FRANCESCO CAIRO (1607 – 1665). Artemisia. The work is accompanied by a text by Dr. Davide Dotti. Provenance: Zanasi Foundation, Modena. Rendered with extraordinary expressive power, the painting depicts Artemisia of Caria, the Greek queen who, according to ancient historiography, drank the ashes of her husband and brother Mausolus as an ultimate act of love and mourning. A theme favored by Italian Baroque painters, it is here interpreted with both dramatic intensity and intimate restraint, orchestrated by a painter who proves to be a skilled director of human emotion. Isolated in the foreground, Artemisia dominates the scene with her regal presence: her hands grasp the golden cup containing her husband’s ashes, while her tear-streaked face and upward gaze convey the emotional tension of the moment. The composition and spatial arrangement, structured around an architectural plinth that guides the viewer’s eye toward the twilight sky framed by a window in the background, reveal a fully Baroque theatricality, consistent with the highest expressions of this visual language in mid-17th-century Lombardy. The attribution to Francesco Cairo, proposed by Davide Dotti, is supported by the formal quality and psychological intensity of the image, placing the work in the artist’s mature phase, around the 1640s. Numerous comparisons reinforce this attribution: from the Saint Catherine in the altarpiece of San Salvario to the Young Woman with Tambourine in the Palazzo Reale in Genoa, as well as the portraits in the Ambrosiana and Brera collections. The soft modeling of Artemisia’s face, breast, and arm finds close parallels in the Cleopatras of the Ambrosiana and Glasgow, while the richly rendered sleeve recalls the Minerva auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1987.. 95 x 128,50 cm.

Francesco Cairo (Milano 1607 - 1665) bottega/seguace di Lucrezia Olio su tela 53 x 41 cm L'opera riprende il dipinto conservato presso le collezioni del principe del Liechtenstein. Francesco Cairo iniziò a studiare presso il Morazzone, poi, con l’arrivo della peste a Milano nel 1633, andò a Torino ed entrò alla corte dei Savoia. La sua arte in questo frangente si evolse verso un parossismo drammatico e improntata verso una spiritualità contorta ed emotiva. Dopo il soggiorno torinese si spostò a Roma, soggiornandovi un anno e studiando i grandi maestri del Manierismo, del Rinascimento e il caravaggismo a lui caro, vista l’esasperata drammaticità della sua espressione artistica. Nel 1644 tornò a Milano, che lasciò solo due anni dopo per un nuovo soggiorno presso i Savoia a Torino. Il nostro dipinto si inserisce alla perfezione nella produzione del Cairo quando tratta figure a mezzo busto con tragicità violenta: i personaggi, quasi sempre figure femminili, riempiono l’intero spazio nel quadro, ed esercitano un forte impatto emotivo verso lo spettatore con i loro gesti carichi e tormentati. Spetta a Mina Gregori l'aver dato inizio a una delineazione del catalogo che dagli anni Settanta ha trovato un adeguato ordinamento critico, sviluppatosi con la mostra del 1983 e la monografia di Frangi del 1998. Come sappiamo, il pittore si formò molto probabilmente a Milano con Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli detto il Morazzone, dal quale ereditò la tavolozza e la tensione drammatica. All'inizio degli anni Trenta Cairo si trasferì a Torino, dove fu nominato pittore di corte di Vittorio Amedeo I, duca di Savoia e alla fine del decennio, dopo una visita a Roma, dove poté studiare sia la pittura classicista che quella caravaggesca, tornò in patria lavorando a Torino, Varese e Milano. Tornando alla tela in esame ne percepiamo la straordinaria tensione emotiva quanto mai borromaica, con il volto in estasi del Santo che emerge dal fondale tramite un lume sfumato, accentuandone gli aspetti naturalistici secondo una trama tenebrosa che inevitabilmente evoca al meglio il naturalismo lombardo degli anni Trenta. Si segnala altresì una simile composizione (olio su tela, cm 44,3X35) conservata nei Musei Civici di Palazzo Madama già di collezione Testori e dallo studioso giudicata del periodo giovanile in analogia con il San Francesco in estasi dei Musei Civici di Milano che Francesco Frangi data tra il 1630 e il 1635, segnalando altresì una copia esitata dalla Christie's di Roma l'11-12 giugno 1973, lotto 110 di cm 35,5x30, (Cfr. Frangi, Francesco Cairo, Torino 1998, p. 236, n. 12, fig. 13).

Il nostro dipinto si inserisce alla perfezione nella produzione del Cairo quando tratta figure a mezzo busto con tragicità violenta: i personaggi, quasi sempre figure femminili, riempiono l’intero spazio nel quadro, ed esercitano un forte impatto emotivo verso lo spettatore con i loro gesti carichi e tormentati. La splendida opera è in via del tutto precauzionale attribuita alla bottega del Cairo, ovvero realizzata sotto la direzione del maestro con probabili suoi interventi, oppure a uno dei valenti allievi, operosi secondo lo stile del celeberrimo artista, dopo la sua morte. Francesco Cairo (Milano 1607 - 1665) attribuito San Francesco Olio su tela 132 x 95,5 cm Elemento imprescindibile della scena barocca milanese, Francesco Cairo inizia la formazione con il Morazzone, come dimostrano le sue opere giovanili eseguite per le chiese milanesi e la Certosa di Pavia. Ben presto lascia la città natale per raggiungere Torino. Tra il 1637 e il 1638 è a Roma, dove studia il Barocco classicista emiliano di Guido Reni, Domenichino, Guercino, Lanfranco Caravaggio, i Caravaggeschi e Pietro Berrettini ovvero Pietro da Cortona. Tornato in Lombardia, forte della sua complessa cultura pittorica, evolve il suo stile, caratterizzato dalle figure in disperata passione, trasfigurazione dolorosa ed estasi, verso una pittura non meno patetica, ma più raffinata e ricca, ammiccante negli esiti fiamminghi e genovesi della sua epoca. La vicenda critica del pittore ha inizio nel 1916 con le pioneristiche ricerche di Roberto Longhi, tuttavia, sia alla mostra del 1922 dedicata alla pittura italiana del Sei-Settecento, sia durante le ricerche successive (Longhi 1943, p. 55), lo studioso considerava di area caravaggesca non poche sue opere. Queste, emergono dal fondale tenebroso tramite un lume sfumato che delinea le forme e dove è necessario accentua gli aspetti naturalistici, secondo una trama tenebrosa che inevitabilmente evoca la matrice romana postcaravaggesca degli anni Trenta. Diviene allora comprensibile l'errore longhiano che assegnava al Riminaldi il San Sebastiano di Tours, che con la sua datazione al 1635 offre un parametro cronologico allÂ¿inedito qui presentato. JUDITH UND IHRE ALTE AMME Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 131 x 107 cm. Dreiviertelbildnis der Judith mit dunkelblondem wohlfrisiertem Haar, elegantem weißen glänzenden Kleid mit goldenen Verzierungen, darüber ein mit Goldfäden durchwirkter durchsichtiger Schal und eine mehrreihige dünne Goldkette um den Hals. Links von ihr ein mit rotem Samt gedeckter Tisch, auf dem eine kleine intarsierte Holztruhe steht, in der sich zahlreiche Schmuckstücke befinden, nach denen sie mit ihrer rechten Hand greift. Rechts neben ihr, in grauem Gewand mit Kopfbedeckung, wohl ihre alte Amme. Beide Frauen, mit leicht geröteten Wangen und schmalen roten Lippen, schauen sich mit ihren dunkelbraunen Augen voller Ernsthaftigkeit an. Im Hintergrund ein schwerer roter faltiger Vorhang, der auch auf ein Zelt hinweisen könnte. Die Darstellung wohl Bezug nehmend auf die biblische Stelle, in der Judith in ihrem schönsten Kleid, und wohl auch mit wertvollem Schmuck versehen, mit ihrer Magd ins Feldlager des Holofernes geht, um durch dessen Enthauptung die Stadt Betulia von der Belagerung zu befreien. Die Spannung zwischen den Frauen deutet wohl auf die bevorstehende Tat der Judith hin. Eine alternative Zuschreibung an Stefano Magnasco (um 1635-1674) mit einem Entstehungszeitraum von 1650-1670 ist ebenfalls möglich. Darstellung der auf einem Kissen sitzenden Maria mit blauem Umhang, ihre Rechte hält die Hand des Jesuskindes, welches unter ihrem Gesicht gleichsam Schutz sucht und mit seiner linken Hand das Gesicht der Maria berührt. Umliegende Vegetation mit Janusgesichtsstatue und sie überfangenden Amoretten. JUDITH UND IHRE ALTE AMME Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 65 x 81 cm. In Nahsicht die Halbfigur der Judith mit dunkelblondem wohlfrisiertem Haar, elegantem weißem Kleid mit goldenen Verzierungen, darüber ein mit Goldfäden durchwirkter durchsichtiger Schal und dünnen Goldkettchen um den Hals. Rechts neben ihr in grauem Gewand mit Kopfbedeckung eine Gehilfin, wohl ihre alte Amme. Beide Frauen mit leicht geröteten Wangen und schmalen roten Lippen. Sie schauen sich mit ihren dunkelbraunen Augen ernsthaft an. Im Hintergrund schwere rote, teils bestickte Vorhänge, die auch auf ein Zelt hinweisen könnten. Die Darstellung wohl bezugnehmend auf die biblische Stelle, in der Judith in ihrem schönsten Kleid mit ihrer Magd ins Feldlager des Holofernes geht, um durch dessen Enthauptung die Stadt Betulia von der Belagerung zu befreien. Die Spannung zwischen den Frauen deutet wohl auf die bevorstehende Tat der Judith hin. Malerei in zurückhaltender Farbgebung. Retuschen. (1231341) (18)

(as Francesco Cairo) Exhibited: Leonardo da Vinci exhibition (according to a label on the reverse) We are grateful to Francesco Frangi for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original. This painting belongs to the late period of Francesco del Cairo’s career. It represents the Magdalene, bust-length, her breast uncovered, and her gaze turned towards the ground as she holds a skull, the symbol of her penitence. The ochre pallet and the dark ground contribute to heightening the pathos of the scene, in a manner typical of Cairo’s paintings. The artist represented the Magdalene on several occasions including the Penitent Magdalene from the Pinacoteca Malaspina of the Musei Civici di Pavia. Francesco Cairo most likely trained in Milan with Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, il Morazzone from whom he inherited a dark and earthy pallet and a tendency to represent figures in his compostions dramatically, sometimes employing strong contrasting shadows, chiaroscuro. At the beginning of the 1630s Cairo moved to Turin where he was appointed court painter to Vittorio Amadeo I, Duke of Savoy. By the end of the decade, following a visit to Rome where he was able to study both classicist and Caravaggist painting, he returned to northern Italy and worked in Turin, Varese and Milan where he resettled towards the end of the 1640s. His style also absorbed the influence of Venetian cinquecento painting, leading to his attainment of freer manner handling of paint, endowed with rich sfumato effects, attributes that are apparent in the present painting.

(Varese, 1607 - Milano, 1665) Madonna col Bambino Olio su tavola, cm 35X26 Il dipinto va riferito alla bottega di Francesco Cairo, uno dei protagonisti della cultura artistica lombarda del XVII secolo. L'opera esprime un linguaggio pittorico desunto dal maestro, dove il gusto naturalistico si unisce a un timbro di dolcezza ispirato dal Nuvolone, in modo particolare se si osserva la stesura e le cromie. Ciò indica una datazione matura, quando affrancatosi dagli esempi del Cerano e del Morazzone lo stile del Cairo si arricchisce delle suggestioni cortonesche coltivate in occasione del soggiorno romano del 1638-1639, ma soprattutto, si allinea alle esperienze del Barocco genovese, di cui condivide l'attrazione per il colorismo.
