BURGKMAIR, HANS 1473 Augsburg–1531 Augsburg Title: Salvator Mundi. Subtitle: Latin transcription (Psalm 94). Date: Ca. 1505-1510. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 28.5 x 22.5cm. Frame: Framed. The painting depicts Christ in a bust portrait in profile, in accordance with the description found in the so-called "Lentulus Letter", which has been in circulation since the Middle Ages. This iconographic type has been preserved in both painting and printmaking and is framed here by a Latin inscription containing quotations from the Old Testament. The provenance of the panel can be traced back to the important Lyversberg Collection in Cologne around 1800, where it remained until it was auctioned at Lempertz in 1971. Over time, the attribution has changed several times: from Andrea Mantegna to Albrecht Dürer and a Dutch master of around 1500, and finally to Hans Burgkmair the Elder, to whom the work was ultimately attributed by Ernst Buchner around 1930 on stylistic grounds. The depiction of Christ with parted, shoulder-length hair and a divided beard follows the idealised description in the Epistle of Lentulus, which had been in circulation since the 14th century. Burgkmair also adopted this type in his woodcuts, particularly in medallion-like compositions with comparable inscriptions. The surrounding inscription combines two biblical passages (Baruch 3:38 and Psalm 44:3), but contains several errors, suggesting an inaccurate transmission or transcription. The pope and the king of Spain retiring from the League of Cambray; two crowned male figures in conversation, another two about to open a door . Woodcut from 'The White King'. Der Weisskunig or The White King was a chivalric novel and thinly disguised biography of the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, (1486–1519) written in German by Maximilian and his secretary between 1505 and 1516. Although not explicitly identified as such in the book, Maximilian appears as the "young" White King, with his father Frederick III represented as the "old" White King. The book is now mainly remembered for the 251 exquisite woodcut illustrations, made in Augsburg between 1514 and 1516, with Hans Burgkmair the Elder and Leonhard Beck as the main artists. This one by Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473-1531) with his monogram HB above the door. ----- This is an impression from the blocks when re-discovered in 1775.

Hans Burgkmair the Elder (German, 1473 - 1531), a woodcut print on paper depicting the Siege of Padua which occurred in 1509 when the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I attempted to retake Padua from the Republic of Venice. After bombarding the city for two weeks he sent a contingent of 7,500 landsknecht mercenaries to assault the walls, as depicted in this woodcut. Hans Burgkmair the Elder was a German painter and woodcut printmaker. In 1488 he became a pupil of Martin Schongauer in Colmar, and from 1491 he worked in Augsburg, where he earned a reputation as a master and opened his own workshop in 1498. He was an important innovator of the chiaroscuro woodcut and seems to have been the first to use a tone block. He was also a successful painter, mainly of religious scene and portraits of Augsburg citizens and members of the Holy Roman Emperor's court. Many examples of his work are kept in the galleries of Munich and Vienna.

Proofs are very rare Erläuterungen / Comments Im Rahmen seiner Prachtwerke in Holzschnitt gab Kaiser Maximilian I. auch die "Weisskunig"-Folge in Auftrag, die seine eigene Geschichte und die seiner Vorfahren illustrieren sollte. Den Text schrieb Marx Treitzsauerwein. Der "Weisskunig" war als Ergänzung zum "Theuerdank" gedacht und sollte primär das politische Leben des Kaisers darstellen. Die Personen sind historisch getreu geschildert, Friedrich III. ist der alte, Maximilian I. der junge Weisskunig. Nach Maximilians Tod 1515 blieb die Arbeit als Fragment liegen. Im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden auf Schloss Graz 236 Holzstöcke gefunden und 1775 in Wien erstmals publiziert. As part of his magnificent works in woodcut, Emperor Maximilian I also commissioned the "Weisskunig" series, which was intended to illustrate his own history as well as the the one of his ancestors. The text was written by Marx Treitzsauerwein. The "Weisskunig" was intended as a supplement to the "Theuerdank" and was primarily meant to depict the emperor's political life. The characters are portrayed in a historically accurate manner; Frederick III is the old Weisskunig, Maximilian I the young one. After Maximilian's death in 1515, the work remained a fragment. In the course of the 18th century, 236 wooden blocks were found at Graz Castle and published for the first time in Vienna in 1775. Burgkmair's woodcut was first used by Ratdolt in 1502 for the missal for the diocese of Freising and is often described in the literature as his most beautiful canon woodcut. Triumphzug Kaiser Maximilians I. 23 Holzschnitt-Tafeln von verschied. Künstlern, bei Schmidt für Edwards in Wien und London, 1796. Je ca. 38 x 39 cm (Blattgröße). (72) - Dodgson II, 97, 3: "Bartsch's edition". - Vorhanden sind folgende Blätter: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 27, 41, 43, 47, 49, 50, 62, 65, 67, 70, 74, 75, 82, 87, 89 und 91-93 (Nummerierung in den Stöcken oben rechts). - Der Triumphzug besteht aus insgesamt 147 Holzschnitten. An der Serie aus Einzelblättern waren neben Burgkmair, der 67 Holzstöcke schuf, viele Künstler beteiligt, darunter Albrecht Altdorfer, Leonhard Beck, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Schäufelin und Hans Springinklee, die sich im Großen und Ganzen an die Miniaturvorlagen von Jörg Kölderer zu halten hatten. Beim Tod Maximilians im Jahr 1519 war die Serie noch nicht fertiggestellt und wurde beiseite gelegt, erst im Jahr 1526 entstand im Auftrag seines Enkels, Erzherzog Ferdinand, ein erster Abdruck der Holzstöcke. - Die vorliegenden Blätter wurden von den Originalstöcken gedruckt, die in der Wiener Hofbibliothek aufgefunden worden waren, von A. Bartsch veranlasst und überwacht. - Der Triumphzug ist das vierte große Holzschnittwerk, das die Taten Kaiser Maximilians verherrlicht. Von besonderer kulturhistorischer Bedeutung ist die getreue Darstellung der Kostüme, Rüstungen, Waffen und Musikinstrumente.
