Ma fu nella pittura di paesaggio e di vedute di città che si distinse. Dopo un breve soggiorno a Mantova, si trasferì a Venezia e poco dopo a Milano, ove nel 1919 espose tre paesaggi all'Accademia di Brera. A partire dal 1820 intraprese una serie di viaggi d'ispirazione recandosi prima in Spagna e successivamente, dal 1823, a Parigi, città e soggetto fondamentale nella produzione del pittore. Nel 1826 e 1827 espose ai Salons ed ottenne la medaglia d'oro. In quel periodo si recò inoltre in Alsazia, in Normandia, nel Baden ed in Olanda. Continuò a viaggiare ma la sua città di riferimento divenne Milano, ove fu nominato consigliere dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera da Ferdinando I e rifiutò la cattedra offerta all'Accademia di Venezia. Figurò dunque in diverse esposizioni internazionali a Vienna e a Berlino. Negli ultimi anni della sua carriera si dedicò anche al ritratto ed alla miniatura. Canella, oil on canvas, 69 x 96 cm, framed We are grateful to Prof. Sergio Marinelli for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. Following years of relocation both within Italy and abroad (for example see lots 512 & 541), Giuseppe Canella settled in Florence in May 1847, where he passed away shortly thereafter, on 11 September. He was laid to rest in Santa Croce, though his tombstone was later removed due to the devastating flood of 1966. During his time in Florence, he depicted the city’s main square, placing statues prominently in the foreground, much like an academic study—a carefully arranged collection of both ancient and contemporary sculptures, akin to a plaster cast gallery for the instruction of aspiring artists. At the forefront stands Giambologna’s renowned masterpiece, an exemplary academic model. Canella may have sought to convey the coexistence of classical art with the transient vibrancy of daily life in the city. The composition’s viewpoint rises above the crowd, which is relegated to the side, drawing attention instead to the perspective created by the Loggia. The play of light and the attire of the figures suggests a a moment in late summer. On the reverse of the frame, an inscription—possibly by the artist—reads: ‘veduta della Piazza del Grand Duca in Firenze presa sotto la Loggia dei Lanzi’. Canella exhibited his works regularly throughout his lifetime, up until 1846.

The subject of Venice was inevitable for Veronese painter Giuseppe Canella, perhaps the most important Italian Vedutist of the first half of the 19th century. Venice was widely depicted in the eighteenth century, so much so that it became synonymous with Vedutism itself. It was above all very appealing to foreigners on the Grand Tour. Giuseppe Canella approached the subject relatively late, perhaps in the 1830s, probably to meet the demands of travellers. The composition shows a row of palaces on the Riva. The most original aspect is the platform on the Riva with its two dilapidated wooden houses, before and after the bridge, which provides a showcase of Venetian life, a stage for the characters from popular theatre, abstract like those of Canaletto.

    Skizzenbuch "Vedute di Venezia e del'Lago maggiore" (Deckeltitel) mit 80 Zeichnungen auf 41 Bl. Bleistift auf Papier. Im Buchdeckel sign., nicht dat. (um 1815). Ca. 12 x 19 cm. OHldr. (leicht beschabt und bestoßen). - Giuseppe Canella erhielt seine Ausbildung bei seinem Vater Giovanni Canella, einem Architekten, Maler und Bühnenbildner. Danach arbeitete er an der Dekoration einiger Palazzi in Mantua mit, ehe er sich zwischen 1811 und 1815 in Venedig niederließ. In diese Zeit ist mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit auch unser feines, dicht ausgefülltes Skizzenbuch zu datieren. 34 Zeichnungen und Skizzen zeigen Motive aus Venedig. Häufig handelt es sich hier um Panoramen, die mehrere Sehenswürdigkeiten wie S. Servolo, S. Lazaro und S. Giorgio zusammenfassen, bereichert durch Figuren und Schiffsstaffage. Einige sehr freie Skizzen scheinen wie direkte Vorbereitungen für Gemälde, da sie auch Informationen zur Farbgestaltung beinhalten. Die 15 Figurenstudien zeigen zumeist Venezianer im alltäglichen Treiben, als Fischer, beim Rasten oder beim Umladen der Waren. Im hinteren Teil des Skizzenbuches sind vermehrt Ansichten vom Lago Maggiore, insgesamt 26, zwischen den Venedigansichten eingestreut. Außerdem sind eine Ansicht des Castello di Somma in der Lombardei, 3 Landschaften und 1 Stilleben zu finden. Häufig sind die Seiten ganz klein am Unterrand mit der jeweiligen Ortschaft beschriftet, darunter Sesto und Rocca di Angera. - Obwohl Canella fast alle Blätter beidseitig verwendete, ist in der zweiten Hälfte des Büchleins zu bemerken, dass sich hier die Orte regelmäßig abwechseln. Die linke Seite widmet sich Ansichten des Lago Maggiore, die rechte Venedig. Daraus können wir schließen, dass er das Buch zuerst mit den Ansichten der Serenissima gefüllt hatte, ehe er weiterreiste und für den Lago Maggiore die eher weniger beliebte linke Seite verwendete. Neben den reizvollen Zeichnungen ist also auch der historische Aspekt dieses Werkes nicht zu unterschätzen, belegt er doch eine Abfolge in der Reisetätigkeit des umtriebigen Italieners.

Eine andere, kleinformatige Version des Gemäldes auf Karton (um 1828) befindet sich im Musée Carnavalet in Paris (Inv.-Nr. P35; Format 14,5 cm x 19 cm), wohl eine Studie für das hier vorliegende, größere Gemälde. 1815 entstanden erste Veduten des Künstlers, der seit 1823 in Paris tätig war, wo er Aufträge durch Louis Philippe erhielt und im Salon ausstellte, 1830 erhielt er dort eine Goldmedaille. 1832 wurde Canella in Mailand ansässig, später war er in Venedig tätig.
