    Brus, Günter und Birnbaum, Lilian (1938-2024) Self-person, 1987/2015 Colour photography (silver gelatine on baryta) Signed by Günter Brus at lower right and by Lilian Birnbaum at lower left, numbered at bottom centre: 16/35 18 x 12 in / with cardboard bottom: 20 x 13,6 in Günter Brus on the action “Der Selbstmensch”: “One day, Lillian Birnbaum and Peter Stephan Jungk visited us in our summer house in Greisbach near Stainz (Styria). We discussed it at length and developed the idea that Lillian Birnbaum would make a series of photographs of the creation of a life-size drawing in my studio. I outlined my figure with coloured pencils and jotted “The Self-Man” and a few short literary remarks above my head. In the course of time, I felt that I had finished this “phantom drawing” and slit it open vertically down the spine with a blade. I then penetrated the drawing through the slit in order to disappear into the picture. I thus exhibited the action, drawing and writing together, which Lillian Birnbaum captured congenially.” Series of 18 colour photographs

Günter Brus on “Action with Diana”, Graz 2004: “The action was planned in a chrome-yellow ‘poison yellow’ colouring. Food was to be arranged on it in its natural colour, especially meat and fruit (pulp). The action was to be entitled 'The lemon yellow idiot'. I then decided on white. Perhaps the yellow version would have been even more spectacular. [...] My daughter reacted calmly and cheerfully to the completely white ambience. Kurt Krenn photographed the action.” Laminated on cardboard.

Together with his wife Anna, Günter Brus performed "Transfusion" in Otto Muehl's basement studio ("Perinetkeller") without an audience in order to be able to pay particular attention to the design of the photographs. This action, unusual within his oeuvre, was not conceived as a continuous process, but aimed to create a tableau-like effect using painterly elements, which receded in his subsequent actions. For the first time, Brus integrated colour and Hoffenreich accordingly photographed on colour film. In addition to the theme of childbirth, elements from previous works such as "Self-Mutilation" also play a role. The ambivalence between erotic and destructive motifs characterizes this work, and the beautifully produced portfolio is a collector's item. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Anna führte Günter Brus die Aktion "Transfusion" in Otto Mühl's Atelier (Perinetkeller) ohne Publikum durch, um besonderes Augenmerk auf die Gestaltung der Fotografien legen zu können. Diese für sein Werk ungewöhnliche Aktion war nicht als durchgehender Ablauf konzipiert, sondern zielte auf eine tableauhafte Wirkung unter Einsatz von malerischen Komponenten, die in seinen darauffolgenden Aktionen zurücktraten. Erstmals integrierte Brus hier Farbe und entsprechend fotografierte Hoffenreich auf Farbfilm. Neben der Geburtsthematik spielen auch Elemente aus vorangegangenen Werken wie etwa der "Selbstverstümmelung", eine Rolle. Die Ambivalenz zwischen erotischen und zerstörerischen Motiven zeichnet dieses Werk aus, das wunderschön produzierte Portfolio ist ein Sammlerstück.
