      (1829 Wien - 1885 ebenda) "Allegorische Skizze" mit weiblichem Akt Mit schnellem Duktus gemalte, um 1870-1880 entstandene Studie, wohl als Entwurf für ein großes Ölgemälde, Wand- oder Deckenbild. Der temperamentvolle Künstler studierte seit 1845 an der Wiener Akademie bei Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller und Carl Rahl. Erstes Aufsehen erregte Canon seit 1857 auf Ausstellungen, er orientierte sich wie viele Maler seiner Generation an Peter Paul Rubens und Tizian. 1860-1869 lebte Canon in Karlsruhe und 1869-1874 in Stuttgart, bevor er 1874 nach Wien zurückkehrte. Bereits in Karlsruhe schuf er teilw. beeindruckend monumentale Gemälde und Wandbilder für öffentliche Gebäude. In der Metropole der k. u. k. Monarchie wurde Canon neben seinem Zeitgenossen Hans Makart vollends zu einem der gefragtesten und bedeutendsten Künstler der Ringstraßenzeit. Öl/Papier, alt auf Karton kaschiert. Verso auf altem Klebezettelt bez. u. betitelt "Allegorische Skizze gem. von Canon". Ca. 46,5 cm x 29 cm. Rahmen. Oil on paper, laid down on cardboard. Inscribed and titled on an old label on the reverse.

      Oil on canvas. Young woman reaching toward a basket with turnips, her head facing toward the spectator in three-quarter profile. The folds of her dress reveal a muscular body and glistening skin. In front of her a creative arrangement of fish, game, and vegetables. Signed on the lower right "Canon". In wooden moulding frame. On the back of the stretcher a note confirming the authenticity and series. Dimensions 111 x 169 cm, framed 132 x 186 cm. Hans Canon (1829/30-1885 Vienna), famous Historicist painter, before concluding his studies at the art academy he was an officer in the Austrian army. Canon painted especially in the Baroque style, Rubens and Titian were his most important role models. The kitchen scene was exhibited and praised profusely at the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung as a positive example of national socialist art. Condition: II +

Mit vereinzelten Retuschen und feinen Krakelüren. „Das Brustbild zeigt einen alten Mann in Lodenhut und einem abgetragenen Mantel. Seine Instrumente und die Kriegsteilnehmermedaille am Revers kennzeichnen die abenteuerliche Erscheinung eines ehemaligen, verarmten Soldaten. Die Wirkung des realistisch gemalten Bildes beruht auf seiner nuancierten Farbgebung; Die grau-weissen Haare, das vielfarbige Inkarnat, das Zerschlissene seines Graublau changierenden Mantels, der nur noch an einer Stelle grüne Hut und der warme Braunton der Geige tragen die sentimentale Stimmung des Bildes.“ (a.o.O.).
