An extraordinary pair of 17th-century still-life paintings, each attributed to the masterful Italian Baroque painter Margherita Cafei. Known for her specialization in eloral compositions, Cafei's style is characterized by its dynamic energy and dramatic light. The present work epitomizes Margherita Caffi typical production: emerging from a dark background, the flamboyant flower arrangements are displayed in asymmetric groups, enhancing the vivid composition with a dynamic movement. A comparable still life by the same hand appeared on the French art market in 2016 (Paris, 31st March 2016, lot 86): the two canvases are comparable for the partition of the flowers in three groups, for the chromatic contrapunto and for the prominence of the roses in the foreground. Born in Milan, within the of Voló family, a dynasty of still life painters, Margherita later married Francesco Caffi, a Cremonese artist also specialized in flower compositions. She became a internationally prominent painter, obtaining commission from the Medici as well as working for the Spanish and Austrian Courts, Unlike many of her contemporaries, Caffi does not seem to show a scientific interest and focused on decorative and ornamental aspects.

MARGARITA CAFFI Milan 1648 - 1710 Pair of still lifes with flowers Oil on canvas Signed Measures 79.5 x 112 cm each The painter Margherita Caffi began her apprenticeship at the hands of her father, also the flower painter Vincenzo Volò, better known as “Vincenzino de'fiori”. His younger sisters Francesca and Giovanna Vincenzina were also flower painters. In 1667 she married Ludovico Caffi in Milan, from whom she took her last name. The couple settled in Cremona, but in 1670 they were forced to move to Piacenza when her husband and brother-in-law were involved in a murder. Her extensive pictorial career as an accomplished flower painter takes place between Lombardy and Veneto, where she worked under the patronage of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, Ferdinand II de' Medici and his wife Victoria della Rovere. His works were also highly esteemed in the Spanish court, during the reign of Carlos II and the VII Marquis del Carpio, Don Gaspar de Haro treasured several of his works in his impressive collection. His compositions show a chromatic predominance of bluish and crimson tones that contrast on the dark backgrounds submerged in penumbra. The bouquets of its showy flowers are usually arranged on copper vases that rest on stone plinths.

Le pennellate dense e sfrangiate, con la materia che si aggruma e rende vibrante la superficie grazie ai sapienti colpi di lume sono un indizio di stile, che si differenzia notevolmente dal fare pittorico di Giuseppe Vicenzino, più attento agli aspetti descrittivi e naturalistici. Margherita, come possiamo osservare, predilige gli effetti cromatici, creando composizioni precocemente rococò, che saranno di esempio per i naturamortisti settecenteschi.

Margherita Volò o Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 - Milano 1710) Natura morta Olio su tela 108 x 83 cm L’opera, per il particolare vaso, lo sfondo bruno e l’andamento trasversale della composizione floreale è da riferire a Margherita Volò. Il padre Vincenzo è un pittore di fiori di origine francese, quindi si presume che Margherita sia stata sua allieva. Fu una pittrice famosa per la "rara di lei abilità in dipingere fiori sopra qualsivoglia stoffa di seta, e sopra tele e carte: e segnatamente sulle pergamene, le quali assai ricercate le erano, e a caro prezzo pagate" (Lancetti). Da giovane, sposa il pittore cremonese Ludovico Caffi, artista formato a Bologna presso D. M. Canuti, specializzato nel dipingere fiori e tappeti. Margherita è stata pittrice di fama sin dalla giovane età, osservando gli inventari antichi, in particolar modo milanesi. Le sue nature morte sono pervase da un elegante gusto decorativo: i fiori, con pochi frutti, sono disposti in modo del tutto irreale e fantastico contro uno sfondo scuro, su cui risaltano delicate tinte rosa, bianche, gialle ma anche rossi vivaci. I contorni sono mossi e sfrangiati, la pennellata è densa e vibrata, la sua tecnica l’avvicina a quanto prodotto in Veneto da Elisabetta Marchioni, e pare anticipare, se non influenzare quanto prodotto da Francesco Guardi, altrimenti detto il Maestro dei Fiori Guardeschi e/o Pseudo Guardi. (Cremona, 1647 - Milano, 1710) Natura morta con fiori e tappeto Olio su tela, cm 187X135 Queste scenografiche nature morte suggeriscono la loro appartenenza alla scuola lombarda e l'attribuzione alla pittrice Margherita Caffi, personalità di spicco della famiglia Volò e sposa di Ludovico Caffi. Le pennellate dense e sfrangiate, con la materia che si aggruma e rende vibrante la superficie grazie ai sapienti colpi di lume sono un indizio preciso di stile, che si differenzia notevolmente dal fare pittorico di Giuseppe Vicenzino, più attento agli aspetti descrittivi e naturalistici. Margherita, come possiamo osservare, predilige gli effetti cromatici, creando composizioni precocemente rococò e caratterizzate da una notevole qualità. Le sue opere saranno di esempio per i naturamortisti settecenteschi e per queste motivazioni la tela in esame si può considerare una testimonianza preziosa della sua attività, non solo per i risultati estetici ma anche per le notevoli dimensioni e le varietà naturalistiche rappresentate. Un altro aspetto da considerare è la teatralità con cui sono concepiti i dipinti, che recano analogie con le creazioni di Antonio Gianlisi (Rizzolo San Giorgio, 1677- Cremona, 1727), in modo particolare se si prende a riferimento l'espediente scenico della tenda e la varietà dei brani naturalistici raffigurati, tanto da poter indurre a pensarlo quale autore di queste bellissime nature in posa.
