Comparable: Sothebys, March 3, 2021 - $ 88,200. Nicolino Calyo's career reflects a restless spirit of enterprise and adventure. Descended in the line of the Viscontes di Calyo of Calabria, the artist was the son of a Neapolitan army officer. (See the brief biographical sketch by Kathleen Foster, prefacing catalogue entry no. 257 in Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia: Three Centuries of American Art, exhib. cat., [1976], pp. 299-301.) Calyo received formal training in art at the Naples Academy. His career took shape amidst the backdrop of the political turbulence of early nineteenth century Italy, Spain, and France. He fled Naples after choosing the losing side of struggles of 1820-21, and, by 1829 was part of an Italian exile community in Malta. This was the keynote of a peripatetic life that saw the artist travel through Europe, to America, to Europe again, and back to America. Paradoxically, Calyo's stock-in-trade was close observation of people and places, meticulously rendered in the precise topographical tradition of his fellow countrymen, Antonio Canale (called Canaletto) and Francesco Guardi. In search of artistic opportunity and in pursuit of a living, Calyo left Malta, and, by 1834, was on the opposite side of the great Atlantic Ocean, in Baltimore, Maryland. He advertised his skills in the April 16, 1835, edition of the Baltimore American, offering "remarkable views executed from drawings taken on the spot by himself,... in which no pains or any resource of his art has been neglected, to render them accurate in every particular" (as quoted in The Art Gallery and The Gallery of the School of Architecture, University of Maryland College Park, 350 Years of Art & Architecture in Maryland [1984], p. 35). Favoring gouache on paper as his medium, Calyo rendered faithful visual images of familiar locales executed with a degree of skill and polish that was second nature for European academically-trained artists. Indeed, it was the search for this graceful fluency that made American artists eager to travel to Europe and that led American patrons to seek out the works of ambitious newcomers. Calyos American Landscape bears great resemblance to another view by the artist entitled Montagne de Soaking sur le haut du Mississippi, from an album he produced in 1844. Montagne de Soaking, present day Trempealeau (trempe à leau) Mountain, is situated along the upper Mississippi River in Wisconsin. Steamboat travel along the Mississippi reached its peak in the mid-nineteenth century, making scenic areas along its course, including Trempealeau Mountain, popular destinations for those travelers. While it is known that Calyo travelled down the Mississippi to New Orleans in 1837 for an exhibition of his work and again in 1852 to display his panorama on the Mexican American War, it is uncertain whether he travelled north towards Wisconsin. It is possible that Calyos views of Trempealeau are adapted from an 1839 steel engraving by Henry Jordan after James Charles Ward.

He drew inspiration from the bustling city, creating striking renderings of urban workers, vendors, and other street figures in the manner of Jacques Callot; a group of these were published in 1840 as the Cries of New York. Calyo’s vivid landscape paintings are perhaps his greatest legacy. As an experienced traveler and artist, he made many of his watercolor and gouache sketches on location; some of which became sources for larger scale landscapes on paper. Calyo continued to be active in scenic painting through the 1850s.

Note During the 19th century, The Fairmount Water Works was world renowned for its Classical Revival beauty, state-of-the-art engineering, and well-designed public gardens and walkways. Built between 1812-1815 from a design by engineer Frederick Graff (1774-1847), the new landmark solved the inadequate storage problem of the earlier Water Works, designed by architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820). This large and enchanting View of the Schuylkill River and Fairmount Water Works by Nicolino Calyo, is the artist's only known oil on canvas of the subject. The highly detailed technique and soft, luminous palette sets this work apart from the many artists who depicted the scene in the 19th century. Nicolino Calyo was born in Naples and received classical art training in the Italian figure and landscape tradition at the Naples Academy. Politically active as a young man, Calyo was forced to leave Italy in 1821 due to the resulting chaos of attempts to unseat Ferdinand I. For the next eight years, Calyo traveled and sketched throughout Europe. In 1829, he relocated to Malta, where he taught drawing until political upheaval again forced him to relocate in 1833 - first to the Canary and Cape Verde Islands, and then to Baltimore in 1834. The cosmopolitan artist moved permanently to New York in 1835, advertising himself as a 'portrait and landscape painter' as well as 'professor of painting.' Calyo exhibited his panoramic European and American views in the culturally active cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and New Orleans, and he painted and sketched local views while there. Calyo visited Philadelphia in 1835 and eventually created a number of versions of View of the Schuylkill River and View of the Fairmount Water Works in watercolor and gouache on paper. One work, View of the Waterworks at Fairmount, is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Accompanied by a conservation report from 2016. repaired 3 1/2 in. tear upper right sky, repaired 1 1/2 in. tear lower center left at water, craquelure, minor retouch.

He was trained at the Naples Academy as a painter of portraits, landscapes and historical subjects. Primarily known for his watercolor and gouache landscapes, he also painted various scenes depicting historic events. Calyo arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1834, where by the spring and summer of 1835, he had arranged for several exhibitions of his works. Later that year, he went briefly to Philadelphia, then on to New York, where he painted a number of oil on canvas views of the Great New York City Fire. This view of Baltimore Harbor is viewed from the northwest looking toward the inner harbor. The sun sets where the current Harbor Court Hotel is today and to the left of the viewer is Federal Hill and Fort McHenry.
