George Buckner, a native of Gifford, Florida, was the oldest of 12 children. George's father passed away when George was in high school, leading him to drop out of school and help his mother financially support the large family. After encountering Harold Newton, Buckner realized that there was money to be made in creating landscapes, prompting him and his brother Ellis to join the Highwaymen. He studied painting with Newton, Livingston Roberts, and Bean Backus, growing to become known as one of the strongest artists among the Highwaymen, particularly noted for his cloudy skies. This single-owner Florida Highwaymen collection was thoughtfully assembled between 1998 and 2004, with works acquired from respected sources such as the A. E. Backus Gallery and Museum, Florida art dealers John Phillips and Bob Lablanc, and noted collectors Ty and Jean Tyson.
