    Ippolito Caffi, 1809 Belluno – 1866 Lissa

    Est: €25,000 - €35,000

ROM – PIAZZA ROTONDA MIT DEM PANTHEON Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 37 x 47,5 cm. Links unten signiert. A.R. Est: €15,000 - €16,000

Tempera on cardboard. Dimensions: 67 x 90 cm. An interesting composition of Romantic character attributed to the Italian painter Ippolito Caffi, renowned for his refined vedute and nocturnal scenes with great sensitivity to light. The work depicts a nocturnal duel illuminated by moonlight, developing a dramatic and evocative atmosphere through a delicate treatment of light and the contrasts between shadows and reflections. The scene stands out for its careful spatial construction and the narrative capacity characteristic of 19th-century Italian painting, in which the landscape and setting acquire an essential role within the composition. The use of tempera on cardboard lends a soft texture and a special chromatic subtlety, reinforcing the intimate and theatrical character of the representation. MR 5680; p. 148 n. 49, collezione privata) e nella monografia curata da Ferdinando Peretti (Ferdinando Peretti, "Ippolito Caffi 1809-1866", Roma, 2016, p. 84 nn. 45-46, entrambi collezione privata; p. 85 nn. 47-48, entrambi collezione privata, p. 86, n. 49, Venezia, Ca’ Pesaro; p. 87, nn. 51-52, entrambi collezione privata; p. 88, nn. 53-54, entrambi collezione privata). (Belluno 1809–1866 Lissa) Venice, Molo with a view of the Riva degli Schiavoni with the Palazzo Ducale and the columns of San Marco and San Todaro, signed Caffi, oil on canvas, 47.5 x 60 cm, framed Provenance: Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner; Private Collection, Italy. Ippolito Caffi was born in Belluno, but spent most of his life travelling throughout Italy and further afield to Egypt, Turkey and Greece. In 1832, when he was still a young man, he moved to Rome, where he quickly became successful as a vedutista. There, he painted the celebrated piazze and monuments of the Eternal City. In 1835, he published his treatise on perspective, "Lezione di prospettiva pratica", showcasing his mastery of both the theory and practice of spatial construction. Building upon the tradition established by Canaletto, Caffi modernised the genre of vedute. Throughout his career, he frequently travelled between Rome and Venice, where the present work was created. The composition captures the charm and atmospheric character of Venice. The scene opens onto the Molo and the entrance to the Piazzetta San Marco. To the left is the Doge’s Palace, which guides the viewer’s gaze along the broad promenade of the Riva degli Schiavoni, one of the city’s most recognisable areas. In the centre stand the two famous columns: the Column of San Marco, topped by the winged lion, and the Column of San Todaro. More than just a visual record of this important site, Caffi captures the vitality of Venetian life. The elongated shadows in the foreground suggest a late afternoon setting, and figures of Venetians strolling along the Riva bring the scene to life. Caffi’s paintings introduced a new approach to the tradition of vedute painting. His interest in the effects of light and atmosphere is immediately visible in the present painting.

Ippolito Caffi, The Piazza della Borsa - the Stock Exchange Square – in Trieste at Night

    Est: €70,000 - €90,000

Signed lower left on the the horse-drawn carriage CAFFI Ippolito Caffi began his artistic career in Padua and then attended the Academy in Venice from 1827 to 1829, where he won a prize in perspective painting in 1830. In search of new horizons, he moved to Rome that year and lived there until 1843. He spent the remaining time of his life in various cities and countries, where he painted successfully and gained recognition, but was also politically active, which led to his exile, imprisonment and ultimately his death in the Battle of Lissa in 1866. Initially, Caffi was influenced by the Venetian veduta painters of the 18th century, but he soon explored new avenues. He was interested in atmospheric elements, light and weather phenomena – phenomena that stand out so clearly in this nocturnal cityscape with its gas-lit streets and shops and the moonlight that the long-standing attribution to Leo von Klenze, the intellectual architect from Munich, is rather surprising. In 1839-40, Caffi is documented in Trieste, where he received several prestigious commissions. These include two views of the Piazza della Borsa, the stock exchange square, both of which were commissioned by important collectors of the time. The first was created in 1839 for Prospero Fontana, the second, in moonlight, for Cristo Ranieri. This painting was shown at the first exhibition of the Società di Belle Arti in 1840 and is listed as No. 100 in the accompanying catalogue. Neither of the two stock exchange paintings is reproduced as a photograph in these early catalogues. The latter is likely to be the painting shown here. This painting, presented to the public for the first time, is an important discovery and a wonderful addition to the œuvre of this significant 19th-century Italian painter.

Ippolito Caffi, Bedouins outside the Gates of Jerusalem

    Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Signed lower left: Caffi Born in Belluno, Ippolito moved to Padua and then to Venice at a young age, where he entered the Accademia before later moving to Rome. In 1843, Caffi undertook a journey to the East - visiting Greece, Egypt, Tukey, Syria, Armenia, and Palestine - which he documented in many sketches and vedutas. The present work is an example of Caffi's pictorial mastery in capturing episodes, environments and landscapes, rendering them with an unusual understanding of light and immediacy, which anticipates Impressionism.

(Belluno 1809–1866 Lissa) Venice, a Nocturnal Festival on Via Eugenia, signed, dated Caffi 1858, oil on canvas, 50 x 77 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. Given the widespread appeal of the subject, Caffi revisited this composition on multiple occasions. Three other versions are held in public collections, namely at the Ca’ Pesaro Museum of Modern Art, the Civic Museum of Belluno, and the Revoltella Museum in Trieste. Another variant was sold at Dorotheum in 2016. Admitted to the Venice Academy at a very young age in 1827, Caffi soon distinguished himself as a gifted landscape painter. Though he resided in Rome from 1832 to 1848, he frequently returned to Venice, capturing the city in luminous hues and ever-shifting light. His vedute often depict the city enlivened by vibrant festivities, where banners, natural and artificial lights, and the interplay of brilliance against nocturnal shadows create striking the chromatic effects Caffi is known for. As seen in the present work, the moonlight illuminates the lagoon and the boats resting upon the water as well as some architectural elements all throughout the painting. Groups of figures gather around a fire, drawn to its warm glow, mirroring a similar scene further down the street. These light sources, rich in warm tones, highlight the façades of the buildings, contrasting with the cooler reflections cast by the lagoon. This painting exemplifies Caffi’s remarkable ability to conjure atmospheric effects on canvas — a skill that earned him enduring acclaim. The fusion of poetic beauty and enigmatic allure is particularly evident in his depiction of the nocturnal festival on what was then Via Eugenia, now known as Via Garibaldi.

REGATTA AUF DEM CANAL GRANDE Öl auf Leinwand. 61,5 x 78,5 cm. A.R. Literatur: Vgl. NÄCHTLICHER KARNEVAL IN ROM Öl auf Leinwand. 68 x 93 cm. Rechts unten signiert auf einer Treppenstufe. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Annalisa Scarpa, vom 26. Februar 2020, in Kopie. In seinem Brief an Antonio Tessari vom 14. The Museo di Roma houses a painting by Ippolito Caffi (1809 - 1866), inv. no. MR 947, which shows the same view, also at sunrise, which was painted after 1843. It is possible that the painting served as a model for this micromosaic. The finely moulded ormolu frame is adorned with a round medallion bearing the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, who was appointed to his office in 1846. The excellent quality of the work, the meaningful choice of view and the atmospheric and detailed finish suggest that this panel was a gift from the pope.

ATTRIBUITO A CAFFI. VEDUTA PALUSTRE CON BARCA E CASA.

    Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Ippolito Caffi [Attribuito a]. Veduta palustre con barca e casa. Olio su cartoncino intelato e verniciata. Pittura monocromatica. 117x160 mm. Firma poco leggibile in basso a destra. Numerato 620.
