The following is an excerpt from the report by Professor Alberto Cottino, Turin, November 9, 2025: The canvas depicts "a glass basin with peaches, plums, and jasmine flowers placed outdoors on the edge of a rocky ridge, seen against the light. At the foot of the ridge are bunches of white and black grapes, figs, pumpkin, watermelon, pomegranates, more peaches, and plums. In the background is a mountain, its summit covered by a cloud that, in my opinion, could allude to Mount Vesuvius erupting." "This is, in fact, an autograph variant of remarkable quality from the painting I published in my monograph on Abraham Brueghel (no. 99, p. 146)... the fundamental difference is the presence of a split watermelon in the background instead of the metal vase filled with flowers." “The painting studied here must be considered an important rediscovery, as it was previously known only from an old black-and-white photograph (Sotheby's auction, 1981)…”. “The fruits are depicted with great naturalistic meticulousness, typical of the Flemish painter who – despite his full commitment to Italian Baroque culture – never completely abandoned the descriptive and ‘optical’ approach to nature typical of his native culture”. “It is a work of the highest quality, dating from the painter's Neapolitan period… we know that there was a dramatic eruption of Vesuvius in 1682, and it is possible that the painter may be alluding to that event”. “In a painting like the one studied here, one clearly sees the fluidity and freshness of color that the eighteenth-century Neapolitan biographer Bernardo De Dominici aptly describes in reference to Brueghel's Neapolitan works”. “It is precisely in paintings like the one analyzed here that one can legitimately discern the exquisite, inimitable synthesis between Flemish naturalism and Italian Baroque taste that would make Abraham Brueghel one of the great European exponents of the still life genre in the second half of the seventeenth century.” A. Rahmen. - Beiliegt eine Expertise von Dr. Klaus Ertz vom 29. Dezember 2021. - Der aus der berühmten Malerfamilie Brueghel stammende Abraham war der Sohn von Jan Brueghel dem Jüngeren und erhielt schon in jungen Jahren bei seinem Vater Malunterricht. In Antwerpen wurde er 1655 Mitglied der Lukasgilde. Er blieb jedoch nicht mehr lange in seiner Heimatstadt, schon ab 1659 ist er in Rom nachweisbar. Hier gelangte er mit seinen duftigen und naturalistischen Blumenstillleben schnell zu Erfolg. Für die Verbindung von Blumenstillleben und Figuren zog Brueghel, ebenso wie sein Zeitgenosse Mario Nuzzi, Figurenmaler hinzu. Wie Ertz in seinem Gutachten feststellt ist bei diesen Zusammenarbeiten das wie aus "einem Guss" wirkende Ergebnis besonders bemerkenswert. Er weist die Putten dem aus Frankreich stammenden und zeitgleich mit Brueghel in Rom tätigen Guillaume Courtois zu. Dieser war Schüler von Pietro da Cortona, dessen Stil er beibehalten sollte. Ertz datiert das Gemäldepaar in die 1670er Jahre.

Abraham se montre très doué et réussit à vendre à sa première toile alors qu'il n'a encore que 15 ans. Il se rend en Italie où il entre au service du Prince Antonio Ruffio de Sicile et après un passage à Rome, il s'installe à Naples en 1671. S'il débute dans le style de son père, Abraham se tournera vers la peinture de fleurs suivant le style de Daniel Seghers.

Against a dark landscape background, a swimming little boy in a long, partly decorated robe, next to him his little sister in a dress with a white bonnet; she is sitting on a red cushion decorated with a golden tassel, which is lying on a stone block. In her right hand she is holding a pair of yellow daffodils, while more flowers lie in her lap. There is also a large decorative vase on the right, from which some red carnations and pink flowers protrude. The floral still life can be attributed to Abraham Bruegehl (1631-1697). A copper kettle can also be seen at the lower right edge. Loving depiction of the brother and sister, who are both gazing attentively out of the picture. Oil on canvas. 99 x 72 cm.

This oil on copper, attributed to Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp, 1631-1697), is an exquisite sample of the refinement and meticulousness characteristic of the Flemish Baroque in the field of floral painting. The composition displays a profusion of flowers in various stages of bloom, with a vibrant chromatic palette that highlights the botanical diversity depicted in meticulous detail. Roses, peonies, anemones and other floral species form a garland framing a sculptural bust of classical appearance, set in a dark niche. The arrangement of the elements reveals a remarkable mastery of the chiaroscuro technique, where the light caresses the petals and leaves, contrasting with the deep shadows of the architectural background. This juxtaposition between the ephemeral nature of the flowers and the stony solidity of the bust generates a symbolic tension: the fragility of the perishable versus the permanence of art and memory. In the tradition of Flemish still life and garland painting, this work is not only an exercise in technical virtuosity, but also a reflection on the transience of beauty and the inevitability of the passage of time. FRÜCHTE- UND BLUMENSTILLLEBEN MIT SILBERGEFÄSS Öl auf Leinwand. 65,6 x 91 cm. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen vom. 21. Januar 2022. In der beiliegenden Expertise wird das Bild dem Künstler zugewiesen und in die 1670er Jahre datiert. Das großformatige Gemälde zeigt Früchte und Blumen dichtgedrängt und aufgebaut vor dunkler Rückwand mit links-seitlichem Ausblick in eine Parklandschaft mit Steinvase. Als Gegenstück hat der Maler rechts eine große silberne Henkelvase in die Komposition gesetzt. Der Malstil unterscheidet sich hier von den frühen Werken des Malers entschieden zugunsten einer weicheren Farbauffassung. In der beiliegende Expertise wird das Bild in die 1670er Jahre datiert. Anmerkung: Bei dem Gemälde handelt es sich um eine Wiederholung nach dem nur etwas größeren „Stillleben mit Früchten und Blumen“ von 1675, das sich im Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam befindet (dort mit den Maßen: 74,89 x 97,3 cm.). Der Vergleich zeigt nur wenige, kaum merkliche Änderungen, wie etwa ein Blümchen unterhalb der blauen Trauben rechts unten im Bild. Notes: The painting is a copy after a slightly larger Still Life with Fruit and Flowers from 1675, which is held at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam (there measuring 74.89 x 97.3 cm). The comparison shows only a few, barely noticeable changes, such as a small flower below the blue grapes in the lower right of the painting.

Un maestro della pittura morta fra Anversa, Roma e Napoli, Rome 2023, p. 153, fig. 108 (as Abraham Brueghel) Alberto Cottino compares the present painting with the canvas conserved in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (inv. no. 6575), for ‘its excellent pictorial handling, enhanced by a brilliant range of colours’ (see op. cit. Cottino, 2007). The various Roman influences, certainly more in line with his painting style, would push Brueghel’s art towards an Italianising taste, without him renouncing his typically Nordic analytical approach, which translated into a lucidity of definition to detail in the fruit and flowers. The son of Jan Brueghel the Younger, Abraham was part of the celebrated family dynasty of artists and received his early training in his father’s Antwerp workshop. He travelled to Italy and is documented in Rome as early as 1659. Abraham then moved to Naples in around 1670, where he left a decorative trace in the already rich tradition of Neapolitan still life. His success is moreover testified by several important commissions he received, including from Don Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán VII, Marquis of Carpio. Cottino dates the present canvas to Abraham’s Neapolitan period, when the Flemish painter’s style underwent a Baroque evolution, taking on greater breadth and opulence. Brueghel’s confidence in handling the brush was witnessed by Bernardo De Dominici, who praised his work : ‘And he was so fluent and easy in inventing composition that he drew and painted his pictures with such a freshness of colour at the first glance that painters were satisfied and those who looked at them were amazed, using beautiful, well-mixed colours that can still be seen today with the same freshness with which he painted them’ (B. De Dominici, Le Vite de’ pittori, scultori ed architetti napoletani, Naples 1742–45, vol. III, p. 297).

GESCHWISTERPAAR Öl auf Leinwand. 99 x 72 cm. Ungerahmt, lediglich am unteren Rand schmale Leiste. Vor dunklem landschaftlichen Hintergrund ein schwimmender kleiner Junge in langem, teils verzierten Gewand, neben ihm seine kleine Schwester in Kleidchen mit weißer Haube; diese sitzt auf einem roten, mit goldener Quaste verziertem Kissen, das auf einem Steinblock liegt. In ihrer rechten Hand hält sie ein paar gelbe Narzissen, während in ihrem Schoß weitere Blumen liegen. Auf der rechten Seite zudem eine große dekorative Vase, aus der einige rote Nelken und rosafarbene Blumen herausragen. Das Blumenstillleben ist Abraham Bruegehl (1631-1697) zuschreibbar. Zudem ist am unteren rechten Rand ein Kupferkessel zu sehen. Liebevolle Darstellung des Geschwisterpaars, die beide aufmerksam aus dem Bild herausblicken. (14008957) (18)

FLORA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 88 x 76 cm. In vergoldetem blattwerkreliefierten Rahmen. Vor architektonisch aus einem erhöhten kannelierten Säulenstumpf gebildetem Hintergrund die Halbfigur einer jungen Frau. Ihr Haupt von einem Blütenkranz bekrönt, ihre Hände eine Rose haltend bzw. auf einem prall gefüllten Blütenkorb liegend, wobei die Farben Rot, Rosa und Blau dominieren. Das Gemälde erinnert sowohl an ein Gemälde, das Antonio Lucchese Franchi zugeschrieben ist und unter Lot 188 am 15. April 2016 versteigert wurde, als auch an ein Gemälde, welches in der Fototeca Zeri verzeichnet ist und vor einiger Zeit bei Sotheby‘s New York als Abraham Brueghel zugeschrieben angeboten worden ist. Un Maestro della natura morta fra Anversa, Roma e Napoli, Foligno 2023, p. 93, n. 38 Il dipinto è una fondamentale testimonianza dell'attività romana di Abraham Brueghel, in cui l'autore esibisce tutta la sua esuberanza barocca e il talento nordico per la puntuale descrizione dei frutti e dei fiori, contrassegnando l'evoluzione della natura morta capitolina del secondo Seicento. Non si deve altresì dimenticare l'eccezionale tradizione pittorica della dinastia familiare dei Brueghel, che il nostro esprime con assoluta padronanza e modernità, in modo particolare per l'innovativa concezione scenica e luministica, che delinea con lucentezza le forme e impreziosisce le tonalità. Giunto nella Città Eterna nel 1659, il pittore raggiunse velocemente un grande successo e venne accolto a pieno titolo nel difficile mondo artistico romano, intrecciando una lunga corrispondenza con il celebre amatore d'arte Antonio Ruffo e con il mercante fiammingo Gaspar Roomer, finché la sua fama si diffondesse tra i prestigiosi collezionisti dell'epoca, che 'menavano vanto di possedere gli esiti del suo pennello', così troviamo la citazione dei suoi dipinti negli inventari Chigi, Pamphilj, Colonna, Orsini e Borghese. Non da meno fu il successo che riscosse a Napoli (1676), ben documentato dal giudizio espresso dal De Dominici che lo giudicò il migliore a dipingere fiori e frutti, in virtù della mimesi e dell'amplificazione scenica delle sue rappresentazioni, ben distanti da quelle arcaiche e silenziose concepite da Giovan Battista Ruoppolo e Giuseppe Recco. Tornando alla nostra opera, molteplici sono gli spunti di confronto, si veda ad esempio la simile composizione pubblicata da Cottino (Cfr. Cottino 2023, p. 92, n. 37), coadiuvata per il brano di figura da Guglielmo Cortese, secondo una formula illustrativa concepita da Michelangelo da Campidoglio. La collaborazione di pittori di figura con il celebre naturamortista è infatti cosa ben nota, lo testimonia altresì una lettera del 1666 a don Antonio Ruffo, in cui egli scrive di aver realizzato nature morte con figure dipinte da Giacinto Brandi, Baciccio, Maratti e Guglielmo Cortese (Cfr. V. Ruffo, La Galleria Ruffo a Messina nel secolo XVII, Roma 1917, pp. 172 e ss., cap. IX, pp. 21-64, 95-128, 237-250). Tuttavia, secondo Ludovica Trezzani e le annotazioni critiche della notifica, in questo caso l'opera è da assegnare in toto alla mano del maestro. L'idea di raffigurare 'Belle che raccolgono frutti' riscosse evidentemente un notevole apprezzamento e fu Stefano Bottari nel 1960 il primo a pubblicarne i dipinti, partendo da una versione conservata alla Gemäldegalerie di Dresda (olio su tela, cm 133X98) e successivamente l'argomento fu ripreso da Dieter Graf ed Eric Schleier (Cfr. Natura morta con anguria, fiori e bacile con pesche Olio su tela, cm 45X120 I caratteri di stile e la composizione riflettono aspetti della cultura pittorica di area romana e in particolare l'influenza di Abraham Brueghel (Anversa, 1631 ; Napoli, 1697). A questo proposito si guardino le simili tele conservate alla Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica di Palazzo Corsini a Roma. Tuttavia, il bacile di vetro e le stesure ben evocano le opere dei Castelli, ma ancor più della famiglia Stanchi il cui ultimo esponente, Nicolò, fu attivo fino al 1690. Detto ciò, la tela in esame riflette tenuamente i riflessi naturalistici seicenteschi, mentre appaiono preponderanti quegli aspetti di delicatezza decorativa di sapore rocaille, suggerendo di conseguenza una data d'esecuzione già settecentesca e la mano di un autore verosimilmente formatosi nella bottega degli Stanchi.

Framed Questa brillante composizione, straripante di fiori e frutta eppure rigorosamente calibrata, va ricondotta al periodo romano di Abraham Brueghel, presumibilmente nel settimo decennio del Seicento. La tela testimonia efficacemente il fertile influsso sul pittore dei modelli di Michelangelo Pace da Campidoglio e Michelangelo Cerquozzi a questa altezza cronologica già sapientemente metabolizzati. La vivacità e varietà dell'impaginazione, già pienamente barocca, combina felicemente alcuni dei motivi più ricorrenti della pittura di Brueghel, in particolare i sontuosi gigli rosati, i gelsomini e la zucca. Un composizione assai simile, salvo che per minime varianti, è stata recentemente esitata presso Christie's New York (20 Ottobre 2020, l. 75).

Früchtestillleben mit Weinflöte und Blumenstrauss Öl auf Leinwand. 40 x 55,5 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, vom 12. August 2022, in Kopie. Vor braunem Hintergrund auf einer wohl steinernen Platte im Vordergrund liegend ein Zweig mit grünen Früchten und Blättern sowie davorliegend gelblich glänzende meist rote Kirschen mit Glanzlichtern und einzelnen Wassertropfen. Im Hintergrund links ein hohes Flötenglas teils gefüllt mit Wein, erneut ein Zweig mit roten Kirschen, rechts daneben ein kleiner Blumenstrauß mit Nelken und am rechten Bildrand eine weitere Platte mit diversen Früchten. Laut Ertz sind die Wassertropfen und auch das halbvolle Weinglas reine Vanitas-Symbole. Für ihn wurde das gut erhaltene Gemälde in den 1670er-Jahren in Italien geschaffen. Anmerkung: Abraham Brueghel war ein flämischer Maler des Barock aus der Brueghel-Dynastie, der vor allem auf Blumen und Früchte spezialisiert war. Er lebte und wirkte fast ausschließlich in Italien. Roma 1670 private property, Austria Set in a hilly landscape with antique temple architecture is a marble table covered with a truly elaborate yet balanced arrangement. A silver plate and a gold relief jug with handle provide stability in terms of content and form in the abundance of richly moving flower and fruit forms. Additionally, ripe grapes and a broken melon are depicted. Peonies, tulips in various patterns, carnations, roses and irises, whose beauty is about to fade, are presented almost solemnly and convey three-dimensionality. The skilfully used lights emphasise the material charms of the reflecting metals, the brocade fabric and the carefully designed floral splendour to a high degree. Such intricate and finely painted surface textures affirm Abraham Brueghel's masterful handling. Each floral piece is also a vanitas symbol, as indicated by the individual blossoms that have already fallen out of the bouquet, as well as the partly overripe grapes and citrus fruit. The compositional structure, dramatic illumination and spirited brushwork are found several times in the master's oeuvre, as in "Still Life with Watermelon and Roses in Landscape", "Still Life of Flowers and Fruit in Front of Cypresses" or "Flowers and Fruit" (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, inv. no. 1096).

(1631 Antwerpen - 1697 Neapel) Früchtestillleben mit Melone und Blumenstrauß Das in den 1670er Jahren entstandene Stillleben mit seinem effektvollen Licht- und Farbenspiel, den südlichen Früchten und den duftig gemalten Blumen, gehört zu den charakteristischen Kompositionen Abraham Brueghels, dem Sohn von Jan Brueghel dem Jüngeren. Mit ihm als letzten Spross verabschiedete sich die große Malerdynastie aus der Geschichte der Kunst. Abraham Brueghel lernte zwar im Atelier seines Vaters in Antwerpen, doch ging er bereits 1648 nach Italien, so dass er noch kaum prägende Einflüsse seiner flämischen Heimat in sich aufgenommen hatte. Stattdessen wurde er dort zu einem "italienischen Maler" und einem der bedeutendsten Künstler des römischen und neapolitanischen Hochbarock, beeinflusst durch Paolo Porpora und Mario Nuzzi. 1659-1671 war Abraham Brueghel in Rom ansässig, danach in Neapel, wo sich eine bedeutende Stilllebenmalerschule entwickelte. Er spezialisierte sich auf opulente Früchte- und Blumenstillleben, oft mit für die italienische Malerei typischer, dramatischer Lichtführung. Statt der genauen Naturbeobachtung, wie sie der Kunst nördlich der Alpen und auch der flämisch-niederländischen Stilllebenmalerei eigen ist, fand er in Italien zu gänzlich anderen künstlerischen Lösungen. Abraham Brueghel steigerte auch bei diesem Stillleben eine vibrierende Malweise und kraftvolle Höhungen zu gleichsam reiner Malerei. Eine solchermaßen malerische Auflösung der Formen und Oberflächen - wie sie in den Blüten und Blättern sowie in der Melone und der Fontäne im Hintergrund sichtbar ist, ließen ihn zu einem bedeutenden "Italienischen" Meister des hochbarocken Stilllebens werden.
