Clay Wilson, old friend and collaborator, William S. Burroughs, March 15, 1995”. Wilson’s work was notorious for its confrontational style, combining explicit violence, sexual imagery, and grotesque satire, pushing the boundaries of what comics could depict and helping to establish the raw aesthetic associated with underground comix.     William S. Burroughs (American, 1914-1997) Going Away - Where?, 1990 Mixed media painting with collage on paper 23" x 17 3/4" The title Going Away - Where? is taken from an excerpt from Joseph Conrad's novel Under Western Eyes (1911), a major influence on William S. Burroughs as an author. The scene, Councillor Mikulin's interview of Razumov, directly inspired an entire chapter in Burrough's seminal Beat Generation text Naked Lunch (1959). Burroughs' character Doctor Benway has been identified as having strong similarities to the Councillor Mikulin, and indeed Burroughs praised Mikulin: "He has the... trick of leaving a sentence unfinished or conveying something without moving or just with the flicker of an eyelid." [Michael Stevens, The Road to Interzone, 2022] This mixed media work was acquired by the present owner from William S. Burroughs himself in 1990, selected among the Burroughs' available works in the artist's Lawrence, KS house, identified by Burroughs and writer James Grauerholz as being particularly "suitable" -- and among Burroughs' finer pieces. The present owner appeared with Burroughs in the Ministry music video Just One Fix (1992). Spray paint, acrylic, and airbrush on paper, with a collaged monotype in the upper right corner. Signed to the bottom edge, titled and dated to the reverse, with a description of the history of the piece on a page affixed to the frame. The glazed frame measures 30 1/2" x 25".

First edition, two paperback pulp novels (with an abridged version of Maurice Helbrant's Narcotic Agent) bound back-to-back with lurid covers printed in color, a very nice example, published under Burroughs's pen name William Lee; with some very slight surface wear, and minor superficial creases, nicely preserved, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. Originally titled "Junk", Ace Books renamed the work "Junkie" without consulting Burroughs or his agent at the time, Allen Ginsberg, to avoid associating the work with any notions of poor-quality writing and added the subtitle "Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict." Burroughs himself was reliant on opium throughout its conception, though he refers to his drug use in the past tense as he had quit using heroine and other substances preceding its publication. At the time, he did not believe opium to be an addictive narcotic. Ace Books also decided to bind Junkie back-to-back with Helbrant's Narcotic Agent, without consulting Burroughs, which he deemed, "an appalling idea," for obvious reasons.

    BURROUGHS, WILLIAM. 1914-1997. A 1930s Underwood Standard Typewriter no 5 owned by William Burroughs and recovered from his apartment at 210 Centre St, New York, cast iron frame, well used and dusty from storage, the ribbon broken but keys and other devices working smoothly.Provenance David Prentice (from William Burroughs's apartment cleared out in April/May 1966).WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS'S VINTAGE UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER. David Prentice took two typewriters out of the Centre Street apartment, and returned the more modern one to Burroughs in 1975 when he took up residence again in New York City. Ironically, Burroughs was not a very efficient typist, and got Kerouac to type out Naked Lunch on a different Underwood typewriter, a portable displayed at the Pompidou in 2016.

A brown plastic faux leather suitcase with 3 catches and two locks (without keys), well-traveled with some waterstains and markings through use, inside a small brass American key, presumably his spare key for his 210 Center Street apartment, and a baggage label written in Burroughs's hand recording his journey on the Independence (American Export Isbrandtsen Lines), from Algeciras (Spain) to New York, sailing date Nov 30th 1964; as well as two baggage tags numbered 39 and 60 on the handle of the case;2. a woven Moroccan beach basket, one handle badly worn, with the same baggage tag, cabin 202 for the voyage of the Independence back to the States, Nov 30 1964, and the baggage tags 39 and 60, worn and dust soiled; and a floral crimson tasseled bedspread, with dry-cleaning label, also used on his bed in Center St.WITH: TLS from Burroughs to Prentice, 1 p, dated "April 4, 1966, Hotel Rushmore, 11 Trebovir Road, London S.W.5," with envelope franked 6 APR 1966, discussing a sublet of his apartment on Centre Street, going on to say that the only people he would want living with his things would be "You [David] or David Budd ... alternatively could you store the effects in your apartment ... I own the bed, the desk, the three heavy wood chairs and cooking utensils ... I am anxious to give up the apartment definitively." On Burroughs's return to NYC, in 1974, he took back his steamer trunk with all his manuscripts and paperwork for the Third Mind, and a more modern typewriter, but the rest were gifted to David, and remained in store until now.Provenance: David Prentice.
