LANDSCHAFT MIT FELSENQUELLE, BURGBERG UND FIGURENSTAFFAGE Öl auf Leinwand. 60 x 75,5 cm. Mittig unten auf Stein Reste einer Signatur. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Luuk Pijl, Dokkum, 29. Mai 2025, in Kopie. A.R. (1482132) (11) Paul Bril, ca. 1553/54 Antwerp – 1626 Rome LANDSCAPE WITH A ROCK SPRING, CASTLE HILL AND FIGURAL STAFFAGE Oil on canvas. 60 x 75.5 cm. Remnants of a signature at lower centre on the stone. Accompanied by an expert's report by Dr Luuk Pijl, Dokkum, 29 May 2025, in copy. The painting corresponds closely in style to comparable landscapes by the artist. Characteristic of this style is the juxtaposition of dark tree sections against a distant horizon, as seen, for example, in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (Landschaft bei Tivoli, ca. 1595/1600, inv. no. 2143) and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (Hügelige Landschaft, ca. 1618, inv. no. 1084). Notes: On the reverse is an old, printed label with the artist's name, the title Felsige Landschaft mit Herdenstaffage, a description of the composition, and the inscription “Illustration Plate 14”. The label also includes handwritten annotations, including “Flehr Collection” and “16 October 1930”. Also present is a typewritten label inscribed “Haus der Rheinischen Heimat Köln / Leihgabe Sammlung Esch”, with the handwritten no. 40. Further collection or catalogue numbers are also present.

    Est: CHF40,000 - CHF50,000

Küstenlandschaft mit Hafen, altem Turm, Schiffen und Figurenstaffage. Um 1610-1615 Unten links monogrammiert: PB Expertise: Dr. Luuk Pijl, Dokkum, 17. Februar 2026. (1471951) (1) (11)

Gemäldepaar HÜGELLANDSCHAFT MIT REITERN UND STÄDTCHEN IM TAL sowie BAUMLANDSCHAFT IN GEWITTERSTIMMUNG Öl auf Leinwand. Jeweils 55 x 65,5 cm. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, Rom, 27. Mai 2002, in Kopie. Paul Bril Giuseppe Cesari, called Il Cavalier D'Arpino, Landscape with a Hermit

    Est: €25,000 - €30,000

The motif of a saint meditating in a landscape is a subject Bril often painted. The structure of the composition recalls Flemish models, whereas the ruins in the background were often employed by the artist to show his awareness of ancient Roman monuments; the figure of the hermit has been attributed to the Cavalier d’Arpino, a successful figure painter who worked with Bril on other occasions, as in the case of Cardinal Federico Borromeo’s commission (Landscape with the hermit Muzio, now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. See F. Cappelletti, op cit., p. 233, cat. no. 41). The present painting is datable to the early seventeenth century and can be compared to other landscapes by Bril executed during this period, such as the works in the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, and in the Palazzo Mattei di Giove, Rome.

Paul BRIL (Anvers, vers 1553 - Rome, 1626) 14.5 x 18.5 cm The present pair of beautifully preserved gouaches show two episodes from the Life of Christ. Until today it has remained unnoticed that the present gouaches started their life as part of a larger group. A gouache, showing The Temptation of Christ, in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, also dated 1613 was once part of the series1, as were the two miniatures in the famous Miniaturen-Kabinett of the Munich Residenz museum2. All five works depict an episode in the life of Christ, all are of identical dimensions and the horizon line is at the same level. Bril worked on the series for an extended period of time. The two works in Munich are dated 1612 and 1615, while the one in Enschede is from the same year, 1613, as the Flight from our pair.    The works show Bril´s masterful handling of gouache. There can be no doubt that, while still working in Flanders, he became familiar with this particular technique by carefully studying the delicate gouaches made by Hans Bol (1534 – 1593).        We would like to thank Drs. Luuk Pijl for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work and for writing this entry.  The painting is sold with its certificate of authenticity.   1.     See : Albert Blankert, Dutch 17th Century Italianate Landscape painters, Soest 1978, no. 2, ill. 2. 2.     See: Rudolf Oldenburg and Hans Buchheit, Das Miniaturen-Kabinett der Münchener Residenz, München 1921, nos 25 and 26, ill.

Paul Bril, Les pèlerins d’Emmaüs, huile sur cuivre, 1602, 47,8 x 58 cm, Glasgow Art Gallery, n° 10 Paul BRIL (Breda, vers 1553 - Rome, 1626) 26 x 34 cm The most influential landscape painter of his time, Paul Bril was born in Breda in 1553 or 1554. He trained in Antwerp with the unknown Damiaen Ortelmans and, at only 14 years old, supported himself by painting landscapes on harpsichords. He travelled to Rome in 1576, where he joined his elder brother Matthijs, who was involved in large scale fresco painting. After Matthijs’ premature death in 1583, Paul succeeded him on several Papal commissions in the Vatican and in various churches and villas in and around Rome. He played a crucial role, not only artistically but also socially in the Eternal City. He was principe of the Accademia di San Luca and a member of the society called Virtuosi al Pantheon. Furthermore, Bril introduced Jan Brueghel the Elder to the important patron Cardinal Federico Borromeo, he was best man at the marriage of the influential German painter Adam Elsheimer, and he housed Bartolomeus Breenbergh for many years. The master died in 1626 leaving an impressive oeuvre of wall decorations, etchings, drawings and paintings. His work paved the way for Claude Lorrain who would become the most important landscape painter in seventeenth century Europe.    Bril’s work is firmly rooted in the Flemish landscape tradition of Patinier, Herry met den Bles and Pieter Bruegel. Furthermore, the early work by Hans Bol should be mentioned as an significant source for Bril’s work. The prints made by Cornelis Cort after designs by                                                                                                                                               Girolamo Muziano were another significant source of inspiration. The tree types, and also the relation of the small figures to the extensive landscape derive from Muziano. Typical of Bril’s paintings on copper are the strong local colors and the great attention to minute detail. The almost tangible rays of light, a feature often encountered in Bril’s early work, has been replaced later on by a more quiet and more crystal clear atmosphere.         The present, colorful and well preserved, painting on copper shows Christ on the road to Emmaus. The subject of Christ on the road to Emmaus fascinated Paul Bril for many years. A related work, also on copper , is in the Glasgow Art Gallery (fig. 1). The Glasgow rendition is also dated 1602 so we might assume that that picture and the present one were painted by Paul Bril simultaneously as there is no significant difference in terms of painterly quality.     We would like to thank Drs. Luuk Pijl for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work and for writing this entry. The painting is sold with its certificate of authenticity.    1.          Paul Bril, The Pilgrims to Emmaus, oil on copper, 1602, 47.8 x 58 cm, Glasgow Art Museum, no. 10

    Est: €1,600 - €2,200

Landscape with St Francis kneeling and praying before a crucifix. A painter-engraver etching made by the famous Flemish painter Paul Bril. Lettered in lower left: "Paulo Bril inuen. et fec." and at right "Ioan. Orlando forma".This is a print is made by Paul Bril himself and not by other artists like the Sadeler who engraved his landscapes. Etchings made by Paul Bril himself are extremely rare. He made only between 11 and 16 prints and most of them are only known by title. This is an early state with the address of Joan Orlando as the publisher (active from 1590 on). There might have been a first state before this address as is the case on some of his other prints. Hollstein describes the figure as an unspecified hermit. The wound on the foot of the monk suggests St Francis with stigmata.

Cecilia in Trastevere wirken konnte. (1421452) (11) Paul Bril, ca. 1553/54 Antwerp – 1626 Rome, attributed   LANDSCAPE WITH BAY, SHIPS, TOWERS AND SCENERY   Oil on copper. 27 x 35 cm.   As is the case in all of Bril’s paintings, the viewer is introduced to a world in which exciting landscapes are combined with narrative elements. This painting style is also present in his other works, such as his Rocky River Landscape with Hermit (Koller, 2923), Forum Romanum (1600 Gemäldegalerie Dresden) or The Tower of Babel (Alte Pinakothek Munich).

Attribuito a Paul Bril (Anversa 1554-Roma 1626) - Landscape with ruins of Campo Vaccino

    Est: €5,000 - €8,000

oil on canvas cm 93 x 126 The painting offered in the lot can be compared to some known and autographed examples by Paul Bril of a similar subject but of different formats and supports: in particular with the Market in Campo Vaccino , in Dresden, Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister, and with the Landscape with ruins of Campo Vaccino and the rainbow , formerly Rome, private collection (see F. Cappelletti, Paul Bril e la pittura di paesaggio a Roma , Rome 2006, p. 104, p. 243 cat. 54, p. 245 cat. 57). Paul Bril, between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, can be considered the inventor of a genre that had great fortune for centuries, that is the painting of classical ruins in which small scenes of daily life are set. These works were purchased by collectors, especially Nordic ones, as a memento of the Eternal City, even if in a fairy-tale and whimsical adaptation, in which the monuments of the Forum were recomposed with precision but also with a touch of fantasy in the juxtapositions and framing.

    Est: €1,000 - €1,200

Umkreis. Pittoreske felsige Landschaft mit Hirten. Radierung. 21,7 x 30,9 cm. Unbeschrieben. Wz. L.W. Ruby, Paul Bril: The Drawings, 1999, Abb. 20 und 46). - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
