Untitled, a rocky shore coastal view with fishing shacks and a stilted dock, oil on canvas, signed 'A.T. Bricher' (lower left), 17x36in., overall with frame 30x50in., Opening Bid $7000 Condition: The work is in a very good state of preservation following finely executed professional treatment (New York City c.2011). The paint film is secure, displaying an overall stable and well-adhered surface, housed in a well-restored ornate period giltwood frame, lined. The painting fluoresces an even, healthy, and mildly aged varnish layer. The UV light reveals some inpainted areas including a 2.25x1.75in. area to the bottom right hillside, a small .75x.5in. area at mid center sky, and a few minor scattered spots to the right and left bottom corners. A prominent, localized network of dark fluorescence is visible strictly following along the lines of the natural craquelure within the coastal hillside and its water reflection. In our opinion, this pattern is consistent with a professional stabilization technique, likely micro-inpainting, to ensure structural and visible stability (see images). The frame exhibits a minor chip to the upper right back corner. Provenance: Private collection, New Jersey (acquired c.1966); thence by descent within the family to the new owner.

Provenance: From the estate of Jim and Anna White, Indianapolis, IN Biography from Pierce Galleries: Bricher was born on April 10, 1837, in New Dorp, New York and was mostly self-taught. He spent his childhood in Newburyport, MA, although he took art lessons at Lowell Institute in Boston from 1851-1858. He became a professional painter in 1858 and was a member of the American Water Color Society, the Boston Art Club, and an Associate of the National Academy in 1879. He moved permanently to NYC in 1868 and then settled in Staten Island. He painted in Shinnecock, Narragansett, Chatham, Cape Cod, Southampton and along the MA and ME coastlines. He exhibited at the National Academy from 1868-1890 and at the Boston Athenaeum and Brooklyn Art Association from 1870-1886. He is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, the Terra Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Indianapolis Museum of Art and elsewhere. Bricher was a significant second-generation Hudson River School landscapist and marine painter who is considered to be the last of the relevant American luminists. He is best known for his marine paintings depicting New England shorelines, in which crashing waves show the dynamic forces of nature. With ease and finesse he captured the natural ambiance around the ocean and its coasts and the artist's reverence for the presence of what is before him is apparent. Keeping in step with the philosophical beliefs of his era, the artist was concerned with equating to canvas the resplendence of nature and the morality of his convictions. A.T. Bricher is highly sought-after and in great demand because each of his canvases and watercolors show resplendently and with confident brushwork how nature looked during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Alfred Thompson Bricher (American 1837-1908) Maine Seascape watercolor on paper 10 x 21" 20 x 30" as framed. Bricher made pictures for L. Prang and Company's print catalogue; like many New England artists of this period, he sought to bring his work before a wider public. In 1868 he married and moved his studio to New York, but over the next decades spent a great deal of time traveling, primarily sketching seascapes up and down the Atlantic coast. Most of his summer trips were to the New England states. On these trips he made landscape studies that were later transformed into oils and luminous watercolors. He was particularly impressed with Grand Manan Island off the Maine coast in the Bay of Fundy, whose rugged cliffs and surrounding sea he drew and painted for seventeen years.

AMERICAN OIL PAINTING BY ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHER

Alfred Thompson Bricher, American, 1837 to 1908, an antique oil on board painting depicting a seascape with sailing ships. Housed in a richly ornate gilt wood frame with a metal name plate below. Note: Alfred Thompson Bricher was an American painter associated with White Mountain art and the Hudson River School. Bricher was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was educated in an academy at Newburyport, Massachusetts. He also studied with Albert Bierstadt, William Morris Hunt, and others. He attained noteworthy skill in making landscape studies from nature, and after 1858 devoted himself to the art as a profession. He opened a studio in Boston and met with some success there. In 1868 he moved to New York City, and at the National Academy of Design that year he exhibited Mill Stream at Newburyport. One of a kind artwork. Signed lower right and dated 1864. Depicting a couple and two children watching the moon rise over a lake with two children watching from the lawn of a grand home. Bricher was part of the Hudson River School movement but later became associated with luminism due to his focus on light effects and tranquil scenes. This is a rare work and one of a small number of nocturnes known to have been painted by the artist. Dimensions: 1 PC x H 20" W 41" Frame Size: H 24" W 46.50"
