Ansicht des Canal Grande mit den prachtvollen Bauten der Stadt an den Uferseiten, die sich im ruhigen Wasser teils widerspiegeln. Einige Gondeln sind mit Soldaten besetzt, was auf die Ausrufung Venedigs als unabhängige Republik 1848 hindeuten könnte. Harmonische Malerei in zurückhaltender Farbgebung mit hohem hellblauen, fast wolkenlosen Himmel. Venedigansicht im schimmernden Mondlicht Öl auf Leinwand. 39 x 62 cm. Rechts unten signiert „C. Canella“. In dekorativem Prunkrahmen. Blick auf den durch das Mondlicht schimmernden Canal Grande mit wenigen Gondeln und zwei größeren Segelschiffen. Im Vordergrund die breite Uferstraße mit zahlreichen Staffagefiguren, zwei Hunden und einer kleinen Brücke, die zur Punta della Dogana und der Basilika Santa Maria della Salute mit ihren großen Kuppeln führt. Am Rand des Ufers eine rötlich leuchtende Straßenlaterne sowie diverse rötliche Lichter aus den Gebäuden, rund um die prachtvolle Kirche. Ref19C121121 Signed lower right: C. Canella The present veduta is a fine example of Carlo Canella's œuvre, the rendering of the atmosphere of a misty morning. Like his older brother Giuseppe, Carlo specialised in the depiction of city views. The work bears witness to the wide-ranging interests of the so-called vedutists of the 19th century and their atmospheric interpretation of urban themes. It belongs to the artist's mature œuvre and was probably painted in the late 1840s on a trip to Tuscany and Florence. As Dr Manuel Rossi kindly informs us, the view is of particular interest with regard to the topography as it shows the banks of the Arno in its appearance before 1870, i.e. before the harbours and coal stockyards were removed and the banks raised.

(Verona 1800–1879 Milan) Florence, Piazza della Signoria from the Loggia dei Lanzi, oil on canvas, 65 x 105 cm, framed A certificate of authenticity issued by Fabrizio Magani is available upon request. The painting depicts one of the most evocative views of Florence. The Loggia dei Lanzi appears in the foreground with its renowned sculptures, the Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna, the group Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus and Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus. Our gaze is then guided towards the Palazzo Vecchio, where we make out the silhouette of Michelangelo’s David and, finally, further down to the Fountain of Neptune by Bartolomeo Ammannati. The painting offers a new perspective on the wide-ranging interests of nineteenth-century “vedutisti” such as Carlo Canella, and their interpretation of urban themes unrelated to their immediate environment. The flowing brushstrokes thicken into the roundness of the marks which distinguish the tiny figures that crowd Piazza della Signoria, and form the distinctive stylistic feature which allows us to attribute this painting to Carlo Canella. Another version of this painting is part of the collection of the Bardini and Peyron Foundation in Florence.

Carlo Canella (Verona 1800 - Milano 1879) LO SFRATTO olio su tela, cm 89x126 retro: iscritto "Canella dip.se" THE EVICTION oil on canvas, 89x126 cm on the reverse: inscribed "Canella dip.se" Il dipinto in esame, un tempo attribuito a Giuseppe Canella, è - come confermato dalla dottoressa Flavia Pesci alla proprietà - un autografo del fratello più giovane Carlo. Come segnalatoci dalla proprietà, della tela esiste un'altra versione attribuita a Giuseppe Canella di dimensioni inferiori (cm 72x99), di ubicazione ignota e di qualità apparentemente inferiore, che rispetto alla nostra presenta diverse varianti; inoltre, la consultazione delle mostre tenutesi a Brera in quegli anni ha rivelato la presenza di un'opera di Carlo Canella di identico soggetto nell'esposizione del 1853 col titolo "Un ricco avaro che fa eseguire contra una povera vedova e la sua famiglia, la pignorazione con espulsione forzata di casa", forse da identificare con la nostra.
