Artist's label with his signature, title, dedication and other work data in ink on the reverse. This is the largest print ever produced by René Burri. The exhibition UTOPIA, conceived by Hans-Michael Koetzle and René Burri, was dedicated to the photographer's engagement with significant architectural projects from the 1950s to the 1970s. Burri's focus was on architecture within its social and cultural context. The Hacienda San Cristobal in Ciudad López Mateos, Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico City, was built from 1967 onwards according to the plans of Luis Barragán and Andrés Casillas de Alba. Burri's masterful work fascinates with its interplay of light, shadow, space, and empty space. The print offered here is the largest work in Burri's oeuvre. Burri photographed the round window of a café at the Cologne Cathedral, which is overlapped by a (somewhat battered) sculptural nude figure on the façade. Inside, café guests watch the goings-on in the street. The boy's Turkish-style costume and the eye-catching brooch on the man's lapel suggest that the photo was taken during carnival. The combination of contradictory pictorial elements, which the photographer combined at the right moment, shows the influence of Magnum's founding generation on the 27-year-old René Burri, who had become a member of the renowned agency the year before. Under the influence of Robert Frank's legendary project "The Americans" (1958), the Swiss artist René Burri spent many years analysing society in divided Germany. He first published "Die Deutschen" in 1962, followed by further editions. Gelatin silver print, 1963, approx. 30 x 40 cm, signed dedication and dated by photographer in 2010 recto (See image of the consigner w. Burri), and annot. from unknown hand in pen verso. Tipped-in under passe-partout. Condition shows wear, but the provenance is outstanding.* *The photograph was acquired by the consignor in February 2010 in Havana, Cuba. The seller, a collector, claimed it was the original print delivered by Magnum photographer René Burri to the Ministry of Industry in 1963, during the time Ché Guevara served as minister from 1961 to 1965. Upon returning to the Netherlands, the consignor coincidentally discovered that Kunsthal Rotterdam was hosting the exhibition "René Burri - Retrospectief" from 16 April to 22 August 2010. At the opening, René Burri autographed the print with a dedication: "Für Lion, Rotterdam, 16/4/10." He verified the print's provenance and remarked, "I envy you for this treasure," noting that he possessed only two vintage prints in his personal collection. While Burri's iconic portrait of Ché Guevara is frequently sold, it is usually as later digital prints, rarely as an original first print from 1963 such as this one.

René Burri did not know that he was photographing one of the characters who would become one of the most iconic martyrs of the 20th century. It shows Che Guevara smoking a Havana cigar, in an attitude that reveals a strong personality. The Swiss photographer would say of that moment: "Che's proud face is actually one of anger. I was in his office in Cuba, sent by 'Magnum' and he was fighting with an American journalist who had traveled with me. He looked like a caged tiger and didn't even notice me, so I was able to take all the photos I wanted!". The image, which would become one of Che's most iconic, was taken in the office of the then Cuban Minister of Industry. René Burri was a Swiss photographer and filmmaker. He studied at the "Zurich School of Decorative Arts" (1950-1953), where he learned to compose with light and to consider light in relation to shadows. The "Burri touch" was born from these classes, which shaped his look: the refined elegance of a composition, the subtle, open and meaningful play of the solid lines of an image. He ascribes to the "humanist photography" dominant in Paris in the fifties and there he photographs special and delicate moments, in the style of Izis and Doisneau. However, taking Cartier-Bresson as a model, Burri began to search for documentary photographs that were denser than the reflection of simple anecdotes. As Ernest Hininger's camera assistant, he also began to shoot small documentaries. In 1955 he joined the Magnum Agency and began to travel around the world, shooting portraits, landscapes, political and social reportage, architecture and industry photography, etc. In 1982 he opened the Magnum Gallery in Paris, together with Bruno Barbey. Since 1988 he has been artistic director of the magazine Schweizer Illustrierten. Among his most famous photographs are a photo of the city of São Paulo (Brazil) and a photo of Che Guevara.
