Characteristic for the painter is the use of dark colors in mostly various shades of grey. The image of the cat is found frequently in Camargo's works. It is probably a portrait of his cat Martin, whom he affectionately called 'cucuruco'. Martin accompanied him since 1983 throughout his life and was a great inspiration for his artistic work. His paintings are characterized by a severity on the one side and a unique sensibility on the other, which is also expressed in the image presented here. The painting is signed and dated 'Iberê Camargo 85' and is furthermore signed on verso 'Iberê Camargo' and inscribed 'Óleo 30x42, P. Alegre, 26/01/85, Gato, Nio/85' as well as labeled by Gallery Delphus, Porto Alegre, Brazil. It is in very good condition. The wood panel is mounted on a support and is framed by a golden decorative frame. The dimension of the image is 30 x 42 cm. The overall dimensions including frame are 59 x 68.5 cm. The frame shows barely signs of wear. Iberê Camargo (1914-1994) Iberê Camargo was born in the Brazilian Restinga Seca in 1914. In 1927 he began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Santa Maria. He moved to Porto Alegro in 1936 and began his studies at the Institute of Fine Arts under Alberto da Veiga Guignard. There he met his future wife Mary. In 1942 the couple moved to Rio de Janero , where Camargo a little later received a professorship in printmaking at the Institute of Fine Arts. 1948 Camargo traveled to Europe to study the great masters. He was particularly impressed by the painters Giorgio De Chirico, Carlo Alberto Petrucci , Leoni Augusto Rosa , Antonio Achille and André Lhote. After his return to Brazil in 1950 Iberê won numerous awards and participated in several international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennale , the Biennale in Madrid and the Venice Biennale as well as Tokyo. His works can be found in renowned collections such as the Guggenheim, New York and many others. Shortly after his death 1994, the artist's estate, containing over 7000 works, were passed to the newly established Fundação Iberê Camargo, founded in 1995, devoting its work to cataloging and research of Camargo works.
