the Connecticut Asylum in Hartford, Connecticut, now known as the American School for the Deaf. Brewster, at age 51, was the oldest in a class of seven, the average age being 19. This was the first class at the school which witnessed the birth of American sign language. (cloth reline) ; period gilt frame 32 by 20.5 in., From the home of a major, long-time collector of Americana in the Boston area., This painting remained in the Brewster family until 1986 when Ohio dealer G.W. Samaha purchased it and a portrait of her sister Betsey. This, and the portrait of sister Betsey have been shown in every John Brewster exhibition since the 1960's, the last being in the traveling exhibition 2005-07 at Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, PA, and the American Folk Art Museum in NYC.       JOHN BREWSTER, JR. (CT/ME, 1766-1854) - Portrait of Rev. Dr. Paul Coffin, Pastor of Buxton, Maine; oil on canvas, unsigned, in black molded frame with gold liner. OS: 33" x 28", SS: 29" x 24". Cleaned, restored and relined, with a repaired long Y-shaped tear from upper left down his jaw inside the ear, across his mouth and up into upper right background, with a branch down into his shoulder on left. Rev. Coffin (1738-1821), was the Pastor of Buxton for 57 years. Originally from Newbury, Mass., he graduated from Harvard in 1759, married Mary Gorham, daughter of famed ship's master Capt. Nathaniel Gorham of Charlestown, Mass. in 1763, was ordained in Buxton, York County, District of Maine in 1763 as Preacher of the Congregationalist Church (then called Church of Christ). He and Mary had 14 children. They are buried at Tory Hill Cemetery in Lower Buxton Corners. Brewster, son of a doctor, was born in Hampton, Conn. in 1766, and was a deaf-mute. He moved with his brother Royal to Maine in 1795, as an itinerant painter he charged $15 a portrait. He bought 80 acres in Buxton in 1833, had stopped painting in 1817 to learn sign language. He died in 1854, is buried in the same cemetery as Dr. Coffin.
