    Walter Cade III b. 1936 Horn Player 1970-1980 ink resist on paper mounted to board 16 x 20-1/2 inches signed Cade III initially painted this work with gouache (or tempera) and then washed over various sections with inks to create a unique finish. The ink seeps into the crevices of the brushwork and stains the paper that is exposed. The excess that is left sitting on top of the paint is wiped off. The result is an even, smooth surface, with rich coloration.

Frame measures 31 inches high, 49.5 inches wide. In good condition. Walter M. Cade III was born in New York City in 1936. He is an American artist who is best known for his work in the field of printmaking. Cade studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his MFA in printmaking. Cade's work often explores themes of nature and the environment, and he has been particularly interested in the landscapes and wildlife of his native Pennsylvania. He is known for his use of traditional printmaking techniques, such as etching and aquatint, as well as more experimental methods, such as digital printing and collage. Throughout his career, Cade has exhibited his work widely, including at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the National Academy of Design. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Library of Congress, the British Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In addition to his artistic career, Cade has also been involved in art education. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among other institutions. He has also served as a juror for numerous exhibitions and competitions, and has written and lectured extensively on the subject of printmaking.

    WALTER M. CADE III (1936 - ) New York. Mixed-media collage, 1981. 965x1219 mm; 38x48 inches. Signed and dated "Aug 81" in pencil, lower right recto. Signed, dated and inscribed "Created expressley for - Helen L. Ritter + Richard S. Ritter M.D." in ink, lower left on the frame back. Provenance: private collection, California. This is an impressively large and complex collage by a New York City artist known for his depiction of urban environments. Early in his career, Walter Cade was included in two important exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the 1969 Annual Exhibition: Contemporary American Painting and the 1971 Contemporary Black Artists in America. He then had the inaugural show at the Studio Gallery in Jamaica, NY, with a solo exhibition in 1972. Cade continued this window imagery with mixed media, and had three solo exhibitions at Sande Webster Gallery in Philadelphia.
