Bussy' l.r., oil on canvas (46 x 33cm; framed 61.5 x 48.5cm) Provenance: Previously held in the collection of the charity Paintings in Hospitals; Bonhams, London, 15 November 2011, lot 391, sold as Simon Bussy (French, 1870-1954). Footnote: Jane Simone Bussy (1906-1960) was a French painter best known for her still lifes of flowers and fruit. The daughter of the artist Simon Bussy and Dorothy Strachey, and niece of the writer Lytton Strachey, she was closely connected to the Bloomsbury circle. Her work is characterised by its delicate palette, careful observation and quiet decorative charm. We are grateful to Philippe Loisel for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this work. Condition Report: Minor undulations to canvas. Stretcher marks to left edge. There is a small group of tiny losses to the blue paint in the upper left quarter. Light craquelure starting to emerge in places. The paint is starting to lift slightly along the right side with the potential for flaking. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

'Janie Bussy was born and brought up in France, but spent time every year at Charleston and exhibited her still life paintings at the Lefevre Gallery in London. Jane Simone Bussy was born in England on March 6, 1906. During her life time she was a landscape and still-life painter.
