Rafael Canogar trained under the painter Daniel Vázquez Díaz between 1949 and 1954. During these years, he worked within the avant-garde movement, soon venturing into abstraction. A co-founder of the “El Paso” group in 1957, during the 1950s he developed a thoroughly informalist body of work, which evolved during the 1960s into a complex figurative style that became increasingly narrative. Beginning in the 1960s, he achieved international recognition as a visiting professor at Milles College in California, where he taught the 1965–66 art course, and as a guest artist at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1969. He was also invited by the D.A.A.D. in Berlin to serve as an artist-in-residence from 1972 to 1974. During his mature period, beginning in 1975, Canogar developed a new, unique, and personal iconography, which he expressed through the mask, the head, and the face—as a representation of man losing his individuality and becoming a plastic sign. His work was also recognized in Spain, and during the 1980s he served as a member of the Advisory Council of the General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture, on the Board of Trustees of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, and as a member of the Board of Directors of National Heritage. Throughout his career, Canogar has held countless exhibitions, both solo and group shows. Among his solo exhibitions, several have been retrospectives, including those at the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Library in Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, the Sonia Heine Foundation in Oslo, the Konsthalle in Lund, Sweden, the Paris Art Center, the Bochum Art Museum in Germany, the Istituto di Storia dell’Arte in Parma, the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the Casa del Cordón Foundation in Burgos, the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo, and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, among others. Canogar has led various workshops and given countless lectures in various European and American countries, and has served on juries for international awards and biennials. He has also been awarded various prizes and honors, including the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Biennial (1971), the Grand Prize at the Sofia International Painting Triennial (1982), the National Prize for the Visual Arts in Madrid (1982), among others. He has also been named a Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters, has received the Commendation of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, is a full member of the San Fernando Academy, and holds an honorary doctorate from the UNED. Canogar’s works are currently represented in the most prominent modern art collections around the world, including the Reina Sofía Museum, MoMA in New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others.

Sculpture belonging to a limited edition of 60 copies, made by Rafael Canogar, a key figure of contemporary Spanish art. The work is part of his sculptural production of geometric and refined language, where the artist explores the tensions between plane, volume and space through the articulation of elementary forms. The composition, of a markedly constructive character, is organized around the intersection of metallic planes that generate a dynamic play of light and shadow, reinforced by the blued finish. This treatment gives the piece a sober and emphatic presence, in line with Canogar's evolution towards an abstraction with structural roots. Canogar was co-founder of the group "El Paso", and during the fifties he developed a fully informalist work, which derived during the sixties in a complex figuration. During his mature stage, from 1975 onwards, Canogar invented a new iconography, his own and personal, which he expresses through the mask, the head, the face, as a representation of the man who loses his individuality and becomes a plastic sign, as can be seen in the work we now present. His awards include the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1982), he is a member of the San Fernando Academy, and is represented in the most important modern art collections around the world, such as the Reina Sofia Museum, the MOMA in New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico, and the Chicago Art Institute, among many others.

The head, turned into a symbol of identity, suffering and memory, acquires a strong emotional and ethical charge, in consonance with the humanist spirit of the editorial project to which it belongs. The folder was conceived on the occasion of the V Centenary of the Discovery of America and to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas. Under the framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it gathered graphic works by some of the most relevant artists of the international panorama of the 20th century, among them Rufino Tamayo, Roberto Matta, Antoni Clavé, José Guerrero, Robert Motherwell, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Julio Le Parc and Antonio Saura. The importance of this edition is further endorsed by the presence of a copy, number 62/100, in the collection of the Pompidou Museum (No. 2-1738), an essential reference of modern and contemporary international art. In "Urban Fossil", Rafael Canogar establishes a dialogue between geological memory and contemporary language. The work is made on stone with nerineas fossils, a support that introduces a very significant material and temporal dimension: in front of the immediacy of the pictorial gesture, the stone refers to a remote, sedimented and natural temporality. The title, "Urban Fossil", is particularly eloquent: it alludes to the overlapping of times, between the ancestral and the modern, between natural matter and artistic intervention. The piece thus combines the memory of the earth with an urban and abstract sensibility, typical of Canogar's mature production. Rafael Canogar, a founding member of the El Paso group in 1957, was a key figure in the renewal of post-war Spanish art. After his early informalist stages, his work evolved towards new forms of figuration, material experimentation and gestural abstraction. His production is represented in important collections and museums, including the Museo Reina Sofía, the IVAM, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español de Cuenca and the Museo Patio Herreriano, among others.

Work referenced in the artist's online catalog (no. 2022-01). Measurements: 32,5 x 19 x 16 cm. Sculpture belonging to a limited edition of 60 copies, made by Rafael Canogar, a key figure of contemporary Spanish art. The work is part of his sculptural production of geometric and refined language, where the artist explores the tensions between plane, volume and space through the articulation of elementary forms. The composition, of a markedly constructive character, is organized around the intersection of metallic planes that generate a dynamic play of light and shadow, reinforced by the blued finish. This treatment gives the piece a sober and emphatic presence, in line with Canogar's evolution towards an abstraction with structural roots. Canogar was co-founder of the group "El Paso", and during the fifties he developed a fully informalist work, which derived during the sixties in a complex figuration. During his mature stage, from 1975 onwards, Canogar invented a new iconography, his own and personal, which he expresses through the mask, the head, the face, as a representation of the man who loses his individuality and becomes a plastic sign, as can be seen in the work we now present. His awards include the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1982), he is a member of the San Fernando Academy, and is represented in the most important modern art collections around the world, such as the Reina Sofia Museum, the MOMA in New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico, and the Chicago Art Institute, among many others.
