Provenance: Cincinnati Art Galleries, Cincinnati, Ohio (label, verso); Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, NY - 2005; A Private New Jersey Estate. Norton Bush was born in 1834 in Rochester NY, where he studies painting with local artist James Harris. He moved to New York City at the age of sixteen and continued to study art, working under artist Jasper Gropsey. Bush heard of the artistic fervor in South America and journeyed to California by way of Vanderbilt's Route through Nicaragua. Eventually relocating to San Francisco permanently, Bush visited South America on two other occasions. The paintings he produced during his travels established him as California's premier painter of the Tropics.

An original oil painting by the late Norton Bush (American, 1834-1894), a landscape painter who drew his greatest success from his luministic South American tropicals. This example, entitled "Tropical Landscape" depicts a hazy waterscape with two-passenger boat, framed by lush tropical vegetation. Signed lower right by the artist with date slightly obscured, appears to be 1870s. Housed in an ornate gold-toned frame with some separation as shown, gallery label affixed en verso. Measures approximately 27.5" x 3.5" x 21.5" overall with 20" x 14" canvas.
