    • Jonas Burgert, Bergung, 2006
      Jun. 06, 2023

      Jonas Burgert, Bergung, 2006

      Est: €50,000 - €70,000

Signed, dated and titled 'JONAS BURGERT -Bergung- Burgert 2006' on canvas verso. With its dense, colour-intensive composition, the fascinating work "Bergung" [rescue] forms the prelude to a three-part group of works from 2006 that is thematically dedicated to the rescue of unconscious people. In the centre of the confined space, a person in an orange suit and cap reminiscent of a harlequin is being transported in a rescue hold. A rod lying between his legs implies an accident during a balancing act. On the left, a figure carries a limp slumped person on his shoulders, outstanding due to the intense yellow of his flower-patterned clothing. On the top right, another man is squatting in an elevated position as an uninvolved observer. Enigmatic details such as the garland he wears as a headdress, the wolf’s head that he’s perched upon and the radially painted circular disc on the wall on the top left further obscure the situation. The misaligned juxtaposition of persons in varying scales, that can be observed here, is just as characteristic of Burgert’s painting as is the contrast of intense colours and restrained shades of grey. He is renowned for dreamlike sequences that only seem to be of a narrative nature; dystopian settings distorted by perspective are populated by enigmatic figures who, in their garish costumes, often conjure up associations with circus scenes. “Unlike animals, humans struggle with their existence, their definition. This is a phenomenon that interests me. When you see a monkey, it looks like a monkey, or a dog looks like a dog. But a human being does not look like a human being, he is dressed up and bears the insignia of his respective culture. This phenomenon interests me throughout human history, which is why I also use very archaic figures. […] I hope to depict a symbol of humanity with my figures.“ (Jonas Burgert, quoted from: exhib.cat. Jonas Burgert, Schutt und Futter, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover 2013, p.22).

    • Jonas Burgert, Bergung II, 2006
      Jun. 06, 2023

      Jonas Burgert, Bergung II, 2006

      Est: €120,000 - €150,000

Signed 'JONAS BURGERT' and signed, dated and titled '- Bergung II - 2006 Jonas Burgert' on canvas verso. With its rich personnel and multi-layered spatial situations, the large-format second painting from the ‘Bergung’ work group - the first of which is also offered in this auction as lot 27 – offers a stage-like scenery that is characteristic of Jonas Burgert’s oeuvre. "Burgert’s characteristic figurative pictorial language appears in the tradition of great world theater, whereby the ‘director’, Burgert, seems to prefer tragedy over comedy in his role as the painting demiurge. His actors, who operate in distorted dimensions, undeviatingly pursue an apparently ritualized activity that is devoid of meaning; one or the other pensive protagonist, perhaps for reason of lethargy, retreats to the status of the observer. An indolent placidness dominates the setting; an atmosphere of coolness and at the same time subdued aggressions hangs in the air. […] With the creation of unknown spaces in pictorial space, which point almost like black holes toward a fourth dimension, paths lead into the abyss of nothing. […] Yet the goal the stoic, drifting actors are pursuing, the story that is supposed to be being told here, remains uncertain. One feels one has been abducted into a surreal fantasy world, believes oneself to be in a floating, dream-like state in which everything is engulfed in a feeling of lost utopia.” (Hans-Peter Wipplinger, Das gemalte Welttheater des Jonas Burgert, in: Jonas Burgert. Lebendversuch, exhib.cat. Kunsthalle Tubingen/Kunsthalle Krems 2010/2011, p.77 f.)

Provenance: Blain Southern, formerly Berlin Private Collection, Germany - acquired from the above Exhibited / Literature: Blain Southern, Jonas Burgert: Stück Hirn Blind, London, 14 October – 22 November 2014 MAMbo Museo D’Arte Moderna di Bologna, Jonas Burgert: Lotsucht / Scandagliodipendenza, Bologna, 26 January – 17 April 2017, with cat.: Lotsucht - Scandagliodipendenza , (ed.) Laura Carlini Fanfogna, Corraini Edizioni January 2017, (double page colour ill.) Jonas Burgert is one of the recent rising stars of the German contemporary art scene. A few years ago, he was living in a garage that also served as his studio. Nowadays, his grand studio in Berlin-Weißensee is the starting point for the stories he tells through his canvasses. Burgert’s figurative paintings of enormous scale often show crowded and very detailed scenes. The artist appears to create his own surrealistic world in every painting. Against a background of earthy tones – soil being a source of life – the artist’s own mystical character creations inhabit the paintings alongside animals and tell their unique stories. Human psychological motivations and why they do certain things or exhibit certain behaviours is the inspiration behind every artwork. Burgert examines our instinctive need to give life sense, direction, and purpose. On the huge canvas of puls führt, we can see a racehorse lying down with one of the artist’s whimsical entities entangled with what might be its possessions on the horse’s back. Staring directly at the viewer, the character holds a tube to the horse’s artery and listens to its pulse. The alignment of the horse’s ears suggests that the animal itself is also listening to its pulse. The artwork reads as a critique of today’s overachieving society. Everyone is in a hurry, trying to accomplish more in less time. But what happens when we lie down and simply listen to our heart beating? This self-induced stress echoes loudly in our bodies through a pounding heart which slowly but steady relaxes and releases the pent-up tension. The underlying question of this artwork could be: If our bodies speak so clearly to us why do we still feel the need to put ourselves under so much pressure?

Burgert, Jonas 1969 Berlin puls spur stop. 2012. Painted bronze. 125 x 90 x 191,5cm. Including base. Signed, dated and numbered on the left shoe sole: J Burgert 2012 1/5 + 2 EA. Number 1/5. Provenance: - Blain Southern, Berlin Exhibitions: - Stadtsparkasse Essen, 2012 Jonas Burgert lives and works in Berlin. There he studied, in 1997, as a master student with Dieter Hacker, before he was awarded a scholarship from the University of the Arts in Berlin to stay in Egypt. Today he is one of the main figures of the international art scene. It's a tormenting sight that the viewer of Burgert's work \puls spur stop\" has to face at the mercy of the enemy. Exhausted and worn out, the depicted person does not even seem to be able to crawl any further. Especially the empty, frozen gaze triggers an urge in the observer to connect with the sufferer in solidarity. Only the proportionally exaggeratedly long fingers seem to reach forward with all remaining energy. In spite of the desperate posture, the fingers continue to reach out. Further upwards, further forwards. The much too long arms are an expression of this never ending striving forward. The short legs can't support the dull body, but the arms and the hands leave the grey concrete base and dare to move beyond the predefined border. Burgert thus raises his arms himself to become a sculpture in a final step. The hands become an expression of resistance and rebellion. The defensive character of the hands is also underlined by the colour accents. The colour distributed on the skin of the suffering person gives the viewer the opportunity to see positive things in the almost destructive exhaustion of the figure. The figure crouches on the grey base, burnt out after an enormous creative achievement. The colour disrupts the grey on grey and thus literally pushes the creative act upon the viewer. Burgert walks a fine line between hope and suffering in a manner typical of him. His works by no means represent hopeless situations. Rather, they always offer the viewer the opportunity to enter into an exchange with the work and, as his own personal situation demands, to understand it as an incentive or even as a warning. Provenance: - Produzentengalerie Hamburg Exhibitions: - Kunsthalle Tübingen/Kunsthalle Krems 2010/2011 Literature: - Schreiber, Daniel J./Wipplinger, Hans-Peter (eds.): Jonas Burgert - Lebendversuch, Cologne 2011, ill. p. 93 (here dated 2004) - Heil, Axel/Schoppmann, Wolfgang: Most wanted - The Olbricht Collection, some recent acquisitions, Cologne 2005, p. 221, ill. p. 68 Burget's monumental painting from 2005 recalls a wall on which people have left their marks. There are various ornaments on it which are also known from architecture, but a continuous design cannot be determined. Rather, they are fragmentary remains that do not refer to a concrete culture. There are references to Arab and European as well as Celtic influences. The implementation of symbols of ancient cultures plays a major role in the artist's work. Even in Burgert's early, abstract works there are always references to ancient Greek, Egyptian and Arabic ornamentation. It is typical of Burgert to let the sceneries in his works play in undefined and timeless places and to provide the viewer with only a very reduced selection of clues, which are also mutually exclusive in their chronological classification. The reason for this is Burgert's intention to trigger a process of self-reflection in the viewers, and the artist sees these processes as timeless and spaceless. The white wall in the work \Traitor\" seems like an imaginary mirror that reflects the emotions of the viewer. The viewer relates each detail of the image to his or her own personal experiences. While putting the individual pieces of the puzzle together, the viewer is confronted with his inner self. This is percisely the fascination of this work. On an almost illusionistically designed ledge in the wall sits a small monkey dressed in two orange sashes with black crosses. With its mouth open, it looks directly at the viewer and thus represents an active, challenging element in the picture. The depiction of animals is typical for the time, but starting in 2003 the subjects became increasingly figurative. At first Burgert began to include animals in his works, later also people. Luft schleift leicht, 2018 Oil on canvas 157.5 x 110.25 in (400 x 280 cm) Jonas Burgert B. 1969, West Berlin, Germany “It is a human duty to feel responsible for our planet.” - Jonas Burgert Jonas Burgert paints to capture the drama and surrealism of everyday life. Using the collision of darkness and light, human and animal, reality and fantasy, his figurative works are intent on tackling the world’s pressing, existential questions and humanity’s desire to find meaning in our existence beyond physicality. Burgert examines human nature, our reasoning, our imagination, and our need to find assured answers – a quest that ultimately is endless. Luft schleift leicht studies the balance between the Earthly and spiritual planes. The combination of bodies, both human and animal, mirror the connection between all living beings in physical and fictional worlds with strong art historical references to Renaissance painting and Flemish masters like Hieronymus Bosch. There are prehistoric fowls and zebras, ghouls and harlequins, Amazons, children, and sometimes the painter himself, all struggling to capture humanity’s vulnerability in an ever-reincarnated theatre performance of colour and form, of fantasy and dream. Each figure plays an essential role within the composition, precluding one central character from emerging. The grid and large scale used in early Renaissance perspective painting is still visible and guides the eye down a linear narrative through an ecologically disastrous ‘lifetime’. Surrounded by thick brushstrokes of impasto, the mass of beings is again reminiscent of the compositional complexity of a Renaissance painting, while the psychoanalytic overtones of the canvas situate the work within the unconscious worlds of the Surrealists, with a Freudian whirlwind of libido and cessation. The timeless absurdity inherent within the painting becomes personal for each individual viewer. We are guided through a story of fragmented scenes, that the viewer thinks to recognize because they tap into the unconscious by combining styles of the past with a fiction of today. Burgert’s oeuvre is grounded in intimacy, distinctly human, and therefore unwaveringly vulnerable in a manner that touches us all.
