Humberto Calzada (Cuba, Born 1944) La Cortina de Marwol (The Marble Curtain) 1990 The striking, architecturally precise yet dreamlike composition void of human form is signed lower left. The work is signed again, titled and dated on the canvas verso along with an important gallery label from Galeria Arteconsult, one of the most prominent, historic fine art institutions in Central America. Founded in Panama City in 1979 by the art historian and dealer Carmen Aleman Healy, it has served Latin American, Cuban exile, and Caribbean contemporary artists for nearly five decades. Humberto Calzada was a Cuban-American painter known for architecturally precise, surreal compositions inspired by the colonial and neoclassical buildings of Havana. Born in Cuba and exiled to Miami in 1960, he studied industrial engineering and finance at the University of Miami before turning to painting full-time in 1976. Associated with the influential ''Miami Generation'' of Cuban-American artists, Calzada achieved international recognition for his luminous paintings exploring exile, memory, decay, and reconstruction through idealized architectural space. His work was exhibited widely throughout the Americas and is held in major museum collections including the Lowe Art Museum, Bass Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Chile. Overall framed size measures 52.5 x 44.5 inches. Lot Essay: Humberto Calzada is a Cuban-American artist known for his deep engagement with Cuban cultural memory, particularly through the use of architectural motifs. Trained as an industrial engineer, Calzada began his artistic career in the early 1960s with ink drawings that depicted colonial haciendas and mid-century Cuban architecture. These early works hinted at the architectural focus that would define his mature style. He rose to prominence in the Miami art scene around 1975 as part of the "Miami Generation" of Cuban exile artists, including Cesar Trasobares and Maria Brito, who collectively shaped a new movement in Cuban-American art. By the 1980s, Calzada's paintings began to take on surreal qualities - walls and staircases led nowhere, and water and sea imagery became dominant themes. These elements expressed both nostalgia and a conceptual exploration of displacement, memory, and identity. His work increasingly reflected a longing for the homeland he left behind, using architectural details - such as stained-glass windows, panoramic arches, and colorful tiles - as metaphors for cultural continuity. His handling of light and color further elevated these spaces into dreamlike visions, evoking both the lost past and imagined reconstructions of Cuban spaces.
