(b Toronto, Ontario, 1909 – 1977) Canadian Abstract Expressionist. In the 1930s Jack Hamilton Bush attended the Ontario College of Art. He is associated with Painters Eleven, a group of Canadian Abstract Expressionists based in Toronto and influenced by art critic Clement Greenberg. It was on the strength of a 1968 Guggenheim Fellowship and a two-year appointment as visiting artist at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, that Bush thought the time had come for him to retire from his employment as a commercial designer and devote himself to painting full time. In the early 1970s, Bush began to apply his acrylic paints on wet canvas, using broad brush-strokes, sponges and paint rollers, creating a textured surface that provided a sharp contrast between the ground and the overlying strong calligraphic forms he superimposed in lively, opaque colors.* By the time he was 59 years old, Bush had shown his works in well-received solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries in major art centres including New York, San Francisco, London and Paris as well as in Toronto and Montreal. His paintings were to be seen hanging side-by-side with those of prominent practitioners of the Abstract Expressionist movement, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland. Nonetheless, his first solo show in a major institution took place at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1972; and his first touring Canadian retrospective was organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario only in 1976. Bush died a few weeks after attending the opening of that exhibition when it traveled to the Edmonton Art Gallery in January of 1977.* (Credit: Heffel, Vancouver, Fall 2008 Live Auction, November 19, 2008 Lot 35.)

Brunk AuctionsMid-century modern figure painting, oil on board, signed and dated '54 lower right. An early painting of Jack Hamilton Bush's. The artist was born in Toronto and raised in Montreal. After finishing high school, he became an apprentice in the Art Department of the Rapid Grip Company in Montreal. By 1950, Bush was experimenting with abstraction and was exhibiting in various group shows. In 1952 he visited New York, mainly to see first-hand some of the works that were being produced there and which he had only seen in reproduction. That same year, he participated in the show "First Canadian Art Abstract Exhibition" in Oshawa, which led to his involvement in 'Painters Eleven'. By 1955, his work had become completely abstract and showed the influence of Abstract Expressionism. In 1957, the influential American art critic Clement Greenberg visited Bush in Toronto, advising him to shed the influence of Abstract Expressionism, to simplify his art and move in a new direction. Bush followed the advice, and by the mid-60s experimented with Color-Field painting, usually producing large-scale oils. Overall Size: 30 x 26 in Sight Size: 23 x 19 in

VALLEY IN WINTER (HOGG'S HOLLOW), 1948 gouache on board signed 18.5 ins x 25 ins; 47 cms x 63.5 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Ontario Exhibited: New Paintings By Jack Bush, Gavin Henderson Galleries, Toronto, 17-29 October 1949, no. 29. Throughout his fine art career, amid international acclaim, Jack Bush remained a painter dedicated to Toronto. During his early landscape painting days, Toronto provided a variety of subject matters for inspiration. In 1948, Bush was raising a family of three boys with his wife Mabel. They lived on Eastview Crescent, which lies between Yonge Boulevard and York Mills Road, just west of Yonge Street. To the east, the view was Hoggs Hollow – a largely rural stretch of rolling hills and farms back then, but accessible by an electric railway that traveled along Yonge Street, which bordered this once bucolic place. Valley in Winter is a painting that captures a fascinating moment in Toronto’s history – a transition, or pivot point, between rural and urban. The rolling hills and tufts of forest are carved through with a scatter of houses, a long and winding road and, most prominently, tall utility poles. The utility poles bear an uncanny resemblance to crucifixes in the landscape. Bush was an Anglican but 1948 marked a time of emotional and spiritual struggle for the artist. Evidence of this pivotal time in his life came through boldly and bravely in a solo exhibition of “New Paintings” held at the Gavin Henderson Galleries at 759 Yonge Street in the fall of 1949. The gallery billed the paintings as “provocative” and Valley in Winter was included among other paintings, such as Floating Spirit and Struggling Spirit, both of which are now in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario. These two paintings also date to 1948 and are notably abstract, with no discernible human features or objects. Between landscapes and forays into abstraction, 1948 represents a critical moment in the career of Jack Bush where his worlds were colliding. As Pearl McCarthy noted when she reviewed his 1949 show, the work represented a “period of intensive, personal work,” resulting in his paintings reaching a higher level than anything he had produced previously. 1 Another critic, Rose MacDonald, praised the paintings for their “powerfully impactive character.” 2 We thank Sarah Stanners, art historian, curator, and Director of the Jack Bush Catalogue Raisonné for contributing this essay. 1Pearl McCarthy, “Pictures by Jack Bush Typify Deeper Trends,” The Globe and Mail (15 October 1949), p. 9. 2Rose MacDonald, “Donges Landscapes at Little Gallery,” Toronto Telegram (15 October 1949).
