Anne-Marie Grammont-Camoin has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in the forthcoming Charles Camoin catalogue raisonné. A certificate could be delivered at the expense of the purchaser. In “Bords de l’Arc” Charles Camoin captures the gently glowing colours of his homeland in the south of France. From its source near Pourcieux, the Arc river runs across Aix-en-Provence before finally feeding into the Lagune Étang de Berre, which joins with the Mediterranean west of Marseille, the city where Camoin was born. Prior to his 1906 journey to the south of France, which he undertook with his friend and fellow artist Albert Marquet and which led to the creation of the work presented here, Camoin mostly lived in Paris. He studied there in the circle around Gustave Moreau and was engaged in an intimate exchange of ideas with artists like Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and André Derain. In spite of his proximity to the Fauves group, with whom he exhibited his work in Paris in 1905, Camoin never understood himself as part of a defined movement. His painting, as in the case of the picture here, is distinguished by its subtle palette: the dabbed brushstrokes of the water and foliage’s delicate tones of green, blue and yellow – supplemented with lilac and a pale coral red along the shore – merge into an atmospheric depiction of the glistening southern light and the dynamic nature along the riverbank.

An auction receipt (bordereau d'adjudication) from Henri Baudoin (1876-1963), auctioneer in Paris, dated 1943, is available. Also preserved are an auction slip with handwritten notes and price indications for the works. Minimal paint losses on the leaf on the pedestal beneath the vase as well as in the upper right corner. Framed. Charles Camoin began his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and continued it later in Paris in the studio of Gustave Moreau, where he met Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet. During his military service in Aix-en-Provence, he encountered Paul Cezanne - a formative acquaintance that developed into a long-lasting friendship and an intense correspondence. Although Camoin is often associated with the Fauves, his work differs in certain respects from the more radical tendencies of the movement. His use of color remains clear and vibrant, but he refrains from the extreme expressiveness and stark contrasts that characterize many of his colleagues. Instead, he developed a more nuanced personal style within the Fauvist spectrum. Together with artist friends like Matisse and Marquet, he worked in various locations: on the Cote d'Azur, Corsica, Collioure, and Tangier. After World War I, he lived and worked alternately in Saint-Tropez and Paris. Camoin exhibited regularly at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. The still life shown here is believed to date from the 1930s/40s. In composition and style, it recalls other works from this period, especially The Blue Bowl, now in the Centre Pompidou. Charles Camoin begann seine künstlerische Ausbildung an der École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille und setzte sie später in Paris im Atelier von Gustave Moreau fort, wo er auf Matisse, Rouault und Marquet traf. Während seines Militärdienstes in Aix-en-Provence begegnete er Paul Cézanne - eine prägende Bekanntschaft, aus der eine langjährige Freundschaft und ein intensiver Briefwechsel hervorgingen. Obwohl Camoin häufig mit den Fauves in Verbindung gebracht wird, unterscheidet sich sein Werk in gewisser Hinsicht von den radikaleren Strömungen der Bewegung. Seine Farbgebung bleibt klar und leuchtend, doch verzichtet er auf die extreme Expressivität und die schroffen Kontraste, die viele seiner Kollegen kennzeichnen. Vielmehr entwickelte er eine eigene, nuanciertere Handschrift innerhalb des fauvistischen Spektrums. Gemeinsam mit Künstlerfreunden wie Matisse und Marquet arbeitete er an unterschiedlichen Orten: an der Côte d'Azur, auf Korsika, in Collioure und in Tanger. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg lebte und arbeitete er abwechselnd in Saint-Tropez und Paris. Camoin stellte regelmäßig im Salon des Indépendants und im Salon d'Automne aus. Das hier gezeigte Stillleben dürfte aus den 1930er/40er-Jahren stammen. In Komposition und Stil erinnert es an andere Werke dieser Zeit, insbesondere an 'Die blaue Schale', heute im Centre Pompidou. Mai 2001 Auktionsverk, Stockholm, Los 795, im selben Jahr durch die Salzburger Galerie Salis & Vertes in der Festspielausstellung "La joie de vivre" präsentiert, dort als Nr. 53 im Kat., danach süddeutscher Privatbesitz, ab Ende 2024 süddeutscher Kunsthandel. Künstlerinfo: frz. Maler (1879 Marseille bis 1965 Paris), Studium an der Akademie der Schönen Künste Marseille, dabei erhielt er einen Ersten Preis für Zeichnung und Komposition, 1898 zog er nach Paris, besuchte dort an der Akademie die Zeichenklasse von Gustave Moreau, anschließend Studienreisen, gemeinsam mit seinem Freund Albert Marquet, während seiner Studienzeit knüpfte er zudem enge Kontakte zu Künstlern, die später als Pioniere des Fauvismus gelten sollten, darunter Henry Manguin, George Roualt, Jean Puy und Henri Matisse, mit letzterem stand Camoin in regelmäßigem Briefwechsel, während seines Militärdienstes in der Provence knüpfte er Kontakte zu Paul Cezanne, mit dem er ebenfalls sein Leben lang in Kontakt blieb, in seinem Frühwerk stand Camoins Werk unter dem Eindruck der Schule der Provence, die sich durch einen großzügigen, kräftig-energischen Pinselstrich auszeichnete, dieser Einfluss war so stark, dass einige von Camoins Frühwerken sogar fälschlicherweise Paul Gauguin zugeschrieben wurden, 1903 stellte er zum ersten Mal im Salon der Unabhängigen Künstler in Paris aus, 1905 hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Berthe Weill Galerie in Paris, an der Seite von "Les Animals" wie Matisse oder Derain stellte er im selben Jahr im Pariser Herbstsalon aus, in den 1910er Jahren unternahm er weitere umfangreiche Reisen mit Marquet, unter anderem nach England, Deutschland, Italien und Marokko, 1912 Ausstellung in der Pariser Galerie Kahnweiler, 1913 in der Armory Show in New York, sein persönlicher Erfolg auf den Ausstellungen in Paris und in New York löste bei Camoin eine Art Depression aus, deren Ursache nicht vollständig geklärt ist und in deren Folge er rund 80 seiner Bilder zerstörte, dabei sollte Camoin 1927 sogar einen Prozess gegen einen Kunstsammler führen, der ein von ihm zerstörtes und weggeworfenes Gemälde restauriert hatte, wogegen Camoin klagte, daraufhin kam es zu einem Grundsatzurteil, in welchem das Gericht die Restaurierung der durch den Künstler verursachten Zerstörung als unrechtmäßig erklärte, was die Stellung des Künstlers als einzigem Schöpfer seiner Kunst stärkte, Camoins fauvistische Phase hatte sich dagegen auf die 1910er Jahre und auf das Publikum der Pariser Galerie Kahnweiler konzentriert, in seiner malerischen Umsetzung war er indes nie so radikal wie etwa ein Matisse, mit dem er 1918 eine gemeinsame Reise nach Cagne zu Auguste Renoir vornahm, schon im Rahmen seiner vorherigen Reiseerfahrungen hatte Camoin begonnen, sich zunehmend mehr der Darstellung von Lichtwirkung als auf die grelle fauvistische Farbgebung zu konzentrieren, hierin ähnelte er seinem Reisefreund Marquet, der Besuch bei Renoir markierte für Camoin aber die endgültige stilistische Abkehr von Matisse, Camoin entwicke
