Measurements: 51 x 79 cm; 62,5 x 90 cm (frame). In this panoramic image the artist presents us with a scene taken from a village in the north of Spain, as can be seen in the clothes of the characters and in the architecture that forms part of the scene. The artist in this work becomes a chronicler who provides a faithful, documentary vision. The new genre of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century genre painting was born as a way of interpreting a growing sense of national consciousness, now present in the middle classes as they moved towards social hegemony. To a certain extent, the painters' concern was to deepen the vision of their country through a language, that of painting, which everyone could understand, thus helping the common people to grasp the nature and meaning of their nationality, especially as it had manifested itself in the recent past, still vivid in the memory of the elders. José Cala y Moya began his studies at the Seville School of Art, but later transferred to the Madrid School of Art. In 1874 he began his professional career when he decided to exhibit some of his works at the Martínez Silver Factory. That same year he submitted one of his works to the newspaper La Ilustración, which awarded him a prize. In 1876 he took part in the National Exhibition, and continued to take part in exhibitions such as the one in Cadiz and in Paris with a portrait of a lady and another of an old man.

In this panoramic image the artist presents us with a scene taken from an Arab city, as can be seen in the clothes of the characters and in the architecture that forms part of the scene. The artist in this work becomes a chronicler who provides a faithful and documentary vision. Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the Romantic spirit of flight in time and space. The first Orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the outset to fail. Like Flaubert in "Salambo", painters painted detailed portraits of the Orient and imagined pasts, recreated down to the last millimetre but ultimately unknown and idealised. During the second half of the 19th century, however, many of the painters who travelled to the Middle East in search of this invented reality discovered a different and new country, which stood out with its peculiarities above the clichés and prejudices of Europeans. Thus, this new school of Orientalism left behind the beautiful odalisques, harems and slave markets to paint nothing more than what they saw, the real East in all its everyday dimensions. Along with the change of vision came a technical and formal change; since it was no longer a question of recreating an imagined world in all its details, the brushstroke acquired impressionistic ease, and the artists focused not so much on depicting the types and customs as on faithfully reflecting the atmosphere of the place, the very identity of the North African populations. José Cala y Moya began his studies at the Seville School of Art, but later transferred to the Madrid School of Art. He began his professional career in 1874, when he decided to exhibit some of his works at the Martínez Platería.
