John Bunyan Bristol (American 1826-1909) Interior with Windsor Chair oil on canvas signed lower right 14 x 11" 18 x 15" as framed. Although a predominantly self-trained artist, Bristol became known for his landscape paintings of the mountains and lakes of the Connecticut River Valley, as well as the hazy rivers of Florida. Bristol’s style followed that of the Hudson River School painters often described as Luminists; his attention to detail and exquisite use of color depicted lighting in a way that was similar to his contemporaries such as Asher B. Durand and John F. Kensett. Bristol exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design in 1858 and was also granted a medal in the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, Paris Exposition of 1889 and Pan-American Exposition of 1901. His works are now displayed in the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, the Hudson River Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

John Bristol (1826-1909) American, Riverside Landscape Oil on Canvas. Beautiful view of a town along the water, with people walking along the shoreline. Signed bottom right. Ornate gilded frame. Condition: Damage to frame. Painting in excellent condition. Overall Size: 18 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. Sight Size: 9 1/2 x 15 in. Frame Thickness: 3 in. John Bunyan Bristol was born in Hillsdale, New York in 1826. Self-taught, Bristol studied from nature and originally painted figure and portrait paintings. He abandoned these genres in order to devote his skillful hand to landscape painting. In the late 1840s Bristol studied briefly with the painter Henry Ary, staying at his home in Massachusetts and creating highly detailed images which typically combined water and land views. He traveled to Florida in 1859 and produced several tropical pictures which had an impact on his style for the rest of his life. In the 1880s he began to exhibit oil paintings of the northern Adirondacks around Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid. He was a longtime member of the National Academy of Design and the Century Association. He was honored with medals at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition and at the 1900 Paris Exposition. He died on August 31st, 1909, in the Home for the Incurables in New York City, after having been taken there a year before following a stroke. His works are now highly sought by collectors all over the world for their incredibly delicate use of light, color, shadow, and form, with many in museums along the United States East Coast.

(29.5 x 49.8cm) Provenance Wiederseim Associates, Phoenixville, sale of November 24, 2012, lot 475. Acquired directly from the above sale. Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. The relined canvas is in good overall condition. Craquelure is present throughout but stable. A 1" spot of inpainting is present at top center, along with thin lines and flecks at top left. Scattered flecks of inpainting are present across the sky. Remnants of a milky green varnish are present throughout the foreground, inhibiting thorough reading under UV light. See Specialist's photos for details. Frame: 16 3/4 x 24 1/2 x 1 3/4 in.

CONTACT US SKU#: 119709 US Shipping $120 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Hillsdale, near Hudson, New York, John Bristol was primarily a self-taught artist. He did study briefly with the landscapist Henry Ary, who moved to the Hudson area in the early 1840s. Painters in Hudson were noted as landscape specialists, and Ary, who was known for his picturesque views of the town and nearby Mount Merino, was the instructor in painting and drawing at the Hudson Female Academy, and had some influence on artists in the area.John Bristol exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1858 to 1900, was elected an associate academician in 1860, and a member in 1875. Although Bristol lived in New York City, he traveled and painted throughout New England almost every summer. He was a member of the Century Association from 1873 to 1909.Bristol exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 where he was awarded a medal, at the Paris Exposition of 1889, where he won a prize, and at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901 where he also received a medal. His work is preserved at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
