    Lyman Byxbe (Colorado, 1886-1980) Untitled (Aspen in the Rockies) Mid 20th Century The scarce and finely rendered oil on canvas is signed lower left. Lyman Byxbe is primarily known as a printmaker, a very prolific printmaker attributed with creating nearly 400 images. The few oils he created seem to have come mostly in the 1950s. While there is no title or other information to work from, there is circumstantial evidence to suggest that the grove of autumn aspens in the foreground of this composition is framing the Flatirons near Boulder, Colorado, possibly the broad summit below Longs Peak rising in the background, a favorite subject of the artist. His prints many times pictured views and landmarks such as Long's Peak, Bear Lake, and other views and landmarks of the surrounding Front Range. Whatever the location, this is the finest example of Byxbe's work to ever be offered at auction. Canvas measures 26 x 36 with a framed size of 32 x 42 inches. It is pictured as number 345 in The Prints of Lyman Byxbe (1886-1980): A Catalog Raisonne by Robert L. Crump. Crump states Done for a Chicago Society of etchers show at the Library of Congress. Coyt Hackett watched Byxbe print the edition and after number 27… ''Print 28 showed sufficient degrading of the drypoint so that Byx terminated the edition and destroyed number 28.'' According to all four major art auction record databases and entries on the major online bidding platforms it has never been up for bid. This fine and clean example has been archivally matted and framed in a high quality ripple molding frame. An Omaha chief named Blackbird is described as being a visionary leader who was among the first to trade with Europeans. He strategically leveraged these relationships to elevate the Omaha's status, making them one of the most powerful tribes in the region. The site of his grave overlooking the Missouri river, Blackbird Hill, was visited by Lewis and Clark in 1804 where they planted a flag in his honor.
