  • JOHN LEWIS BROWN (BORDEAUX, 1892 - PARIS, 1890)
    Oct. 30, 2025

JOHN LEWIS BROWN (BORDEAUX, 1892 - PARIS, 1890)

    Est: €900 - €1,500

John Lewis Brown (Bordeaux, 1892 - Paris, 1890) Oil on panel. 24,5 x 19 cm.   He was a French painter and lithographer of Scottish descent. He spent much of his childhood in Bordeaux, at Château Brown, in the elegant equestrian and artistic circles to which his family had moved. This childhood would leave its mark on his work, especially his hunting scenes, which can now be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Libourne, and the Tate in London. It was there that he developed his interest in and love for horses, which feature prominently in many of his works.   In 1841, his family moved to Paris, where he taught himself to paint by observing in museums. He exhibited his works for the first time at the Salon in 1848, the vast majority of which depicted equestrian scenes. In 1852, commissioned by the state, he received an order to create a copy of Rembrandt's Christ at Emmaus.    He led a worldly life in Paris, never ceasing to paint, and, like many others, Brown is considered by the people of the world as an artist and by artists as a worldly man. Thanks to this dual appearance, Brown remains the privileged chronicler of a particular society at a particular time. He is one of the last “painters of customs” to preserve the annals of a closed world which, moreover, could only survive by remaining closed. He quickly gained a reputation. In 1859, he returned to painting horses, draft horses, and stable interiors, which testify to his lively admiration for Géricault.    Later, his favorite subjects were hunting scenes and military themes, which he enjoyed setting in the era of Louis XV. But all his subjects were always pretexts for painting horses and, sometimes, dogs. He also depicted horsemen and horsewomen on rides and, later, undoubtedly under the influence of Degas, given his admiration for Manet and the Impressionists, scenes of races with jockeys. In 1870, he went to the front as a battle observer and painted, emphasizing the tragic aspect: “Reischoffen,” “Episode from the Battle of Froeschwiller,” “Hohenlinden.” In 1903, the Musée du Luxembourg organized an exhibition of his engraved work and, on the centenary of his birth in 1929, a Parisian gallery paid tribute to him with a retrospective of his work, which had been somewhat forgotten at the time.   Reference bibliography:  -https://onlinecollection.hughlane.ie/people/350/john-lewis-brown -https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/john-lewis-brown Fine art
