Santiago Calatrava Valls (Spanish, 1951) Architectural Model for the Kopp Reside

            Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Santiago Calatrava Valls (Spanish, 1951) Architectural Model for the Kopp Residence, Modellbau Zaborowsky Plastic, papier mache, paint 11 x 22-1/2 x 19-3/4 inches (27.9 x 57.2 x 50.2 cm) Plaque by model-maker affixed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava is known for his bold bridges and buildings recognizable for his daring use of angles and structures of organic form. These presentation models are designs for an unrealized residential project for an interior designer in the Camelback Mountains in Phoenix, Arizona. Each model, meticulously built by Zaborowsky in Zurich, shows the extraordinary vision Calatrava brought to constructing a house in the desert landscape, which would be built into and around the rugged hills. Calatrava is also a recognized artist who has exhibited his paintings, sculptures and architectural models at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and these models encapsulate his mastery of the medium. Santiago Calatrava Valls (Spanish, b. 1951) Charger, 2005 Ceramic 22-1/4 inches (56.5 cm) Signed and dated CALATRAVA MANISES 8-8-05 PROVENANCE: Estate of Margaret McDermott, Dallas, Texas; Private collection, Dallas, Texas. Internationally renowned architect and designer Santiago Calatrava created a group of ceramics in the town of Manises, Spain, known for a centuries old ceramics tradition. The collection was exhibited in New York at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute in late 2005. The decoration of stylized human figures, bulls and horses was incised or painted onto the surfaces by Calatrava, using natural iron-oxide pigments in use in the region since before Roman times. Calatrava made a statement at the time of the exhibition, noting, "It's such a primitive, elemental way to draw, and yet the greatest of the modern masters, Picasso and Matisse, chose it as one of their means of expression. So there is a lot to confront in making these works—but there is something very refreshing about doing them, too." HID01801242017
