BERNARD BRUSSEL-SMITH (1914-1989) INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE SHOW. 1964. 43 3/4x57 inches, 111x144 3/4 cm. Condition A: small repaired tears at edges; unobtrusive vertical fold. Brussel-Smith, born in Greenwich Village, was first and foremost known as a wood engraver. First learned at the New School, wood engraving became the artist's medium of choice for nearly 50 years. Brussel-Smith also worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for corporations, such as Seagrams, and publications, such as Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and Time. Among his most well-known commercial works was a series for the New York Auto Show in the 1950s and '60s, including this abstract design that recalls his engraving background.
