Property from a Private Collector, Philadelphia and Hilton Head Island Description: John Henry Brown (Philadelphia, 1818-1891), Portrait Miniature of a Woman in a Blue Coat, 1885, watercolor on ivory, signed J. Henry Brown and dated 1885 along lower left edge, the woman with light brown curly hair wearing a blue coat with blue buttons and bar pin, with landscape in the background, the interior with artists studio relocation card, 'moving from 1330 Chestnut Street to 1520/22 Chestnut St, Studio 9, Philadelphia', in a wood and gilt-metal frame. Provenance: with magazine cut-out from Rosegrove Antiques, David Groverman and P.J. Rosenfeld, Ardmore PA. Frame size: 7 1/4 in. x 6 1/4 in. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, John Henry Brown trained under Arthur Armstrong. He worked in Philadelphia and gained prominence, painting the upper class, including Abraham Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson and James Buchanan. His work can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum. JOHN HENRY FOLEY(Irish 1818-1874) Oliver Goldsmith Bronze with dark brown patina Stamped on base "J.H. FOLEY, R.A. LONDON" and "Elkington and Co." Height 19.8 inches (50.5 cm) John Henry Foley was an Irish sculptor who worked in London. At the age of 13, he began to study drawing and modeling at the Royal Dublin Society where he took several first-class prizes. At 17, Foley was admitted into the Royal Academy in London where he exhibited his works from 1839-1861. The statue is a reduction of the monument erected in Ireland in front of Trinity College in Dublin in 1861. Oliver Goldsmith (Irish 1730-1774) was a prominent novelist, poet, and playwright particularly known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield and he is thought to have written the children?s tale The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes, the origin of the phrase ?goody two-shoes.?

PROVENANCE: The the notation on this piece " from a daguerre " clearly documents the impact that photography had on 19th century portraiture. The existence of the daguerreotype of the sitters who were later painted illustrates this point, particularly in lot 141 where the portrait is an identical image to the photograph.
