    August Bromeis (1813-1881) “Southern Landscape with Temple Ruins in Evening Light” Oil on mahogany panel. Dimensions: 13.5 × 18 cm. Frame: 26 × 31 cm. Signed lower left in red: A. Bromeis. August Bromeis, an important representative of the Kassel School of painting and later a professor at the local academy, devoted his work primarily to heroic and idealized landscape painting. The present cabinet piece shows a characteristic, atmospheric compilation of Italian motifs. Beneath a dynamic evening sky, whose diffuse light models the cloud formations in delicate shades of yellow and grey, the silhouette of an ancient temple complex appears in the middle ground. The fine brushwork and subtle handling of light emphasize the melancholic romanticism of the ruin landscape—a theme that Bromeis perfected during and after his stays in Italy (including Rome from 1833 to 1848). The detailed painting technique on a wooden panel lends the scene a particular sense of depth and intimacy. The work is in good condition consistent with age, with fine craquelure. The reverse shows the natural grain of the wooden panel. Housed in an ornate gilt frame of the period. SHIPPING TO THE USA MUST BE ARRANGED BY THE BUYER.
