Rene Buthaud (French, 1886-1986), glazed terracotta sculpture, circa 1955. The composition features a stylized female mermaid figure integrated with a ram motif, arranged around a circular arc element in a surreal and modernist manner. Finished in a rich palette of blue, green, yellow, and earthy brown glazes, the sculpture is mounted on an integral rectangular base. While unsigned, the work is sold as attributed to Rene Buthaud. Many of his best-known pieces are painted with supine female nudes. Work by Buthaud can be found in the collections of the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
