EDWARD CALVERT (BRITISH 1799-1883)THE PLOUGHMANWood engraving on wove paper, a posthumous printing of the final state probably a trial impression prior to the edition published by Carfax and Co, Ltd, 19048.3 x 12.7cm (3¼ x 5in.); together with two facsimiles after William Blakes's illustrations to Dante's Inferno: The Circle of the Lustful; and The Circle of Thieves (3) Calvert's early visionary work was greatly inspired by that of William Blake (1757-1827) and he was a member of 'The Ancients', devotees of Blake who gathered around Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) at Shoreham in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Amongst Calvert's finest works are his small wood engravings which date from 1827-31, but were only seen by friends until published by his son in 1893.

Ltd, Limited Edition of 225 impressions, cream boards with red cloth spine and white bordered title label pasted to front cover on the upper board. Encased in original glacine wrapper, with a prefatory note by Raymond Lister. Calvert (1799-1883) was a leading member of 'The Ancients' strongly influenced by William Blake and Samuel Palmer. Calvert's entire published work on wood is reproduced in this volume, all executed between 1827 & 1831.

'The results, somewhere between the prophetic art of Blake and the mysticism of Palmer, are among the purest visual expressions of the Ancients’ desire for a lost golden age'. Calvert moved to London in 1824 to study at the Royal Academy. He was introduced to Blake and became one of his group of followers known as the Ancients. (see lot 261).

Note: Alongside Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), Calvert was a central member of the artistic group known as 'The Ancients', who were united by their admiration for William Blake (1757-1827), who died the year before Calvert produced this print in 1828. This composition exhibits a strong debt to Blake, particularly in its pagan imagery, and the evocation of an idyllic and bountiful natural setting.

Ltd., 1904, the complete portfolio of 11 engravings, woodcuts, and lithographs on India paper, printed from the original plates and blocks by Carfax & Co. in 1904, in an edition limited to 30 sets, comprising two copper engravings, seven woodcuts, and two lithographs, plus printed title, and original printed envelope, all loose, sheet size 415 x 313 mm, now presented in individual brown card passe-partouts and housed in later grey cloth drop-over book box, with large morocco gilt label to upper cover 'Edward Calvert, 1799-1883, The Carfax Portfolio 1904' QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Estate of Nicholas and Frances McDowall. Lister 2, 6c, 7c, 8c, 9b, 10, 11, 12c, 13c, 14b, 15b. The printed title page provides a note on the edition: 'The issue is limited to thirty copies. The two copper engravings and seven woodcuts have been printed from the original plates and blocks, which have been presented to the British Museum, and from which no more impressions will be taken. Of the two engravings on stone, the impressions are from a remainder, numbering only thirty-five, of those printed under the artist's own supervision in 1829. (After printing the stones were cleaned and in the 'Memoir' by his third son these subjects were reproduced by means of photo-process blocks.)'. A key member of the artist's group known as the Brotherhood of the Ancients alongside Samuel Palmer, George Richmond, and Frederick Tatham, Edward Calvert studied at the Royal Academy Schools in 1824. He produced a total of eleven prints between 1827 and 1831, which express the group's common admiration for Wiliam Blake's intense mystical vision of an ideal pastoral world or earthly paradise. The young artists were particularly struck by the minute visionary woodcuts Blake had produced for Robert Thornton's school edition of Virgil in 1821. The portfolio contains two copper engravings: The Bride, and The Sheep of his Pasture, seven wood engravings: The Ploughman, The Brook, The Chamber Idyll, The Cyder Feast, The Lady and the Rooks, The Return Home, and The Baccante, and two lithographs: The Flood, and Ideal Pastoral Life.
