The following summer he travelled to Normandy, and ended up in the small coastal town of Larmor in 1884. He painted this charming scene with the imposing 16th century tower numerous times, and was especially drawn to the coastal atmosphere, which afforded the landscape painter a nearly unchanging, diffused light on his subject matter. A larger version of this scene is held by the Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago, Illinois, object number 1991.1. A smaller version of the same scene in oil sold at Sotheby's, New York, April 21, 2023 Cross-Currents in America: The Wolf Family Collection, for $50,800.

DENNIS MILLER BUNKER (American, 1861-1890) Portrait of a Woman, circa 1890 Oil on canvas 22 x 18 inches (55.9 x 45.7 cm) Incised across bottom of canvas: Friday 9 am PROVENANCE: The artist; Mrs. Isabella Stewart Gardner, Boston, Massachusetts 1890; The Detroit Institute of Arts, as gift from Mrs. Gardner, 1907-93; Sotheby's, New York, May 27, 1993, lot 23; Warren Adelson, New York; Babcock Galleries, New York; Private collection, New York. EXHIBITED: St. Botolph Club, Boston, "Dennis Miller Bunker, Memorial Exhibition", 1891, no. 27 (as The Dark Haired Model). LITERATURE: E. Hirschler, Dennis Miller Bunker: American Impressionist, Boston, 1994, p. 179. Bostonian Isabella Stewart Gardner, the preeminent Gilded Age art collector, befriended and championed numerous contemporary artists, such as John Singer Sargent, Henry James, Bernard Berenson, and Dennis Miller Bunker. Born in New York, Bunker moved to Boston in 1885 and, quickly swept under Gardner's wing, painted various portraits of her family, including her brother-in-law and his children. It was through Gardner that Bunker met John Singer Sargent, who would become his great friend and mentor. In 1888, after Sargent left Boston for New York, Bunker inherited his clients, Boston's wealthiest and most prominent families. Portrait of a Woman exemplifies Bunker's facility in capturing human beauty and character with the simplest of compositions. By limiting the color of the model's dress and the background to black tones, he focuses attention on her illuminated, elegantly turned face. This portrait was featured in a memorial exhibition of Bunker's work, organized shortly after his death by fellow artist Charles Platt and other friends. Today major museum collections, in Boston and beyond, possess paintings by Bunker, validating art historian Ted Stebbins' praise: "Bunker is now regarded as one of the major painters at work during the penultimate decade of the nineteenth century in America."

According to Erica E. Hirshler, "In The Station, Bunker looked along the railroad tracks toward the East; the step-gabled silhouetter of the Y.M.C.A. at Berkeley and Boylston streets, the steeple of the Arlington Street Church, and the dome of the State House appear on the horizon. 'Bunker allowed the tracks, railroad cars, and train sheds to dominate the composition. The natural world is limited to the gray sky, linked by a plume of steam to the white snow, which Bunker used as flickering highlight to define architectural details. It is a startlingly modern painting, more akin to the grimy visions of industrial landscapes created in the early twentieth century than it is to the common and persistent nineteenth-century American vision of the railroad as a harbinger of progress in the wilderness. With its free handling of paint and city subject matter, The Station recalls Monet's steaming locomotives at the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris, exhibited at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. It is unlikely that Bunker saw that series, but his new familiarity with Impressionism must have contributed to the confident ease with which he painted his only known urban view" (Dennis Miller Bunker: American Impressionist, Boston, Massachusetts, 1994, p. 62).

McDonough Museum of Art, Inaugural Exhibition, Oct. 1991-May 1992, p. 26Unlike his interior and figure paintings which reflect his allegiance to academic ideologies, Dennis Miller Bunker's landscapes illustrate his innovative reworking of impressionist precepts. His early landscapes, such as Old Hulks, however, exhibit qualities more closely associated with the Barbizon School. In the present picture, Bunker maintains the solidity of form and relegates his palette to limited tones not unlike landscapes by Courbet. Typical to Bunker's depictions of abandoned boats painted before 1888, Old Hulks suggests quietude and isolation through bold forms, dark earthy tones and a penetrating gray light.
