Sakti BURMAN (b. 1935) Acrobat Oil on canvas 33 x 41 cm Signed lower right SAKTI BURMAN Contre signed and titled on back, 1327 Label on back Galleria nuovo sagittario, Milano, dated 1973 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the artist. Provenance: Private collection, France Sale Casa d'Aste Pandolfini June 19, 2024, no. 79 Galleria nuovo sagittario, Milan Resale rights will be charged to the buyer. Sakti Burman's spirit is one of poetic, inner meditation, harmonies of sound, dreams and reflections. The result is an image full of color, fantasy, fragmented patterns and narratives, and, at the same time, an invitation to a discreet, silent and joyful contemplation of reality." Luc Calvero, Sakti Burman, Paris, 1984. In this marbled, dreamlike composition, Sakti Burman conjures up a world suspended between dream and reality: the acrobat, balancing on a toy horse, seems to float in a fairytale world, populated by female figures and enchanted landscapes, where memory and childhood intertwine in a poetic fresco.

Sakti BURMAN (b. 1935) The Enchanted Garden

    Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Sakti BURMAN (b. 1935) The Enchanted Garden Acrylic on canvas 60 x 74 cm Signed middle right Sakti Burman Titled on back of stretcher Provenance: French private collection. I don't paint dreams, I paint in a dream", said Sakti Burman, and this work seems to embody this inner journey. In The Enchanted Garden, Sakti Burman composes a dreamlike scene on the border between myth and dream. A naked, blue female figure stands in the center, staring, almost transfixed. Her flesh seems to merge with the bark of the world: scattered with floral or organic motifs, she appears to emerge from the material. Around her, other ambiguous figures - statues topped with flowers, beings with pale faces and bluish bodies - seem to evolve in a suspended space, half-theatrical, half-sacred. The almost choral presence of red in the background frames the scene like a dramatic curtain.

"If lithography was a means of subsistence for Burman in his early years, it was never for him 'alienated labor', in the Marxist sense of repetitive, exploitative, survival-oriented toil, and therefore detached from all subjectivity. On the contrary, printmaking [...] is for him a laboratory, not of the finished work, but of the work in the making." Ranjit Hoskote, In the Presence of Another Sky. Sakti BURMAN (b. 1935) Untitled Mixed media, watercolor and pencil on paper 64.5 x 49.5 cm Signed lower right Sakti Burman With the finesse of an illuminator and the freedom of a storyteller, Sakti Burman presents a translucent dove, a monumental figure of peace, charged with faces and floating memories. Beside it, a face with a fixed gaze emerges. The background is reduced to a few sketched architectural volumes. On the edge of the visible and the dream, this suspended vision evokes the inner journey, in a faded landscape where memory settles in light layers. Provenance: Collection of Madame D. Barbier, acquired from the artist in the 1990s. Barbier, acquired from the artist in the 1990's. Exhibition: Pundole Art Gallery, Bombay, 2001, reproduced in catalog pl. 45. The catalog will be sent to the purchaser. A sensation from the outside world suddenly reaches me and overwhelms me. My emotions become so intense that I need to give them a form in order to free myself. For me, a painting is an explanation I owe myself. Silence and meditation have opened up a world where nothing is impossible. A vital force suddenly takes hold of me and compels me to express myself, to define what I see. Then comes the joy of work, the pleasure of handling the colors that fascinate me. My love of life is only fully realized when I transpose it onto canvas. It's an intense joy" (Artist's statement, "Indian Painters in Paris", Lalit Kala Contemporary 4, New Delhi, 1966, p. 12) Reflection of Memory belongs to a period of full maturity for the artist, when his plastic language is fully asserted: diaphanous figures, evanescent atmospheres, pastel palettes nuanced with marbled textures, obtained through his fresco-inspired transfer technique. Around a central mirror where two faces merge, the artist orchestrates a saturated theater of the intimate, where centaurs and musicians emerge, where everyday objects become symbols. Here, he combines influences from India, Renaissance Italy and the medieval Western imagination, in a visual grammar of his own, where the marvelous always emerges from the familiar. Born in Calcutta in 1935, Sakti Burman studied at the Government College of Art and Craft before obtaining a French government scholarship that enabled him to continue his training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he settled permanently from the 1960s. Although deeply rooted in the European artistic context, his work remains permeated by the resonances of his Indian heritage. During a trip to Italy in 1958, the discovery of the frescoes of Giotto, Piero della Francesca and Simone Martini marked a turning point in his practice. He drew inspiration from them to develop a singular technique combining marbling and pointillism, giving his canvases the appearance of ancient frescoes, as if sculpted in memory. His immediately recognizable pictorial universe blends Hindu mythologies and Italian Renaissance references, childhood memories and familiar figures, creating a dreamlike world populated by harlequins, divinities, musicians and fabulous animals. His richly symbolic compositions often take the form of windows opening onto the imaginary. Described as an "alchemist of dreams", Sakti Burman's work is suspended between myth and reality, celebration and meditation, East and West. His paintings, both poetic and spiritual, weave a dialogue between cultures, nourished as much by the Buddhist caves of Ajantâ as by European Baroque allegories. Since his first solo exhibition in Calcutta in 1954, he has exhibited in the greatest artistic capitals - Paris, London, Milan, Zurich, New York, Mumbai - and has been the subject of numerous retrospectives. Today, he is recognized as one of the leading artists on the modern Indo-French scene.

Sakti BURMAN (b. 1935) BURMAN (Sakti)& TAGORE (Rabindranath)& GIDE (André). L'Offrande lyrique. Choix de poèmes traduits de l'anglais par André Gide. sl, Les Pharmaciens Bibliophiles, 1993. 96 pp. folio in embossed, filled folder and blue velvet slipcase. 15 color lithographs, 5 on double page, by Burman. Edition of 190 numbered copies on Rives vellum, nominative copy no. 100, signed by the artist on the colophon, enriched with an edition numbered 3/80 and signed (reserved for members), proofs of the text corrected for bon à tirer and a suite of 17 plates signed and numbered (3/45). Provenance: Collection of Madame D. Barbier, friend of the artist, member of the Pharmaciens bibliophiles, and co-editor of the book Bibliography: R. Hoskote, In the Presence of Another Sky, The Confluential Art of Sakti Burman, Mumbai, 2017, pp. 88, 89, 91-97 (reproduced). "As I write these lines, I am reminded of the sumptuous suite of lithographs that Burman produced for an exceptional limited edition of L'Offrande lyrique, Tagore's Gitanjali, in the limpid translation by the legendary French writer André Gide (1869-1951), a contemporary of Gurudev and himself a Nobel Prize winner. Published by Editions Gallimard in October 1993, this work is the pinnacle of Burman's career, one of his most accomplished and extraordinary works. Ranjit Hoskote, In the Presence of Another Sky. The Confluential Art of Sakti Burman, Mumbai, 2017, pp. 82-83. This rare and sensitive set was born of an encounter, that of Dominique Barbier, a passionate bibliophile, with Sakti Burman, around the edition of Tagore's L'Offrande lyrique (Gitanjali), illustrated by the artist and published in 1993 by Les Pharmaciens Bibliophiles. A sincere friendship quickly developed between the artist, his wife Maïté Delteil and the Barbier couple, based on mutual respect, aesthetic connivances and joint projects. It was in this context of esteem and exchange that Dominique Barbier acquired his masterwork Reflection of Memory (1988) directly from Burman in his studio, and lent it on several occasions for exhibitions at the artist's request. This emblematic canvas brings together the painter's most distinctive features: a fresco-inspired technique, a marbled, dreamlike atmosphere, diaphanous figures borrowed from the world of fairy tales, myths and childhood memories. This friendship is not limited to Sakti Burman. Maïté Delteil, the artist's wife and accomplished painter, is a natural addition to the Barbier Collection. A precise draughtswoman trained at the most prestigious institutions (Beaux-Arts, Académie Julian, Casa Velázquez), Maïté Delteil captures the discreet beauty of simple things. Her perfectly silhouetted trees and graceful birds reflect the same quest for poetry in reality - a vision that is complementary, subtle and profoundly humanistic. What struck and moved me was the communion and sharing between religions and cultures visible in their works and lives", says Dominique Barbier.
