    Mar. 10, 2026

    Henry Bright,  1810-1873-  A mountainous landscape with a w

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Henry Bright,  1810-1873-  A mountainous landscape with a waterfall;  oil on canvas, 76.7 x 63.9 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 16 December 1987, lot 33.  Note:  Bright studied under Alfred Stannard (1806-1889), and is believed to have been the pupil of John Berney Crome (1794-1842) and John Sell Cotman (1782-1842). He was a key member of the Norwich School of painters, and was close friends with David Cox (1783-1859), Samuel Prout (1783-1852), and James Duffield Harding (1798-1863). The present work is a particularly striking example of Bright's highly evocative landscapes, with his distinctive depiction of the rock faces which gleam in the sunlight resembling several of his oils in the collection of the Glasgow Museums [no.353; no.427].
