    Est: €200 - €250

JOAN BROSSA CUERVO (Barcelona, 1919 - 1998) . "Visual poem", 1989. Lithography on paper. Copy 34/50. Signed and justified at the bottom. Measurements: 48,5 x 36,5 cm; 60 x 48 cm (frame). Brossa was a poet for whom there were no genre distinctions (literary, scenic, visual, objectual...), who began writing during the Civil War. He was co-founder of "Dau al Set" together with Ponç, Tàpies, Ciuxart and Tharrats, and throughout his career he received the Lletra d'Or, City of Barcelona, the UNESCO Picasso Medal, the National Plastic Arts Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and the National Theater Award from the Generalitat. In all of his work is present the concept of art as visuality, as spectacle. His visual poetry and his posters constitute the best known part of his work, to the point that in this field Brossa became a world reference. From the seventies onwards he manipulated objects to deepen their meaning, or to represent the bare concept, through everyday objects and poems. All of Brossa's poetry is full of references to visuality, and perhaps that is why he also entered the world of plastic art. From his beginnings, in 1941, Brossa created visual poems of a calligrammatic type. His first object, "Escorça", a true "objet trouvé", dates from 1943. And 1951 is the first object made expressly, from the association of two distant realities (in this case a hammer and a letter composed of two others). But it is from 1959 that the poet intensifies his visual research with the "Suites de poésie visuelle" (Suites of visual poetry). In these fragile compositions will already be the germ of many of the future visual poems. During the sixties and, more specifically, during the seventies, the best known Brossian visual poems and objects were conceived and later published. Their subject matter will be the same as that of the poems: socio-political denunciation, reflection on the meaning of words and things, surprising games, etc. But the material will no longer be only words, but letters and other elements loved by Brossa such as Fregoli, carnival, sleight of hand, etc. It will be from the exhibition at the Fundació Miró in Barcelona in 1986, "Joan Brossa o les paraules són les cosas", and the anthology at the MNCA Reina Sofia in 1991, when the poet begins to be recognized in the country and worldwide. This allowed him to carry out a series of more complex projects, which resulted in installations and what he called corporeal poems, or interventions on urban spaces.

JOAN BROSSA CUERVO (Barcelona, 1919 - 1998). "Spain".1971. Collage-lithograph, copy 19/100. Signed and justified in pencil.

    Est: €1,200 - €1,400

JOAN BROSSA CUERVO (Barcelona, 1919 - 1998). "Spain".1971. Collage-lithograph, copy 19/100. Signed and justified in pencil. Size: 38 x 56 cm; 41 x 59 cm (frame). Brossa was a poet for whom there were no distinctions of genre (literary, scenic, visual, objectual...), who began writing during the Civil War. He was a co-founder of "Dau al Set" together with Ponç, Tàpies, Ciuxart and Tharrats, and throughout his career he received the Lletra d'Or, City of Barcelona, UNESCO Picasso Medal, the National Plastic Arts Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and the National Theatre Award from the Generalitat. In 1943 he began to work with object poems, which began to be exhibited publicly from 1956 onwards, often in collaboration with painters such as Miró, Tàpies and Ponç. It was from 1960 onwards that his plastic work reached its peak, both in number and depth. In that year he produced the visual poem Cerilla and in 1965 the artist's book Novel-la (the latter in collaboration with Antoni Tàpies), both considered masterpieces of universal conceptual art. The Brossian object evolved towards the installation, often large-format and often ephemeral. In this respect, the intervention in all the exhibition spaces of the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona in 1994 stands out. Over time, Brossa's plastic work reached its civic dimension: his corporeal visual poems were installed in public spaces as passable poems that were integrated into the everyday reality of Barcelona. Later, these corporeal poems would reach many places in Catalonia and also the Balearic Islands, Andorra, Germany and Cuba.

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

JOAN BROSSA CUERVO (Barcelona, 1919 - 1998). "The reading". 1989 Poem-object. Signed. Limited edition. In methacrylate urn. It is part of important museum collections, such as the MACBA Collection, Barcelona. Measurements: 9 x 63 x 32 cm. Joan Brossa, the great creator of visual poems, unfolds before the spectator questions or messages whose deciphering requires several keys. Faced with an open book and a black mask perched on its blank pages, our imagination is activated in search of metaphors that associate reading with interpretative freedom, fantasy and the irreverence of carnivals, opening us to new ways of thinking and perceiving reality. It encourages us to be active readers, so the work can also be a warning to those who consume information with a closed mind, limiting themselves to travel along known paths. Each book is a window to the world. Brossa was a poet for whom there were no distinctions of genre (literary, scenic, visual, objectual...), who began writing during the Civil War. JOAN BROSSA CUERVO (Barcelona, 1919 - 1998). "Country".1988. Poem-object, issue 6/10. Signed and numbered on the base. In methacrylate urn. Provenance: Joan Prats Gallery, Barcelona. This sculpture represented Spain at the Venice Biennale in 1997. Measurements: 42,3 x 31 x 31 cm. In this poem-object, the pinnacle of the artist's production, Joan Brossa carried out a metonymic game: the "country" of soccer (ball) and folklore (comb), quintessence respectively of the masculine and feminine stereotype in the eyes of the European. The antithesis between the feminine (hair ornament associated with Andalusian folklore and traditional weddings) and the masculine (soccer players) is also between the old (costumbrismo) and the new, sport as a new industry-brand. The poet and multifaceted artist Joan Brossa was co-founder of "Dau al Set", and throughout his career he received the Lletra d'Or, City of Barcelona, the UNESCO Picasso Medal, the National Plastic Arts Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and the National Theater Award from the Generalitat. His visual poetry and his posters constitute the best known part of his work, to the point that in this field Brossa has become a world reference. He has been the subject of anthological exhibitions in galleries and museums in Spain, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Brazil, among other countries.
