Otis A. Bullard(1816-1853)
O.A.Bullard (Attributed) Landscape Oil Painting c.1837

Lot 13120: O.A.Bullard (Attributed) Landscape Oil Painting c.1837

Auction Date: Jan 29, 2016

Estimate: $600 - $850

Description: This American primitive oil landscape is unsigned, and is painted on a Frost & Adams (a Boston artist materials dealer) canvas, and has an attribution label on the back which says "O.A.Bullard The River 1837". The label is newer, and was on the stretcher when we acquired the painting. I have checked this painting against others by Otis A. Bullard (1816-1853), and cannot definitively say that this is his work. I also do not know what evidence the previous owner had to its authenticity, since the painting appeared in a Massachusetts estate auction. But the label is there, and is now part of the lore of this artwork. All that aside, this is a charming painting. which is instantly recognizable as an American antique. It has previous restoration (about fifty years old) which includes wax relining and retouching. The surface shows even but stable craquelure, which adds to its charm. It has been gently cleaned and coated with a new non-yellowing varnish, and is presented in a new custom-made gold-metal-leafed frame. Painting= 12" x 16", Frame= 15" x 19"...

Estimate: $200 - $400

Description: Otis A. Bullard (American, New York, 1816 - 1853) oil on canvas, portrait believed to be Annah Barker, wearing dark dress and white cotton cap, signed 'O.A. Bullard 1844' lower left, gallery information applied verso, gilt frame, some loss near frame, light craquelure throughout, slight damage to frame, ss. 39 1/4' h. x 34" w. [Provenance: JAMES W. BARKER (1815-1869) lived in New York City on Lexington Avenue and ran for mayor in New York on the Know-Nothing Party ticket. He did not win. Later he moved to Rahway, NJ where he died suddenly in 1869. According to census records of 1850, Annah Barker, age 68, lived with the James Barker family. Therefore we assume that she was James Barker's mother. In the same household was an Abigail Barker, age 31, who must have been the wife. She is obviouly not the person on the painting as the note on the reverse states. The artist of the painting was Otis A Bullard (1816-1853) He died young(37) but had achieved widespread fame. From 1842 to 1853 he exhibited at the National Academy. His works are in the collections of Yale University, Smith College, Harvard University, and others.]...
