GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST R.A. (BRITISH 1890-1978) TWO PORTRAITS OF A GIRL AND BOY - 1957

              Est: £400 - £600

GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST TWO PORTRAITS OF A GIRL AND BOY - 1957 Each signed and dated lower right, pastel on grey paper (2) each 45.5cm x 35.5cm (18in x 14in) Private British collection Brockhurst had experimented with printmaking in the 1910s, but it was not until the early ‘20s that he committed to etching in earnest. In a market increasingly oversaturated with etchings of landscapes and urban views, Brockhurst concentrated on portraiture, many of which were transpositions of compositions he had painted in the late 1910s and early ‘20s. He soon achieved distinction for his rendering of skin, hair and textiles with astonishing naturalism. Each composition is imbued with a refined stillness, with flesh that appears almost to glow and to possess conceivable weight and mass. From 1928 Brockhurst joined the Royal Academy Schools as a visiting teacher and met the sixteen year old Kathleen Woodward, who went by ‘Dorette’. She became his new muse, and the pair later married. In 1939 the couple moved to America where Brockhurst enjoyed great acclaim. Commissions from prominent figures including Marlene Dietrich, The Duchess of Windsor and J. Paul Getty helped crystallise his legacy as one of the most important British portrait artists of the early twentieth century. A retrospective of Brockhurst’s portraiture was held at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Graves Gallery in Sheffield and the City Art Gallery in his native Birmingham.

Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) Portrait of Charlotte Elizabeth Hollingsworth Oil on board, 60 x 47cm (23½ x 18½'') Signed Gerald Brockhurst's portrait of Florence Forsyth attracted much attention when it came under the hammer at Ada

              Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) Portrait of Charlotte Elizabeth Hollingsworth Oil on board, 60 x 47cm (23½ x 18½'') Signed Gerald Brockhurst's portrait of Florence Forsyth attracted much attention when it came under the hammer at Adam's. The painting had been commissioned by Florence's father, who worked for Norwich Union in Dublin, in the late 1920s. This portrait has as its subject his wife, Charlotte Hollingsworth, Florence's mother. She makes an imposing figure against a muted, mountainous background, but rather than projecting hauteur or distance, she has a notably benign, warm presence, skillfully conveyed by the artist. Brockhurst was celebrated as a society portrait painter from the early 1920s. From Edgebaston, Birmingham, he was recognised as precociously gifted at drawing from an early age, even though he was a poor student academically. His aptitude gained him early entry to art school. His self-portrait as an art student, painted when he was just 15, is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Visiting France and Italy on a scholarship, he was much taken with the work of several Italian renaissance painters, including Botticelli and Piero della Francesca, influencing the classical poise of his mature style. While travelling he met, and married, Anaïs Melisande Folin and they spent most of the First World War years in Ireland, including in Connemara, where he posed and painted Folin as Ireland personified. He also made portraits of others in Ireland including poet Francis McNamara and Aileen Cox. The latter portrait, with graphic works he made in Ireland, is in the National Gallery of Ireland. Back in London from 1919, he became a much sought-after portrait painter, and was also recognised as a printmaker of brilliance. His capacity to lend his sitters film star aura, positioning them skillfully lit against low horizon lines in almost photographic images, gained him many prestigious sitters. His pre-eminence was only disrupted when his relationship with his model Kathleen 'Dorette' Woodward became front-page news and his marriage broke up. He and Woodward decamped to the United States, where he attracted another succession of well-known clients (Merle Oberon, Marlene Dietrich, J Paul Getty among them). By the time of his death in 1978 he was, though, largely neglected. A number of exhibitions and sales have revived interest in his work over the last two decades. Aiden Dunne

              Est: £8,000 - £12,000

§ Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (British 1890-1978) Adolescence (Kathleen Nancy Woodward), 1932 (Fletcher 75) signed in pencil (in the margin lower right), from the unnumbered edition of 90, etching on wove paper (plate 26.5cm x 37cm (10 1/2in x 14 3/4in); sheet 33.6cm x 45.6cm (131/4in x 17 7/8in), unframed) Adolescence is the most famous and virtuoso image of Brockhurst’s career and is widely considered a masterpiece of twentieth-century printmaking. Having shown early promise and commitment to his studies, Brockhurst enrolled at Birmingham School of Art aged just twelve years old. He later entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1907. Brockhurst’s trajectory to success was set early on, as in both schools he was awarded many of their highest accolades. After travel in France and Italy before the outbreak of World War One, followed by a five-year period spent living in Ireland, Brockhurst eventually re-settled in the English capital. Over the course of the 1920s he made his name in artistic circles, foremost as an outstanding printmaker at this point in time, while his reputation as a painter of extraordinary skill would come to fruition a decade later. Adolescence is rightly regarded as a significant artistic achievement. In 1924, Hugh Stokes encapsulated the artist’s technique as follows: ‘What…[Brockhurst]…is gradually attaining… is a soft and velvety richness of quality in which line disappears, although the form is based upon line.’ It is a startling process which results in a remarkable level of finesse. Brockhurst’s ability to convey such an extraordinary variety of texture and tone in Adolescence make it a prized work among collectors, as too does its period elegance and subtle sensuality. As with many of history’s great artworks, the backstory can add as much appeal for collectors as can the aesthetics of the image itself. Adolescence is one such example of this. Brockhurst had attracted scandal (with the added benefit of renown) due to his affair with Kathleen Woodward, a 16-year-old life model for whom he subsequently left his wife and former muse Anaïs Folin. In the manner of his friend Augustus John, Brockhurst re-christened Kathleen ‘Dorette’, and she came to feature in many of his most successful and notable portraits. In Adolescence, Dorette is depicted seated nude on her bed, assessing herself in a dressing-table mirror, lost in her interior world. It is an idealisation of young womanhood, a subject that preoccupied much of Brockhurst’s career, but it is also a study of nascent sexuality. It remains Brockhurst’s most overtly sensual image.
