    Phiz alias Browne, Hablot Knight (Lambeth 1815 - 1822). 10 Original-Stahlstichplatten. Zwischen 1845 - 1866. Pro Platte je 2 Illustrationen (davon 3 in der Platte signiert) zu Werken von Charles Lever. Plattengröße jeweils 29 x 22,5 cm. Browne arbeitete u.a. für Charles Dickens, fertigte mehrere Zeichnungen für den Punch und schuf Illustrationen zu mehr als zwanzig Romanen von Charles Lever. Brownes Arbeiten wurden auf Stahlplatten übertragen, da diese eine erheblich höhere Auflage als Kupferplatten ergaben.- Enthält 1 Platte zu „The O“Donaghue“ (1845), 3 Platten zu „The Daltons“ (1852), 3 Platten zu „The Martins of Cro“ Martin“ (1856), 2 Platten zu „Davenport Dunn“ (1859) sowie 1 Platte zu „Luttrell of Arran“ (1866).- Platten verso teils mit Prägestempel der Firma John Sellers, Sheffield oder geprägter Nummer, 2 Platten signiert.- Teils etwas oxidiert bzw. angerostet. Phiz aka Browne, Hablot Knight (Lambeth 1815 - 1822). 10 original steel engraving plates. Between 1845 and 1866. 2 illustrations per plate (3 of which are signed in the plate) for works by Charles Lever. Plate size 29 x 22.5 cm each. Browne worked for Charles Dickens, among others, created several drawings for Punch and illustrations for more than twenty novels by Charles Lever.     This ornately bound album contains six original unpublished oil paintings from Hablot Knight Browne a.k.a Phiz. The paintings are original illustrations depicting Charles Dickens's work and were done circa 1860. The paintings are all presented matted in stiff card bound in blue morocco gilt with gilt edges done by Riviere & Son. Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) aka Phiz was the illustrator for ten of the works of Charles Dickens. He was an English artist and illustrator. He also illustrated books for Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth. The works he illustrated for Dickens included David Copperfield, Pickwick, Dombey and Son, Martin Chuzzlewit and Bleak House. Provenance: Alan L. Weiner (sold at his sale at Christies in 1996). The Martin Nason Collection of Dickensiana.

    Life and Labours of Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" ... With One Hundred and Thirty Illustrations. Signed in pencil by Browne and the engraver. Browne (1815--1882), better known as “Phiz,” was one of the pre-eminent Victorian book illustrators of the middle third of the nineteenth century. He was particularly celebrated as the illustrator for Dickens’ novels-in-parts, succeeding Robert Seymour on Pickwick Papers, and continuing through Martin Chuzzlewit, David Copperfield, Dombey and Son, Nicholas Nickleby, and A Tale of Two Cities. He also illustrated works by Anthony Trollope and William H. Ainsworth. This copy is unique and has been greatly extended. Two hand-colored original plates to preface with hundreds of extra engravings with proof plates. Bookplate for Leslie C. Staples (1896-1980), Hon Secretary of the Fellowship (1940-1946).     HABLOT KNIGHT BROWN (PHIZ) (1815-1882) Photographer on the beach. Likely one of a series of country and seaside scenes which Brown executed in the 1860s. Watercolor and wash on paper mounted to board. 172x240 mm; 6 3/4x9 1/2 inches, sheet. Signed "Phiz" in pencil, lower left image. Cornered to matte. H.K. Brown, known by his pseudonym "Phiz," was most famous for his illustrations of Dickens novels, but also contributed to newspapers and magazines of the mid-nineteenth century. In 1869 he published a book of images titled Sketches of the Seaside and Country, containing pictures similar to this amusing scene featuring a photographer battling the uneven terrain of sand and wind, attempting to photograph a family with a cumbersome glass plate camera.

Browne Hablot Knight, alias Phiz, (Kensinghton 1815 - Brighton 1892) English painter, watercolorist and engraver. He illustrated books by Charles Dickens and other famous writers. Phiz was above all a friend and a collaborator of the famous writer. His remarkable work of illlustrator brought him a medal by the Arts Society in 1832, and by the Royal Academy in 1878.
